Do you Find it Difficult playing without a drummer?

I've played drumerless a few times. My advice: Dial in a fatter tone than usual , keep it simple and count at all times. Patting the strings on upbeats and where a snare would be can help, but don't overdo it. Don't slap.

    Action too high.

I have that bridge on a yamaha rbx-270j. The plate is a bit thicker than stock, but the height difference comes mainly from the barrel which has about 2mm more in diameter(~1 cm total diameter), than the previous one . The barrel width is the same though(19mm) , so you could swap in a normal...

wait until after the chord changes to play?

Your singer needs to learn the form of the song. If it's a mistake you should try to cover it, in a live situation, but remember that a late transition still has to be on the beat. Now if it's not a mistake and/or it happens regularly then you should confront your singer and tell him to either...

New Acoustic Bass guitar the Shortbass One! Small, LOUD!

Well, if the mic is with the camera, then the ukeleles are mostly pointed away, while the bass has its soundhole pointed towards it (more or less). Depending on the mic type, this could make a world of difference. There is also this clip: where there is a comparison to an ABG, and the...

    Songs to learn pick with.

Prelude in G major from Bach's cello suites. I used it when I recently got an ABG and wanted to play it with a pick and it was enough on it's own to get me to a decent level of pick playing.

Boiling your Bass Strings: bringing it back for 2013

I've boiled countless sets through the years and normally I'd say boil them, but if you have an audition in 3 days and this is the only set you have, it's better that you find some money (borrow form a friend maybe?) and buy new ones. The reason is that 3 days before a gig is a bad time for...

Open string, or fretted 5th which do you prefer?

Most of the time I don't think about it at all and play whatever requires less motion. As complexity of a song goes up though, my preference starts gravitating towards fretted notes. That's mostly because it seems that open string notes interfere with my memorization process.

Nice, but at that money you can probably get a Jamman Solo at ebay. Also, lol at the video: "We've taken away all the unecessary features... drum machines , Sd card slots,..." And keeps on going about how they removed , stripped , etc. Yeah ,they first built a super pedal and then strip it...

    Egotistical Guitarists Anyone?

Sometimes guitarists don't know what they hear. I've had a few experiences where there was too much bass overall, but it wasn't coming from me (alone). Heavily overdriven guitars produce subharmonics that add boominess to the sound and equalizers with boosted lows make it even worse. So if a...

    Neccesity of strap locks?

Out of topic, but : Same guy that steals picks, probably? A ten year old leather strap, shortened to my preference, that had only sentimental value and some "decorative stitches" on it... I forgot it on a university studio. It's the most frequented studio in town, but there is supposedly...

    Neccesity of strap locks?

I used to have them for many years on my primary bass. I stopped using them about 9-10 months ago, after the strap that had them on was stolen. Pros: They provide a sense of security and freedom of motion. I've never had a bass fall to the ground without them, but I've caught it mid-air...

More like 20€ around here. And, really, why do you feel like insulting people that are on a completely different financial situation than you, by telling them what they should or shouldn't do ? Boiling your Bass Strings: bringing it back for 2013

I do my rotos all the time. It gets a bit messy and you have to manually clean the strings from a few stray silk threads that will get caught on them while boiling. Also while baking it gets darker from being burned a little bit. If you don't mind the aesthetics of it, as well as the 5 more...

Remove the strings from the bass. Wrap them, like they were when you bought them. Boil them for 15 minutes, adding a little bit of vinegar in the water. Warm the oven (NOT a microwave) at 100° C for 5-10 minutes (preferably while boiling). Take a piece of tin foil and pierce it all over...

    Why do you gig?

Ok ,you are right . That sentence came out wrong and I'm retracting it. Thanks for clarifying that to me. :hiding: Anyway, what I probably should have written is : I try to gig as much as I can ( I don't have a gig right now either), because I see that as the most fulfilling and fun...

    Why do you gig?

badly phrased ? Yes. I mean, composers and recording artists are obviously musicians, too, but anyone that is meaningfully considered a musician does something that has a target other than themselves. That's the nature of expression. It needs to be directed somewhere. elitism? :eyebrow...

    Why do you gig?

I think you've got it backwards. Art is expression. A language if you may. What good is talking, if none ever hears you? If you only jam with a few friends, just to appreciate your musical skills, then you have become a prime example of elitism. On the other hand, if you understand that...

What do you do with your old strings?

Those that I like (roto's swingbass 66, d'addario pro-steels): Boil - bake - reuse . Those that I am not too fond of (nickels, flats, coated) : I keep them around if someone else wants them, or in case I feel like trying their type again. I've also used a couple of them to freshen up...

How many of us 'really' listen to Jaco?

Funny thing, I listen to Jaco, for the music not the chops. Stuff like Havona, Elegant People, Reza and many others send my mind on a musical trip , which I really can't describe. There's a number of bass players that I listen to because of their technique but I really love Jaco's music. I...

    Make my playing less noisey????

Do you notice this when practising, or have you noticed it on gigs, too? When playing in a low volume, like in the room, you may hear the sound coming directly from the fretboard. Anyway, you shouldn't change the action, unless : a) It can be heard through the amp (I'd suggest that you...

I just had a sad realization about technique on bass

Sorry, but I think you are drowning in a teaspoon of water here. Most of what you mention aren't techniques on their own, but parts of the intstrument's overall technique. E.g. raking, alternating, one finger per fret are things you pick up on as you learn the instrument. And the various...

Relatively new player - need help

Using more than one fingers is very useful when string crossing is involved, but I think you should also try to learn to properly alternate them. It will do wonders for your stamina, speed and fluidity of playing. On your question, when playing a pattern that goes back and forth on adjacent...

Relatively new player - need help

Mute with your fretting hand. Place a finger flat on the fretboard so that it covers both the notes you want to play (i.e. the 7th fret on both the E and the A string) and then apply pressure only to the one you want to play. Then "roll" the pressure to the other one and keep repeating until...

    Playing without a drummer

I've been in that situation a couple of times. The result wasn't great, mainly due to the repertoire being too much on the rock side and not having been sufficiently modified to fit the context. Still it worked well enough to get us some paying gigs. My advise is: 1) Don't try to...

    Johnson

Ok, I might have been quick on calling this wood a fake one. This discussion got to me to dig up the body and check it again. The neck pocket does indeed have the appearance of a fake wood, but I got a second opinion by someone who knows a bit more about wood (still non-expert though) and...

No offence, but not worth it's money no matter how little. I had a fretless jazz (jj-800?), probably same base model to yours, only in SB. The body isn't real wood, it is pressed sawdust and glue. On top of that, the pickups are pretty low in output, with a muddy tone (although they are...

    (Once again) Dear Lefties...

Wow, Starfire still in the market? My first bass was one (11 years ago) and despite the emotional weight of it, I can say it was complete crap. Bad frets, dull sound, neck heavy (though mine was a p/j with a tiny body. A MM copy is not likely to have this problem). That bass now lies...

Tuning down half a step - what's the point?

Guitarists wanting a lower tension does seem like a reason for this, though that's what lighter strings are for. No reason for people nowadays to use tricks that were opted for, when finding proper strings wasn't that easy (don't look at my sig :D). As for the singer having an easier...

If you want to compose bass lines, then you probably want to understand how the bass has functioned throughout musical styles and genres. Based on what you ask, I'd recommend Bass Grooves by Ed Friedland. It has many cool basslines, in various genres (a couple of them too obscure for me, but...
