is it worth buying a 5 strings ?

I have a 4 and a 5, and I'm really happy with them. I too, as another poster stated, would not tune down my 4, I couldn't be bothered with that, as all my own stuff is on standard tune all the time, so if I have to, it's far easier to just pick up the 5 for any lower stuff.

    I'm settled: I only need 2 basses

I have 2, a four and a five, just for sonic variation, altho I could easily get by with one. I've managed to limit GAS pretty well, I guess.

Looking for my first bass, what do you recommend?

I recommend the Eastwood Classic 4...It's not too expensive, good looking and (I believe) well made.

Feel bad that I don't like John Prine

I don't really care for Leonard Cohen, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson or Ed Sheeran; it's either their voices or the music itself, but tons of people love them, I wouldn't worry about it at all. I also don't like the taste or smell of curries, but I have heard people around the globe love them!

    Would you rather...

I actually broke a finger when building many years ago, but not realising it, went on to record a bass track that night with it...(I'd never had anything broken before and thought it was just bruising. It healed up nicely, and the bass track still turned out great lol.

    The importance of design...

Nothing disappoints me more than seeing a stunningly designed (anything), beautifully made and put together, but with one aspect/part that's been poorly styled/positioned or colored, in a way that brings down the rest of it as a whole. I always maintain if you possess great skills at building/...

I would have liked to be the bassist for Dire Straits. "Get my money for nothing and chicks for free." lol.

Struggling with considering moving back to a pick

"It seems like you might be a little picky about this...alas, i just can't put my finger on it..." Seriously, I only play finger style so far...haven't graduated to a pick yet. But then again, the music I play/record doesn't really require the type of sound a pick produces, but that could change...

    Making Peace with My Mediocrity

Dr Cheese, I wouldn't let it get to you too much; a handful of us will become amazing, a lot of us very good, some not bad, and a few not great; it's just the way the ol' bell-graph curve operates. If you are enjoying yourself, and having fun, that's 90% of it right there. I describe myself...

What's your vote for the perfect song?

Hey, Bass, Who's Your Favorite Drummer?

These are my favs: Ringo, Bonham, Moon, Copeland, Collins. All very different, with different levels of ability and strengths, and that's what I appreciate about them.

But do I DESERVE a "nice" bass?

I don't buy instruments very often, so I do a ton of research beforehand; sometimes for several years heading up to the money needed to finally purchase them. I really only have one rule: I don't mind how expensive it is, as long as it earns it keep, and I love using it. So I would say go for...

    Pedals or No pedals!?

I don't use any pedals I think mainly because of the genre/style I play, and the fact I really like the 'pure' sound going in to my recorder. I use a rack mounted compressor going in to my desk, but once in, I don't mind a bit of harmonic distortion experimentation to enhance it. Also, I've...

What's on your G.A.S list and why?

My GAS List is pretty small as far as bass stuff is concerned; I would like an Ampeg PF20T, mainly for practise and recording at home, and ultimately a thunderbird bass. I was really gunning for a PF50T, but really, for what I do here and the fact it has an output for a PA, I think 20W will be...

    Who plays guitar as well?

I play right-handed guitars left-handed (upside down), so some chords are easy, some harder, and some unachievable in their proper/full sense, causing me to lean towards partial/fractured/improvised chords. This tends to give my playing a slightly unique tone/sound. I started fooling around on...

I think it gets you a really nice bass, amp, vehicle to drive said rig to venues , and something really nice for the wife!
