NBD (sigh!) I said I wouldn’t do this, but… Fender Custom Shop FTW!

Congrats! I have a ‘66 FCS in IBM. Sweet basses.

Storing empty cases in the attic?

Bats are protected here in Savannah. Pest removal services won't interfere (during specific times of the year) if they are up there. Bats definitely inhabit homes and attics here. I'd also be worried about insects and squirrels up in the attic. So that's a "No" for me, if you want to keep your...

NBD Rickenbacker 4005xc and a terrifying experience with very happy outcome.

That is a very pretty bass! I have one in Jetglo. Now I am a little worried about the truss rod on mine. :dead:

    Multiples of the same bass

If you own two basses, just make sure they are the two you are most excited/likely to play. No need to overthink things. I currently own two 4003s and a Precision. I sold my Jazz and a fretless because they didn't get much use. Owning two of the same does not bother me when I play those basses...

    Do I deserve "Producer" credit?

I haven't read the entire thread but, based on the OP, No. Sounds like the Engineer you have hired is sticking pretty closely to an Engineer's role. Several of the duties you described are more more Manager and Musician duties than Producer duties. But it also sounds like these...

Ordered a Rickenbacker 4003 yesterday, any advice?

I currently own 4003 basses from 2015 and 2018. They play and sound great. Good value for American workmanship IMO. A lot of people complain about the old bridge but I haven't seen complaints about the new one. Personally, I think the previous bridges are just fine. The saddles may need a...

Is there really a benefit with "sting-thru" vs toploading?

I had a modern Jazz that had a bridge which supported both. I tried it both ways and I preferred the bass top-loaded.

Are higher priced Fenders really worth it?

OP, if the "tone quality" (timbre?) is indistinguishable to you and you prefer the look and feel bass you already have… then just save your money and be happy. I happen to own three of the same Les Pauls, two of the same Teles, and two of the same 4003s. Same model, different pieces of wood...

What has been your favorite purchase in 2019 , so far anyway?

I picked up a new Midnight Blue 4003 which was mostly funded by the Jazz Bass I sold. I am a multi-instrumentalist. My favorite purchase of the year has been the Custom Shop Jazzmaster.

New thing in town.. Eliminating set times... as a show of "support"

That's not a new thing but it's certianly not normal. I never liked the practice. People want to support you or come out and have a good time and attend your show, but they are far less inclined to when they are expected to spend 4 hours at the event. Sure, some people have no problem spending 4...

OPINION POLL: Jazz bass or Precision bass?

Precision for me. No contest. I have both. My Precision gets way more use. Getting it to sit perfectly in the mix is usually very easy. As a bonus, I like the neck better. The Jazz is obviously capable of more tones, but it just typically demands more fiddling to get it to sit right. If I...

A poll that all members MUST participate in (including lurkers)...

I have a recording background. Clicks are essential. Therefore, I responded "Can't imagine life without one!". I am able to imagine life without one; It just wouldn't be pretty in a lot of cases when recording. That doesn't mean every time I practice, I practice with a click.

What's the best modification you've made?

My Jazz Bass came with an active preamp (3 band EQ with sweepable mid frequency) and good pickups. I eventually realized I'd rather have a passive VVT in it and replaced the electronics, wiring, and added better pickups. That was a big improvement to me. Of course, there are players who tend to...

No, Mark did not explain the finish's effect on sound in the video you linked. Mark did not explain that there is no difference in sound; nor did he explain that there is a difference in sound. Guitar Finishes Have No Effect On Sound

Mark explained the rationale for the change (to avoid checking). He then said that the reason for the change has nothing to do with sound. Mark did not say guitar finishes have no effect on sound. Your conclusion that "Guitar Finishes Have No Effect On Sound" based on his explanation is purely...

    2 1x15's or 1 6x10?

If the question is which sounds better, I generally favor Nx10s over 15s. 10s are more responsive due to their size. 15s are 'billowy' and smooth. 10s also have wider dispersion, which helps get a more consistent sound across the room. Fewer speakers equate to less phase cancellation (minimal...

    I've got $2500 for a bass and can't choose!

EDIT: Saw you pulled the trigger on one. Happy NBD! Hope it's a great fit. Sounds like you get along well with P Basses. I'd recommend finding one you love. The American Vintage basses are good. Also, Custom Shop is in your budget. I've owned each (still have the '57 CS, sold the AV58 when...

To compress or not to compress?

    0) Link? I think a bit of context would help us understand whether the author's recommendation is "It's a useful effect", "Always play with a compressor on", or somewhere in between (likely). 1) No. I think a compressor is a useful effect which should be used judiciously. That applies to...

Bassists more likely to suffer from tinnitus?

Since a lot of people mentioning snare drums… I also drum. Most snare wires are made of steel. You can also get them made of brass. Brass is much warmer. IMO it generally sounds better. I rarely use steel these days. A simple wire swap takes away a lot of the harsh bite. I use Puresound brass...

What Amplifier Specifications Do You Feel Is Beneficial?

Yes, the explanations in the Subway manual make sense. However, I was requesting a description along the lines of "The DEEP switch engages a Low Shelf Filter with a cutoff frequency of 85 Hz, gain of 6 dB, and a slope of 6 dB/octave. The DEEP switch also engages a 6 db/octave Low Pass Filter at...

What Amplifier Specifications Do You Feel Is Beneficial?

I think it would be good to include the Pad amount if the spec sheet goes as far as detailing the boost/cut amounts of the EQ. Otherwise, it may make more sense to keep that detail in the manual. As somebody who likes more headroom than most electric bassists, the Pad amount is important to me.

What Amplifier Specifications Do You Feel Is Beneficial?

I wasn't clear enough, sorry. The actual request was for Mesa to disclose the manufacturer and model of the tubes which are supplied with the amp. Yes, Mesa specifies the type of tubes the amp uses (eg 12AX7, 6L6). They also tend to describe the functions/tasks in the manuals, which is great...

What Amplifier Specifications Do You Feel Is Beneficial?

Frequency switches are not always documented well. What exactly does the Deep/Bright/etc switch do on an amp? As an example, this came from a Mesa manual: BOLD punches through with a pronounced bump in these mid and upper mid/ low treble frequencies that will allow you to cut through a dense...

I'd like to know which tubes are used. I'd like to know which speakers are used. If said speaker has no published specification, at least a basic description along the lines of "The speaker is a derivative of a Celestion Vintage 30. It has slightly more low mids and is made in England.". In...

Owning/playing basses of different scale lengths

I use a P Bass and 4003 mostly. I voted Yes. That difference doesn't screw me up much. Different scale lengths on guitar (eg 25.5 vs 24.75) messes me up more than bass.

    Are the big amps history?

Sounds great in theory but most venues simply don't have amazing sound. PAs aren't perfect, acoustics are always a factor, and good luck telling the musicians what tools they must/must not use at your club. Not everybody wants to use Kempers and IEMs. If you use that Kemper (or whatever), the...

Rickenbacker - Why do you love/hate it?

I get that feeling too. Maybe it's balance? For years I thought my J was heavier than my R. A scale disproved that. I stand for hours while playing.

    Are the big amps history?

I'll tell you. Because the alternatives don't have the sound that a player wants. Of course, some bassists prefer the sound of direct bass. Others prefer the sound straight out of their processor. Others prefer the sound and feel of an amp. If somebody (eg who has never heard the band) tells a...
