I'm really beginning to dislike my guitarist...

**arg, there be rants ahead!**

I'm really beginning to dislike my guitarist. We had a gig this past weekend for St. Patty's Day. Normally we don't start playing on a gig until 11pm or so, and I figured the same would go for this gig.

Well 8pm rolls around the night of the gig and I started to make a quick dinner before the gig. At 8:10 my guitarist's roommate, a mutual friend of ours, gave me a call to ask what the plan was for that night. My guitarist overheard us talking and yelled over the phone that we had to be at the bar by 9pm (less than 50 minutes at that point) and setup so we could start playing at 10.

I told him I'd do my best, but since he didn't tell me we had to get there so early I might be a few minutes late as dinner was on the stove, I had to eat, and then I had to clean up. I asked him if he could help me out and throw my gear in his car since it was at his place, but he said no way :eyebrow: Anyways, I hurried up with dinner as fast as I could, went to his place to grab my gear, and then made it out to the bar by 9:15.

I get there and he instantly starts making wise cracks at me being late, but I held my tongue and got setup and was ready to play by 9:30 (30 minutes before we were suppose to start). Well 10pm rolls around and we don't start. 10:30 rolls around and again we don't start. We didn't end up starting until 10:55 despite my guitarist telling me how urgent it was for us to get there by 9 so that we could start by 10!

We did the gig and it went down well enough, but afterwards he came up to me to discuss 'professionalism' and how me showing up late somehow put his name on the line as he booked the gig  I was like ***. First of all, he didn't tell me we had to get there so early until 45 minutes before the gig. Second, despite me being a few minutes late I was still setup and ready to go before 10. And third, we didn't even start when we were supposed to - how is that my fault?!

He then went into detail about how he doesn't want to play with a bassist who is unreliable :rollno: I quickly reminded him that he didn't let me know until 50 minutes of the gig that we had to get there so early, that he didn't grab my gear to speed up the process like he could of, and that we still didn't start on time despite me being there and being ready to go. All of this he shrugged off. He wouldn't even take any responsibility for his carelessness to inform me of the time changes :spit:

The irony to this story is that we had rehearsal twice that week before the gig. Both times I showed up to rehearsal early, both times rehearsal got pushed back 45 minutes to an hour, both times he neglected to tell me this change until after I had already arrived, and both times he said he texted or called me beforehand to tell me - he never did :scowl: I'm beginning to think the guy is going nuts.

IMO, you made the mistake of letting him even pretend that you were at fault.

I would have agreed100% with the "professionalism" rant. Then I would say, "YOU failed to inform me of the details of this gig. Despite your first professional failure, I was here 45 minutes early. I was ready to play at 930 like a pro, but our show didn't start until 1055 - do you have ANY idea what the gig details actually were? Despite this second professional failure, I played the show and did a good job. Now we're on to your third professional failure - you will apologize for how you are treating me or find another bassist, because three acts of unprofessional behavior in one night is waaaaaaaay over the limit for anybody in my band. I do not have the time or patience for this childish, amateur foolishness."

And if he doesn't like that, quit and consider yourself saved from being in a band with a jerk. Odds are you will get a call later in the week saying that the guitar player is gone and will you please come back?

I really tried not to. I told him that he needed to accept responsibility for his negligence and to apologize to me, but he didn't. Actually, he texted my later that night after the gig and told me that he has "a bassist lined up that doesn't **** around on bar gigs when his (my guitarist's) name is on the line, and that I can't just show up to a gig whenever I feel like it." I told him he was acting like a spoiled brat.

Do or do not. There is no try.

And I agree with above - I would have quit this band yesterday.

At this point, if you stay with the band, you get what you deserve. You know how he acts. You do not stand up for yourself adequately. You know the problem will continue. If you're still in this band tomorrow, it's your fault. Just my opinion.

Wow, thats not someone I would work with for one second longer.

Unfortunately, we're in two groups together. One is my money making cover group (which is a trio), and the other is an original group (which is a 5 piece) (this gig was the trio - we also had a sub drummer on the gig so our normal drummer wasn't there to see how ridiculous he was acting). I'm trying to figure out what would be the best course of action to take on this because I've reached my wits end of dealing with this kind of crap as it's been going on (off and on) for two years.

I agree. You did well by not taking on what he was clearly trying to dump on you. Still, you can't make someone understand that they're being unfair if they simply refuse to understand it. I'd seriously think about quitting. Especially if you live in or near a well populated area. There's bound to be other projects with less onerous personalities. I shopped around for six months, jammed with a lot of people, joined and quit a band, all in the search of the perfect place for me. I found it, too. Persistence pays off--and so does an unwillingness to settle.

Is it just me, or does it sound like he has a bassist lined up already? Maybe he's ready to part ways right now, after 2 years. It's an uncomfortable situation to be in. Do you really need to be working with him? :eyebrow:

this once happened in a previous band of mine with the Drummer, essentially what was going on was that he was angling to oust me from the band.

if you are in an area where there are likely to be options, put it to both bands that it is you or him (if you quit one of them, the abuse will just shift to the other)

Tell him to have fun with the new bassist. You shoulda told him for the gig in question. F that noise.

I was in a band with a drummer that used to chuck drumsticks at the other players if there were little flubs in the set. Didn't like it much when I saw him do it and went ahead and kicked his cymbal stand straight into his lap on the express route.

Life is too short to be in a musical situation with dickheads. It's supposed to be enjoyable. It isn't enjoyable, it isn't for me.

edit: wow Kraken, did we play with the same guy?

If we were playing at eleven, I would've expected you there by seven.

Ten?

Six.

And all of that would've been set in stone before the day of the show.

Dinner?

Eat dinner AFTER sound check.

How do you guys load in, set up, tweak the EQ for the mains AND the monitors, and have everything done in an hour or less?

Wow, thats not someone I would work with for one second longer.

Right?!:p

An ego that big that can't admit when someone else isn't at fault is not someone to play with. I've met that person many times and they never get better. Only worse. And then nobody wants to play with them and all they do is complain about how all the musicians in town are prima donna rock star wannabes who need a clue. And the only person that hears this is their mother who can hear this musician ranting from his basement bedroom as he yells this at the newspaper which he is reading to look for work because his last job fired him for the same reasons no other musicians will play with him.:hiding:
