HELP! Need fender bass 'basics' on parts/models!

Trading the bass in on another color gets me...another used bass and I'm guessing will run me $150-200. (if they gimme 100-150 for mine and I get a 'better' one for 300). I know this one is sound at least. straight neck, holds tune, etc. Elec and new pickguard is $40ish. Tuners worst case...

HELP! Need fender bass 'basics' on parts/models!

Picked up a 94 fender j-bass, standard MIM, one piece pick guard. Got it cheap ($50) and it works...but it's spent time in a dungeon (i mean, basement) I"m guessing from the surface rust on the pickups, bridge, wire 'director' screw on the head. It has a rattling tuner, and the pots were a...

Need some educ on Fender MIM basses

we have an ibanez gsr200 bass with flats on it - he doesn't like the flats. Have a dean jeff berlin and he loves that - plays it very well. I' considered putting other strings on the ibby but it may be the next/pickups on the dean he likes- nice low action on it. He likes to slap and I...

Need some educ on Fender MIM basses

My wife has a customer that got a Fender MIM jazz bass '20 years ago' and says 'needs work as it's not been played in a long time'. He says he successfully removed 'all the crazy stickers I put on as a teen'. The price is $50...hard to pass that up. It's more for my son now that he's...

Do you take your valuable basses to gigs?

I get paid to take pictures and I view my results as art. My camera, lights, lenses, computer are tools that allow my to express my art. So in that regard yes, a bass or amp is a tool. And I try to use the right tool for the job. If the job doesn't require a $7000 camera then why use one...

Do you take your valuable basses to gigs?

get insurance (and ask questions about coverage). At least the financial issues are covered. Wear and tear potential is up the more it's moved, used, etc. But you got it to play...right? Emotional value if it should get stolen can't be replaced, so if it's got sentimental value be cautious...

    Does price = quality/sound

Could be true - I've not tried everything out there and may not be enough of a 'coneissur' (sp?) to tell the difference. I know with camera lenses there is a huge difference between a canon 50 1.2 and 1.4 and 1.8. Besides the price - 1500 vs 500 vs 80. Under ideal conditions (sunny day in the...

    Does price = quality/sound

WHAT? That implies newer is better...or at least more robust. Or maybe bigger bolts are of an inferior grade metal.. But unless bolts broke can't say that has much to do with build quality. I have a chinese dean bass that is flawless - finish, fret edges/level, etc. I can say on all the...

    Does price = quality/sound

OK, what is 'better build quality'? That implies less expensive instruments come with loose screws or something. I've had this discussion with fellow photographers regarding consumer lenses ($400ish) compared to pro lenses ($1500+). Better materials? Yes, for the most part. Better 'build'...

Bar band Gigs are too long

GO work a cruise ship. I hear the money is decent - free room/board and not much to spend it on. But you play 8 hour a day 6 days a week. and have to commit to a cruise or longer - unless you want to swim home! But you learn a lot - pay your dues, etc. All depends on your goal or aim in...

Bar band Gigs are too long

Here (western pa) most bars pay $300 or so for 9-2am, give or take 1/2 hour. If you can deliver an audience you can get paid more. And that gets split among the members, less any gear rental (pa, etc). So add load, travel time, unload and setup/tear down - so 7-8 hours all told for $100ish. So...

    Rocksmith/Bandfuse...

Newer to bass and my daughter is newer to guitar. Got RS2014 and PS3 for christmas. Played songs together and I've worked thru some of the lessons for bass. Interesting. For the cost (amazon w/ discount, game and 2 cords was $40 delivered) it's well worth it. Have audio run into a surround...

    Does price = quality/sound

go to teh store. The LARGER packages cost MORE per ounce. You can buy 2 smaller cans of tuna, get MORE tuna and pay LESS than buying the larger size. So even in your example its dumb to buy the larger can of tuna. As for the car - the 'common sense' around is toyotas are better than GM...

Does what you play make you better?

