Soundcloud, or Other Site best for mp3's?

Question. I want to upload a bunch of old mp3's from some of my old bands so folks can listen to them. Which is the best place to do that? I've heard of Soundcloud, but don't know anything about it. Is it any good? Are there any other similar critters which would be better? How's your...

    Crossover Voodoo

I have a friend who's in that field here in Colorado. Those modern high-tech board are really amazing. Most of them, I believe, have negligible current requirements, and get away with incredibly small traces. That whole enterprise is obviously a lot different that what's happening here... Andy

    Crossover Voodoo

Of course, damping factor is load impedance divided by source impedance, but power transfer itself is about Ohm's law, nothing else. As an aside, my understanding of the whole concept of the "transmission line" loudspeaker, in which the backwave is completely absorbed, is based on RF antenna...

Hey- I've got one for you speaker buffs. I posted some pictures of one of my crossovers on my FB page, and got a few comments. Check the comment I got from a guy: "I would add some connectors and signal buffers to isolate the crossover and reduce current pulled from the driver." To...

Replacement Woofers for SWR Goliath II?

A local backline company asked me what woofers would be good replacements for the blown ones in their Goliath cab. Apparently you can't get the genuine ones anymore. Anybody have a good recommendation? Thanks, Andy

Bass Cab with very low response - 20hz

Thanks for pointing that out, Ric. It's getting really hard for me to read these threads... I mean, geez- it's OK to not have any knowledge or experience with the physics of sound and sound reproduction, but people on Talkbass never seem to let that lack of knowledge or experience affect...

    MarkBass Warranty Repair Mess

I haven't read the whole thread, but coincidentally, I heard today from a customer whose MB 800 shuts down when he uses it to drive his 4 ohm Acme 112 Full Range box. Is this a common thing? I'm trying to help him out, but I'm not sure what to tell him, and I have no reason thus far to conclude...

    Acme 2x12 prototype test

It was possible to migrate the contents of the cells using CSV and similar formats, but the actual formulas in the spreadsheets wouldn't go. I tried for almost a year. Of course, the Apple II Prodos OS was completely different than the Mac OS, but still, no need to throw loyal customers under...

    Acme 2x12 prototype test

Cool. I always like it when people like them enough to use them for PA. One of the cleverest things i ever heard was from a guy who had a pair of my 1x10 cabs he was using for PA, along with a single 2x10 unit for his bass. He found that by adding just enough of his bass to the 1x10's, he could...

    Acme 2x12 prototype test

I talked to a guy today who said it's an Iphone problem, not Apple in general. Incidentally, I was using an Apple IIGS when I designed the first Low B-2 system in the early '90's. When Apple converted to the Mac OS, they didn't provide a way to take any of my spreadsheets, which were...

At this time it's only 8 ohm. That's not a big disadvantage, because in the big picture, because the darn thing's so power hungry that most people will need to bridge an amp anyway. I expect the 4 ohm version to be available later. Good to hear from you, Riis. Thanks, Andy

Thanks for chiming in. I had no idea there was a name for it. I first heard of it in Audio magazine in about 1975. This concept is even more important in the case of lightweight enclosures and speaker cones with relatively heavy moving-masses. Andy

    Acme 2x12 prototype test

The only ports are the ones you see. The driver placement has no effect on the actual filter (in the Thiele/Small sense). The opposing drivers make the structure absolutely stable though, and and thereby lowers the distortion, by not "shaking" the cabinet around. And no, I didn't think of it...

Thanks for the post, Bluesy Soul, and for the responses, all. FYI, that 50 lb. cab is made of the ubiquitous foam/luan laminate that has found popularity among many builders. It's very labor intensive, and mass producing them requires a very special edge-banding machine. I'm still working on it...

Cant find low end in Theatre, with 18"

The person who commented that your cabs seem to be out of phase with one another was spot-on. You symptoms suggest exactly that. The other possibility is that the tuning frequency of one or both cabs is too high, which would make it impossible for them to reproduce the "thump" you're looking...

    Amplifying a low F# on a budget?

Wanna bet? Dude- I believe you are well intentioned, but generally speaking, if you haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about, it's probably a good idea to qualify your statement with something like "I've been told..." or "Some people believe..." There are two kinds of people...

You are not working with Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, or with Frank Zappa, I assume. You are working with control freaks. You can do whatever you want, or they want, to the sound of your instrument, and it won't matter. They will continue to be control freaks, and they will start badgering you...

    Bass Cab vs Headphones

There are, of course, some cabs made with the express design goal of emulating the low-coloration sound of headphones or studio monitors. I can't think of any right off hand though. Maybe some of the other posters can help. If you get lucky, you might even find one capable or reproducing the...

Watts; the worst measurement unit ever for amp output?

Yeah,. A better choice of words would have been "polarity." In a DC motor, of course, the EMF would be "back" at ya! It's certainly an antiquated term, in any case.

Cabinet suggestions for 5 string basses

Yeah, I would add that I never heard any 31 hz fundamentals on a Beatles album, or the Stones, or Motown, or Wrecking Crew, and that ultimately, this is a question unrelated to artistic merit. But I've heard them here: Nuthin' wrong with that. And there are pieces of music which simply...

Watts; the worst measurement unit ever for amp output?

The waveform of the Back EMF is an exact reflection of instantaneous VC velocity, dx/dt, if you will. Designers of servo-corrected systems will sometimes drop an extra turn or two into the gap, to provide an exact real-time picture of what the voice coil is doing, such that the servo circuits...

Watts; the worst measurement unit ever for amp output?

A deep understanding of the nature of Back EMF is utterly unnecessary when designing a loudspeaker. Or playing music, for that matter. I suppose that would be the definition of geeked out. A
