Double Bass New strings A string Rattle

Funny this should come up now. I changed my Super Silvers for new ones about two years ago and immediately got a buzz (I thought of it more as a rattle) on the A string. I shimmed the string under the nut, I rewound it... nothing helped. If I plucked perfectly sideways I could avoid the rattle...

Double Bass Run acoustic bass through computer

I'm going down the same general road. It's a bit late in the COVID game but some of us are using Acapella to jam remotely, and I've been looking at options for getting the DB into the mix. Earpods don't cut it; the mic is too far from the sound. Basic choices are: - regular headphones for the...

    Headphone amps...whats out there today?

Looking around, it seems that "headphone amp" can include some very high end stuff that has nothing to do with individual instruments. Crutchfield (near me) has them from $300 to $3000. Searching instead for "guitar headphone amp" is a bit better. I'm definitely looking for something in the $50...

    Headphone amps...whats out there today?

Yes, I'm understating my wants... having the ability to listen to a song and play along is on the list. I'll see how far I get with what I have, but I suspect I will buy a small mix-type amp.

Double Bass Tablets or other tech for practice

I think it CAN be a crutch. I've seen that in my own usage. It's up to each of us to use any of the aids (charts, etc) responsibly if we want to improve rather than just reproduce sound. But... While I do appreciate the "stop staring at song sheets" gist of that post, I don't see that much of...

    Headphone amps...whats out there today?

I want to connect headphones to a BG for practice. I have a ZOOM H2N and a HPF-Pre. I don't really care about the sound quality. Can I do the job with one or both of these? I don't have the headphones or BG yet (well, I have earphones but I want to use full headphones).

Thanks. I bounced that idea off Francis and ended up changing to the regular 2.

Double Bass Looking for volume control and going down the preamp rabbit hole

The two Fishman units were what I had looked at before I posted this thread. They are nice looking units and seem well made. Still, the Stage is considerably bigger than the fDeck units: Stage: 5.6 x 3.3 x 1.2 HPF 2M: 4.4 x 2.3 x 1.1 or slightly smaller, to the best of my knowledge. That's the...

Double Bass App that detects tempo?

Just a follow-up here to confirm that LiveBPM is indeed a great app. I've been using it at jam some weeks, and it's great to see how our group speeds up and slows down depending on who is taking a break or whatever.

Double Bass Looking for volume control and going down the preamp rabbit hole

Also, how about a couple of pics of it mounted by the tailpiece, for those who have done that? The HPF-Pre seems to have two 1/4" jacks, and my Realist pickup also has a 1/4" jack. Should I change the Realist over to having a plug? Or use a super-short cable?

You guys are convincing. I think I will get one of the version 2s. Can anyone give me exact dimensions? The plastic and metal cases seem to be different.

Double Bass Looking for volume control and going down the preamp rabbit hole

I have a '83 Engelhardt with a Realist pickup. I rarely gig, and mostly play at our weekly jam but I am amplifying more and more these days. At gigs I'm plugged into a PA but for small stuff I plug into a cheap Crate amp. I leave the amp in the back of the room and it's not easy to adjust the...

Double Bass App that detects tempo?

Thank you... your Google-Fu was definitely stronger than mine with the use of "analyzer." I got LiveBPM (for IOS) and it looks great. Records a graph of tempo for a song, etc. Will use it in practice later this week.

Double Bass App that detects tempo?

Kind of self explanatory but I'd like to find an app that averages tempo over several seconds and displays it. There's one that does it with screen taps but I want one that just listens for volume spikes. It would be interesting to see when we speed up or slow down during songs. Anyone know of...

Double Bass Why play 5 above ?

5 year beginner here. The E string on my bass is strong enough and I usually play G there, but I go to the "high G" more for the higher sound than anything else. Sometimes if the song is going lower it's a good counter to go higher on the bass. Sometimes not. And if a section ends on G D G I'll...

Double Bass Innovation strings for bluegrass

Fretwell put Super Silvers on my bass years ago and I like them a lot. Very easy on the fingers. I went back for a tune-up last fall and Jerry thought the strings were still in fine shape and didn't need changing (although they are getting a bit green). Now, I don't have a lot of experience...

    iOS App for Bass

How's the app coming along? I'm looking for a super basic tap-in metronome app. It should average several taps to figure out the tempo, which seems obvious but some well known ones don't do that. I'm hoping you incorporate this into your app.

