Double Bass Jazz Conduction Butch Morris

I played for a while in the London Improvisers Orchestra, which grew out of a Butch Morris tour and carries on more-or-less in his method... was interesting but ultimately not for me

Double Bass Need help finding a good quality, entry-level bass in Europe

Hello and good luck with your new bass journey! If you could narrow down 'Europe' a bit we might be able to recommend a dealer/shop where you could try some basses out... Opinions vary but in my experience you're more likely to find a nice instrument for a reasonable amount of money looking at...

Double Bass Aguilar amp/ cab for upright and electric? Which one?

Yes, exactly that. I've never needed more power than the TH350 offers, in venues that size there's always a PA I never use other effects - just use the built in EQ. Obviously varies by room but very simple to use and to my ears consistently clean, transparent and accurate

Double Bass Aguilar amp/ cab for upright and electric? Which one?

I have no experience of Aguilar cabs, but in my opinion the Tonehammer 350 is a fantastic amp for double bass, as good as anything I've used (and as a touring musician I've used most of them!)

    Double Bass Mingus songs

"Right Now" is amazing! There are plenty of Mingus albums with greater horn players but for bass/drums interaction it's one of Mingus' greatest recordings

Double Bass Drew Gress WOW !!!

Yeah, 'Forms' is great! For some reason I don't think I've ever checked out the quartets with Smoker, I will do Was funny reading back through this old thread - reading myself nearly 25 years ago is a bit weird! But my enthusiasm for Gress' playing hasn't dimmed at all in that time

Double Bass John Scofield on Giant Steps

And then he goes further and realises he can use what he's finding while the rest of the band are playing 1 chord vamps or completely free - Coltrane used those ideas for the rest of his life, theres plenty of Giant Steps on "Live in Japan"

Thanks Chris. It's a group that initially formed to play Andrew Hill and Booker Little compositions, and then gradually transitioned to originals which has been a really interesting way to approach developing a collective approach. The bass is a gorgeous violin cornered French bass made by...

    Double Bass RIP Ray Drummond

That Johnny Griffin record EI mentions is great - fantastic burning version of Autumn Leaves There's a particular late 70s/early 80s take on straight ahead swing which Drummond really personified, along with Buster Williams and a few others - aggressive, growling, laying it down but also...

    Double Bass RIP Ray Drummond

    Double Bass Best Gigging Cabinet

I use a Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 with a Barefaced Super Midget and love the combination - although since I got a Barefaced One10 the Super Midget doesn't leave the house, even though its the better cab of the two

Double Bass Looking for recordings that have good examples of tension and release

All good jazz recordings are full of tension and release, and if they want to learn to play jazz they're going to need to listen to loads of jazz, not just some time stamped youtube edits... maybe start them off with the Hot Fives and Sevens? You couldn't hope for more dynamic and joyous tension...

Double Bass Olie Brice Quartet - All It Was

Yeah, I share a lot of that. Playing with amazing and intense drummers has had a lot to do with developing my sound and also with the sound I've aimed at - Mark Sanders and Jeff Williams in particular. And Spiritual Unity Peacock is rarely far from my mind!

Double Bass Olie Brice Quartet - All It Was

As far as I recall - and not 100% confident I'm remembering correctly - I wasn't using headphones but the other three were. My preference is always not to if I can get away with it, and being partially screened off helps - I could still hear the others acoustically but was getting some of...

Double Bass Does anyone here listen to electronic music?

I think the opposite is true - Autechre in recent years have developed in really exciting and definitely less conventional ways, to me they're by far the most exciting these days of the classic Warp era scene. Here's a good example of where they've gone:

Double Bass How do you play 10ths

I think its important to be able to play 10ths in tune with either 1st or 2nd finger on the bottom, to have flexibility regarding where you're coming from and going. I would also use 1st finger for both notes of a minor 10th in some circumstances I think 10ths are among the most beautiful...

For sale Bohemian flatback, late 19th century, UK

I'm selling my bass. Probably a late-19th century Bohemian instrument, formerly block-less and once upon a time a 3 stringer, although it had a block fitted and a new neck sometime before I bought it. Recently serviced and set up by Laurence Dixon, who's been looking after it as long as I've had...