When you see someone playing an instrument - guitar, bass, whatever - does WHAT they play influence your OPINION of their playing? (positive or negative?) Let me clarify.. Does the INSTRUMENT they're playing influence your opinion of them? A lakland vs fender, vintage vs new fender, high end...

    Does price = quality/sound

But the REAL question is not 'does more money get me a better instrument' (which it will in some or many ways). But Is it WORTH the extra it costs? And you nailed it - it depends on the player. I am new to playing..there's no way a Rik or Lakland would make me sound better, play better...

    Does price = quality/sound

I think people are stupid - as a group. and they are fooled every day. a simple example YOU can check out today if you want. Go to ANY grocery store and go look at canned tuna. Cans come in different sizes. You KNOW that bigger is cheaper, per ounce, right? Uh huh...do the math on tuna...

    Does price = quality/sound

Yes...and no. You buy a $1000 bass new. You go to sell it and get what? $800, 850? You lost $150-200. Buy a $200 bass and go sell it and get $100. You lost $100. You lost more money on the 'better' instrument. And the more expensive the more you lose. Perhaps less in percentage, but more...

    Literally no lead singers around?

supply and demand...place an add "need lead singer. paying $1000 a night" and you'll have a line at the door. Just sayin'... My guitar teacher says if you can sing (and play anything) you can easily get work in a band, vs just playing, no matter how good. His trio has him singing most lead...

    Does price = quality/sound

What is the higher price getting you? Better design? That's worth paying for. Better 'parts' - strings, bridge, pickup, tuners, etc? Yes. Most of these can be added to any bass though. Different wood or finishes, more 'time' on finishing the instrument. Does this relate to better playing...

    Income inequality "solutions"

It wont' matter. It's very darwinian - survival of the fittest so to speak. Some people (and animals) lead and other follow. Some will do whatever it takes to succeed and others do as little as they can to survive. Can everyone be jimi hendrix or victor wooten? Or even close? Why not? If...

Beginner Using Flatwound Strings - Pros & Cons

Beginner Using Flatwound Strings - Pros & Cons

I put fender flats (medium) on my ibby 200. At first I loved them - smooth and nice sound. The more I played the more 'stiff' if felt they were - my pinky and ring fingers had issues pushing hard enough for clean sounds. I traded my yamaha rbx375 with rotosound 66 med on it for a dean jeff...

Last january my son and I went acoustic guitar shopping.. He had an old old handme down folk size..it wasn't good when it was new let along 50 years later. So we tried a number of different guitars looking for playability and sound. No measuring devices, just our ears. We're not 'experts' -...

    "Wood and tone" experiment

You're right of course. But I can change strings - $25ish and 10 minutes. I can change pickups...a bit more time and money but not difficult. Changing the wood...not possible. need a new guitar for that. But which is best? Is alder better or some misc random 'tone wood' from the jungle...

    Short scale vs long scale

comfort. I've not played a short scale but once in a store so can't comment on how much diff it makes, but easy action, lighter bass, thinner strings are good things IMO. As others have said you can change pickups, eq adjustments, string choice, how you play, amp and pedals/effects can be added.

I think Fender is seriously crazy!

I'm reading a book on the histroy of elec bass guitars and when the P bass first came out it was $220 - about $1500 in todays money. And you can still buy 'that' bass for 'that' money today. We're just spoiled that you can buy a MIM for 1/3 and other playable basses for half that, and used...

go to ghetto groceries and you're not likely to find potatoes. or even name brands. go to any fast food restaurant and you can make wise choices, but the cheaper options are the worst nutriionally. and yes, a sack of raw potatoes is inexpensive compared to processed food. but go look at...

What are some unpopular opinions you hold?

go to ANY inner city (ghetto) grocery - no beans, no fresh produce - none. and yes tap water is cheaper, but bottled generic soda is cheaper than bottled water in most places. and drinking water doesn't make you crave more water, soda does. so even one soda makes you want more soda, like...
