    Best Prog albums?

No Tool? Or are you trying to stay away from prog metal? Also, Opeth's newest album "Heritage" strayed off their typical metal leanings into an, IMO, very King Crimsony album.

New GHS Flats, Is this gonna be a problem?

The E on my Fender 9050s does the same thing. Never noticed any difference in playability or sound.

    Can you read music?

Yes, but not as well as I'd like to. Can't quite sight read bass clef, really have to think about treble.

Good books for the history of bass

I've been playing bass for years now, and recently I've been feeling a desire to get to know the history and back story behind it, specifically Fender basses. (I love my P, and I don't feel there's anywhere better to start learning about the history of the instrument.) Do you know of any good...

Bass players known only to other bass players.

Already saw him mentioned, but Pino. I think he's one of the most underrated bassists out there. Someone who has been a big influence to me that I don't feel gets enough recognition is Tommy Shannon

SOLD FS 2 Fender Jazz basses (Geddy and a fretless)

College kid low on funds or I'd be all for the fretless :( Good luck with the sell, though!

    East Tennessee Talkbass

Norris Lake is the one closest to me. Flat Hollow Marina on the Claiborne/Campbell line I know has live bands on a regular basis.

    East Tennessee Talkbass

Late to the party it seems haha, but Cumberland Gap checking in here. I'll definitely be checking this thread for shows in featuring local TBers!

    Bassists on the Uke?

Don't own one, but I love the instrument to death. My bass mentor probably owns about 10 or 15. When he started having so many, I started messing around with it and realized it's a whole lot of fun. Still waiting to pull the trigger on buying one though.

    What's your favorite wide strap?

Another nod to Levy's. Love mine, and they'll be the only straps I buy unless something else knocks them off.

something between chromes and ghs precision flats?

Recently put a set of Fender flats. They're great, and fit in right where you want your string to be tension and tone wise.

    Your favorite Metallica instrumental

Has to be Orion. Great song, and great bass work too!

Can you recommend a bridge pickup for me?

Alrighty. I'd check Seymour Duncan's Classic Stack J and Vintage J, if I was in your position. But probably a bit biased. I know a lot of guys are Lindy Fralin and Dimarzio fans as well too though.

    Just random bass thoughts

I'm with ya here. There are some shapes that are so iconic for either basses or guitar that, aesthetically, they just don't work with me when seen on the opposite. The ones you mentioned being fine examples. They may play fine, but I just find it odd.

    p or j bass for a female?

Yup. The exact bass I had in mind.

Can you recommend a bridge pickup for me?

Personally, I'm a fan of P/J configurations. A Jazz pick up would be nice. Passive speaking, and with me loving my Seymour Duncan Precision Quarter Pounder, SD has a lot of jazz pick up options. Wanting a 4 or 5 string? And what is your body and fingerboard wood going to be?

    p or j bass for a female?

+1. Quicker jazz neck, P body, and one pick up of each. Well worth the extra bucks, in my opinion.

    Your Favorite Fender Bass?

Big fan of all the possibilities with tone in a Deluxe Precision. My vote.

Heard that on the GC salespeople. I don't fool around with them.

    Best Method to Compare Amps

I'm seriously considering buying a new amp with money from my summer job, and I'm wanting to go to my local GC to really sit down and play through several amps. I'm currently considering both Acoustic and Ampeg's mini stacks, but who know what will come up. I've heard two different schools of...

Which 2 bassist had the biggest impact on your style ? V2.0

Depends on what I'm playing. If I lean to my metal side, Cliff Burton and Steve Harris My bluesier, rockier side would John Paul Jones and Tommy Shannon

I was advised to use a Jazz Bass.. help!

Yup. This guy. But on topic, I agree with studio J and live Ray.

    minor key progression

It depends really. Some songs I view as minor, and some songs I take back to major. I'm sure there's some real technical, theory related way to tell, but mostly if the first chord is a minor than I say it's the minor key.

    Recommend acoustic guitar <$300?

Yamaha. I ALWAYS recommend them. After 3 years of bass and just kinda derping around on guitar, I decided I finally wanted to get an acoustic guitar. From my experience at my local pawn shop, they made guitars with great value on their lower end guitars. Got one just last Christmas, and my good...

Most 60s sounding Hollow/Semi Hollow Body Bass - Need definitive answer!

+1. Came to say Hofner. And for a 60s sound? There's my pick.
  26. P

What strings are the brightest sounding?

If you're thinking Rotosound, and wanna talk about bright, it doesn't get much brighter than what Geddy Lee plays. Rotosound 66's would be the way to go there.

What strings are the brightest sounding?

I've used Blue Steels for a while as well. They don't settle and mellow out quite as much as others, and are very bright new.

Help me pick the color of my new bass!!

My decision was made completely by just one rosewood fretboard. Never liked a maple P near as much as a rosewood.

    David Ellefson bass sound

Was gonna mention the pick usage. Key to his tone, if you ask me.

Upgrade pup for fender am special jazz

Definitely passives. I'm a big SD guy myself. Unsure about their jazz pups, but my precision quarter pounders are great.

Upgrade pup for fender am special jazz

What style are you wanting to play with it, and what wood is the fretboard? That'll make a huge difference on what direction you want to take your pickups.

What was the first song you learned on bass?

Seven Nation Army. Still love the line, and it's stuck in my head so much from learning it early that I often checks how my A is tuned by playing it and tuning the other strings from there instead of high to low like most.

    Suggestion Required

I know I'm in the minority, but I've never cared too much for Music Man. Don't think I've played the Ibanez, but my local GC has a 5 string American Deluxe Jazz with a maple neck that is to die for listed at 1800. If I wasn't a broke college kid I would have bought it on the spot. Also, as other...

Probably not to be honest haha, no shame.

    Studying the Lemon Song

Yes, it is twelve-bar blues in the key of E. And you are correct about the progression. Like you said, there's a lot of chromatic approach to the song, but with the core progression there are no flats. Really don't know how to explain how to tell that, but with that you can know the song is just...

    John Paul Jones fan club?

You mean there is another Poore who plays bass?
  37. P

    John Paul Jones fan club?

In my opinion, he's the greatest rock bassist ever. Like you said, he was able to play notes on top of notes, but he always made it fit. That's a special skill that not many have. He is one of my absolute favorites and a big inspiration. Really surprised you found little appreciation.
  38. P

Double Bass Key to playing fast, even 16th notes?

Start with slower tempos. Maybe triplets that use 16th, 16th, 8th before straight 16s. Also, if you don't already (I have a hard time doing it) I'd learn to use your ring finger. I can't imagine how much easier they'd be for me if I learned how to use my ring finger early on.

Opinions on Acoustic 260 Mini Stack

Didn't know Ampeg had a similar mini! Obviously Ampeg's reputation speaks for itself, so I'll definitely have to try that out.

    Is Questlove a Great Drummer?

Questlove's great. Not super flashy/filly/busy, but has serious groove and knows how to do a whole lot with a little. Always fits the song perfectly. I love Questlove, and he's one of my favorites.
