how to tell my guitarists to learn theory and stop overplayin without insulting them.

There's a TV commercial where a Buddhist Monk is trying to get a point across to a student. The older dude poors a cup of tea for the student and keeps pooring to where it is overflowing much to the dismay of the student. The lesson being....in order to learn and retain, you first need an empty...

^^^^ I know what to do....get an education. Your command of the english language is terrible. If english is your second language I apologize, but that was a tough read.

Our guitarist is messed up. What to do?

I congratulate you for dealing with it in this manner. It's good to see fellow musicians helping each other out.

    Band implosion...My fault?

The last couple weeks he has seemed especially irritable. I wondered about thge stage fright, especially since he is trying to play w/o that other guitar, which he has never done. Sheesh... i thought I would be the nervous one. He has always come off as "cock sure" of everything. Maybe not so much.

    Band implosion...My fault?

Aaaaammmeeeennnn! That is exactly what I thought. The set was solid, the only thing I'd say is that guitard thought he was so good he could pull this thing off without a rhythm guitarist, and quite frankly it was too much for him. Of course when I suggested that a certain song would be hard to...

    Band implosion...My fault?

Bottom line: I am a skilled musician, but I do lack gigging experience. When I was playing guitar I took classical guitar lessons at James Madison University just to expand myself as a guitarist. Of course, guitard just made condescending remarks about it, cuz he learned by ear. Has anyone...

HA HA It would have felt pretty good I believe :hyper:

    Band implosion...My fault?

True...it's not cut and dry...and it tells me that I wasn't crazy when I asked to bring some friends after I saw the guitarist and singer do it. And all I wanted was some consideration. Next time I'll ask the right things before hand.

    Band implosion...My fault?

FYI it was exactly a 50/50 split on posters that actually commented on whether or not you should bring people to rehearsal.

    Band implosion...My fault?

I appreciate everyones input. I'm movin on and I learned a whole lot. I've been contacted by a couple that is playing a wedding party in a month and I put a craigslist ad in and I got 1 response from a drummer already. I know I have something to offer musically, so thats the way I'm gonna sell...

    Band implosion...My fault?

No, this guy is not the LT of guitar players...LOL He thought he was. Dude, we weren't cutting an album, we weren't preparing for a world tour. We had a gig lined up at a campground. You'll have to take my word for it....we were tight, and a couple people at rehearsal had nothing to do with it...

    Band implosion...My fault?

Well, that's a good question. Truthfully, I do regret it, but I just decided enough was enough. As far as rights, I really felt like I had none. And whether or not my request was trivial is very subjective. If being treated like everyone else is trivial, then I had no business in this band. And...

    Band implosion...My fault?

    1. Definitely should have had contact numbers for the other guys. 2. Yep, I asked a simple question and got an answer with no explanation. 3. I definitely had some constructive ideas. Every one was shotdown. 4. the singer definitely was taking all his direction from guitarist. Singer is a...

    Band implosion...My fault?

I've played guitar since I was 13, bass off and on but only got serious when they asked me to join band as a bassist. So I've had some learning to do. I made the corrections when they pointed them out, but never did they say I wasn't cutting it. In fact we had some rehearsal where, especially...

    Band implosion...My fault?

Well i have no doubt it's childish, I'm sure I fell into that trap. But I guess I'd had enough and stooped to his level. The drummer told me the guitarist is like a 50 year old child.

    Band implosion...My fault?

Yeah, I wondered about that too. Seems like people that are afraid to speak their mind might go about it like that. If that's true they had plenty of time to tell me in a decent manner. It would have hurt but I'd have been on my way and lookin to improve on it with another band. The "new guy"...

    Band implosion...My fault?

Thanks everyone for the support. Just a thought, maybe we need a thread asking, " what is the stupidest reason you've heard or seen for busting up a band?"

I did ask him, read the thread. Thanks for the contribution!

    Band implosion...My fault?

I respect that opinion, and I won't make that mistake again. I'll make sure what the rules are beforehand, I just didn't think it was a big deal, but you're right I didn't consider it to be a distraction for the other guys. Probably because they've done it as well. Live and learn I guess.
  25. T

    Band implosion...My fault?

I even asked was it due to the way I play. The drummer said I was coming along well and we were groovin. The non musician singer said I was still missing some parts, but after asking him to explain himself it was obvious it came from the guitarist. Still alot of BS. Man, if that was the case and...

    Band implosion...My fault?

@Liam...Ok so I respect that opinion, and wish I'd been told. I guess thats why I said something about it beforehand. An explanation would have resolved it, but breaking up the band? I just don't see it.

    Band implosion...My fault?

@ dmusic...so the rules are different if you're the new guy?
  28. T

    Band implosion...My fault?

Is there some kind of unwritten rule that says nobody comes to rehearsal if your 2 weeks away from gig. Had I known:hmm: I just wonder if the guitarist was having some issues about playing the gig and just used this as an excuse to cancel. The dudes ego is huge.
  29. T

    Band implosion...My fault?

@ 4string...well this is all new to me. Not the music part but the gigging part. Maybe we were in lockdown mode, but I swear it wasn't a distraction. I guess maybe next time I'll take that into consideration. Still seems like total overreaction to me.

    Band implosion...My fault?

@ Matticus... After finding out that the guitarist canceled everything, I called him to explain, he said because he wasn't gonna put up with someone telling hhim it was Bull****. I even asked about the other people that show up, he said we only have 2 weeks to the gig and we need to practice. So...

    Band implosion...My fault?

Out of common courtesy, I told our guitarist I would be bringing 2 old musician friends to practice. I asked on monday, got my answer on Friday. Which was "no". We should do it after the gig on the 19th. Mind you, the singer and the guitarist have done the same thing, so I didn't think it was a...

New Drummer Not on The Same Page Rant

Bottom line: In rehearsal, songs are meant to be played in pieces, stopped, started and even stopped again. Comments like "could you turn up?" or "what part are you playing there? I need to see if mine works with it..." or "Is what you are playing right in the chorus?" - these are all benign...

I'm really beginning to dislike my guitarist...

Is it just me, or does it sound like he has a bassist lined up already? Maybe he's ready to part ways right now, after 2 years. It's an uncomfortable situation to be in. Do you really need to be working with him? :eyebrow:

lead singer is addicted to karaoke...

At Karaoke he gets the appreciation from the crowd...applause, comments, people asking him for a duet, whatever. At band practice he sings to the walls. Do you gig much, how is he at the gigs?

I want your thoughts on how to handle a lyrical situation!

I'd like to hear some of the lyrics that you feel are over the top. Like other posters have said, there are many bands that have lyrics that are spiritual but the bands themselves are mainstream.
