    Which 9v batteries for active?

:-/ Then I guess buying in bulk for industrial use is the way to go for you lot. Even with a long advertised shelf life, it would take me a long time to get through all the batteries as I only change every 6 months or so. I understand no one wants to open up a control cavity to find a leaky...

    Which 9v batteries for active?

Aldi own brand batteries. A two-pack of 9v blocks costs 1.59€. For that price I don’t care how long they last! But they last a year easily with the frequency I play my MTD. Fresh batteries sound better than near-dead ones for sure. People paying big bucks for “premium” batteries in basses...

    2+3 P-bass 5 string mod

I am currently looking at swapping out the pickups in my yamaha bbp35, which also has an asymmetrical p pickup. You’ll want to measure the pickup dimensions and see if replacement pickups from the likes of SD, Lollar, Nordstrand, Delano etc. fit the cavities. My only concern would be that the...

Bridge pickup buzzes much louder than neck

How’s the shielding in the cavity? If shielding is poor, expect lots of hum. In my Yamaha BBP35 (same Pj config) there’s a lot of single coil hum from the bridge pickup in venues with lots of lights etc. Not much you can do really. As a fix for at home, try sitting further away from your amp...

    Double Bass Transcribing validation?

Where’s the chart you’re referencing? So many lead sheets in the real books have changes that are “wrong”. Lots of recordings of the same tune have variations of certain parts of the melody/progression.

What cheaper model basses will fit in fender precision hardshell case?

Harley Benton. If you’re looking to fly I’d get a better hard shell case than the ones from Fender. It will get totaled on the first trip.

Re-shape Fender Precision "C" neck to an "A"?

I’d say get the bass and see how you get used to it- I used to hate wide p-bass necks and always preferred jazz style necks. I’ve completely changed now since I got my 57 mij reissue. Playing a jazz neck now feels fiddly and a bit cramped. And if you really don’t like it, get a replacement neck!

    Opinions on Yamaha vs Lakland

I had a Korean 55-01 with Nordstrand big singles and sold it to make way for a BBP35. I think they are both good basses but the Yamaha has the more solid low end and the better B despite the shorter scale length. I feel like it’s instrument specific and there will be 55-01s with better Bs than...

Looking for a combo to gig with....

Have the Fender in the music school I work in. It does an ok job but the volume level is just irritating as it gets so loud so quickly that you really don't have the precision you need. Sounds ok though. The Ampeg RB-210 looks ok but it would be a pass for me without semi parametric mids or...

Preamp - DCX Bass or Mantle?

I have the DCX and think it’s a great piece of kit. It sounds and feels high quality. If you don’t need to DI of the Mantle I say get the DCX and save yourself some cash. I only use my DCX as an always on character pedal with very light breakup, but it is much more than that if you want it to...

Low tension strings to counter balance the sound of a 90s era 6string

Then go with the jazz rounds. I found them ridiculously light for my instrument, but Thomastik know what they’re doing. If you like them on the p bass, it’s likely you’ll like them on your 6. Expensive yes but a known expense/experience for you?

Low tension strings to counter balance the sound of a 90s era 6string

Have you considered TI flats on that bass too? Surprisingly articulate on a modern bass with the right pickups. Set is pricey though!

    Olinto flats

Don’t understand what you’re getting at there, but I did not twig that the FL set is indeed .043-.104. I had those strings on my P bass many years ago. Wasn’t a fan, quite dead and unresponsive (on that bass). The Olintos are a little lower in tension but still stable and give good resistance...

A Tale of Two Circles: 112 or 115?

If you like the HD210 (I’d love to get one/two of those!), just get a second one. Mixing drivers and cabs is tricky. Adding a second of the same cab doesn’t change the fundamental tone, but it does make it much bigger and effortless.

My Bongo Is Too Heavy For Me - How Can I Reduce Its Weight?

I’m aware. I still don’t really see how losing a couple of lbs from what is always going to be a fairly hefty instrument will do. It will probably change the tone, not for the better. I had two years of bad sciatica so although I chose against surgery, I’m just gently suggesting that maybe it...

My Bongo Is Too Heavy For Me - How Can I Reduce Its Weight?

Is it possible that you just need to train a bit to get used to it? The weight is really not so heavy that you can’t tolerate it for a few seconds, rather that you can’t deal with it for a gig, right?

Which Bassist was/is a major Influence that motivated you to want play bass?? (Pick one, only)

Flea was probably the first bass player I knew the name of. But when I was a little kid I used to listen to Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs and Dazed and Confused by Zeppelin on repeat. So Duck Dunn and JPJ but before I was even aware of the bass.

Does This 90s SWR Goliath II Have the Original PAS Speakers?

It’s easy enough to take the grill off and take one of the speakers out to have a look. If it’s in working order, I’d say 200$ would be worth it for me. I had a Goliath III back in the day (found it dumped in a park with two broken speakers!). It sounded really good but boy was it a beast to...

    Modern sealed 4x10?

Markbass Classic 104 Casa. Was part of their Michael League signature offering a few years ago. I have one and really like it. The tweeter can be turned down/off, which would probably be preferable for your tube amps. The can is also light for a 410 and not too expensive. The Ampeg 410he also...

    Ampeg venture v7 into SVT212

Is the amp on? Is your bass on? If your bass is active, is the battery dead? Have you tried the aux in on the back of the head with another audio source? Failing all of those, you need to troubleshoot each part of the chain. Confirm with another setup, that your bass and instrument cable work...

    Fodera low B string

Did all the B strings choke out like this one? I haven’t played many Foderas, but the ones I have were set up with extremely low actions, and the B string was just too low. I believe the basses I played were used though so cannot say if they came out the workshop like that. You could ask the...

Sean Hurley plays rounds 90% of the time

Cool solo. If you watch this Vertex effects video with Sean, he plays lots of different instruments with different sounds, but what I took away from the video, was how light his touch is, and how precisely and deliberately he plays. Not flashy, but just what the song needs. Not easy to pull...

    Pain in left hand

    1. A bass teacher can give you advice regarding technique, although that wouldn’t be my primary focus. E.g. if your thumb is not positioned optimally on the back of the neck, you need to invest a lot more energy to hold the strings down without buzzing. 2. The dose makes the poison. Any...

    Thoughts on Bareknuckle Pickups?

Yes. Got the ‘58 split coil in my MIJ precision. No complaints, the bass sounds great. Big improvement over the standard US pickup that was in there. I’m sure they can advise which of their pickups pair best for a PJ setup.

Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

Not really by anything significant, at least in my experience. My BBP35 weighs about 9.4 lb. The 735a I use in the music school is a little bit heavier, but I haven’t weighed it. The active circuit, extra knobs and battery add up to a bit of extra weight.

Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

I have a BBP35 and also bought a BB735 for the music school I work at. The BBP35 definitely has a more refined sound when comparing the basses in passive mode. That IR treatment maybe worked? The neck is also a little slimmer and flatter without the more square shoulder edges of the 735. It’s...

    Question about sealed 4x10 cabs

Unfortunately I can’t really answer that question with much confidence as I never played through the 410HE with my own amp, it was always with a couple of different Ampeg heads, but not with mine, which is a SVT-7 Pro. And I’ve only ever played my Casa with my Ampeg head so I can’t really...