Double Bass Highly portable PA system for quartet/quintet?

That sounds exactly like what we use and I am trying to avoid. I'm asking about highly portable systems here. Carry it out with your other hand and play. Take a look at some of the links to see the sorts of systems I'm referring to. Yeah, I have no idea where that number came from and it...

Double Bass Highly portable PA system for quartet/quintet?

Thanks for the pointers. Although I mentioned that I'm the only one using a pickup, we do need a few mic inputs for the other players. Preferably at least one instrument mic and a vocal mic. Most of the solutions provide that. To recap: Bose L1 system: $1000~3000, 500W? Basic unit is two...

Double Bass Highly portable PA system for quartet/quintet?

We had a gig yesterday that we didn't have the right equipment for. For the best results we would have had to get into the center of a skating arena and pretty much start to play immediately, audible to everyone even with the HVAC and floor fans running. The sound system we normally use takes...

    Double Bass Innovation Super Silvers?

I recently installed Super Silvers after having some unknown (to me) arco strings on the bass for over a year. The steel arco strings were giving me blisters very quickly if I wasn't careful after not playing for a while. The SS are like butter! Probably not as soft to the hand as Silver Slaps...

    Double Bass Restringing Question

Thanks! I pushed the G over there to clear the D. It's not rubbing the cheek. Still, I don't like the D running across the hole in the G post. The hole positions just aren't that great.

    Double Bass Restringing Question

I read in a different thread about the common problem of the D string rubbing on the G in the pegbox. I am finding it hard to avoid this due to where the holes are in the tuners (I've seen pix of other tuners with holes positioned so that it's less of a problem). Looking at the pegbox, it...

Double Bass Hey folks, questions about a Bluegrass jam.

Just go. You'll learn a lot. As mentioned: - there is no drummer (where did that idea come from anyway?) - For old-time at least, most songs are in D, some in A and some in G - watch a good guitarist if you can't hear the chord. - most tunes only need 1/4/5. This web page (and my commenting...

    Double Bass DADA tuning?

I watched that YouTube video where the guy is playing arco with what he calls "old-time DADA." For pizz, is there any reason to do this? I can see it for a drone string when bowing, but when I'm playing OT I think the existing open D and A are all I need. I guess the question is based on...

Double Bass Total pull at tail piece?

Well, you seem to agree with me that understanding them is key to helping Joey understand the issue.
  34. AntonLargiader

Double Bass Total pull at tail piece?

I hope no one is advocating that; it would be a terrible design decision. One consequence would be that when Joe Bass Player accidentally cranks his D string when he's trying to raise his E string, he'll break the tailgut. Bad design. You have to design for certain expected but abnormal...

Double Bass Total pull at tail piece?

This stuff is common knowledge. Any sailor knows it. Tell me, though, when you pull on that 10:1 block & tackle I described, how many pounds of tension do you think you are putting in the rope that you are pulling?
  36. AntonLargiader

Double Bass Total pull at tail piece?

That's just self-contradictory. The reduced force is applied to the rope, ergo the rope has less force applied to it. That means less tension. It's that simple. If you, as a 160 pound person, use a 10:1 block & tackle to lift a 1500 pound object using 150 pounds of your weight (we'll leave...
  37. AntonLargiader

Double Bass Total pull at tail piece?

Joey, if I understand your premise properly, you need to read about block & tackle systems. If the wire goes from the tailpiece around the endpin and back to the tailpiece, its tension is half the combined string tension. The tailpiece is in equilibrium, the total forces on it are equal...

Double Bass Bought one of these bridges, had to send it back!

In question, exactly. That's basically the point. The seller indicates that it wasn't the right auction (he sells bridges thinned and not thinned). I don't have any facts, so I'm not going to automatically side with anyone.
  39. AntonLargiader

Double Bass Bought one of these bridges, had to send it back!

Why is everyone blindly taking the OP's word about what he ordered and what he received? If the store sells both kinds, and the store indicates that the OP ordered an uncut bridge, how is the store automatically the bad guy? At the worst, it's he-said she-said. We don't have actual information...

    Double Bass PLEK for bass?

I think the PLEK system goes a bit beyond that. To me, the precision comes from knowing the FB profile with AND without string tension, and basing the adjustments on that and the desired string height (which isn't the same for everyone). So it's more about measuring than it is about machining...
