Do people really choose one or another bass only because of the pickups?

I buy based on the feel of the neck and how well it balances on a strap. If there is even the slightest neck dive or the bass feels overly heavy or the neck is too chunky I will pass. I also don't care for garish colors like neon or bright pinks, etc. Pickups and preamps are pretty easy to...

    Trouble in Band #2!

I actually kind of like those choices and can personally attest that Suffragette City will slay. I was in a band that played that one pretty regularly and when the "Wham, bam thank you man" line came up we would stop and let the entire crowd yell it. Worked every single time. The cover bands in...

    Guitarists who overplay

I played in a power trio with a singing guitarist for a few years. He was a fantastic guitarist and pretty good singer but I LOVED the fact that his vocalizing tended to curb his playing in the verses. He would simplify or drop out completely leaving gobs of sonic space for the rhythm section...

    wearing shades on stage

I don't wear sunglasses on stage however I do wear glasses and they are transitions so if I'm playing outdoors in sunshine, they will darken on their own and look like sunglasses. Also I wear hats. I'm a hat man and love to wear hats. Generally a baseball cap but I've also been known to don the...

How well do other band members need to hear you?

I'm guessing that since you're fitting into songs that have already been written, they just assume you're playing the established bass part? If it were me and a new member asked about changing a part, I would definitely want to hear what they were doing to not only make sure they were playing...

the HIGHs of putting down a bass line to an original song

I've played in original projects for most of my musical life and only recently joined the cover band scene. I enjoy both and find them to be very different animals. Cover bands CAN be creative with the right approach but it takes everyone in the group to really do something different than what...

Anyone still gig their old lead sleds?

I brought my old gear out when I started playing again after many years. This was 2017. On my way home from that first practice I thought to myself "There has got to be newer lighter gear out there now than this old 80's stuff!" That was when I discovered the wonders of class D amplification and...

    Genz Benz shuttle 6.0

Late to the party, but just want to say that I currently own the Shuttlemax 12.0 which is very similar to the Shuttle 6.0. I had @agedhorse fix an overheating issue with it a few years ago and it has been running without issue since. It is far and away my favorite amp. You'll love the 6.0 if you...

How many different pedalboards do you regularly use?

I have a big board and a small board. The small board is tuner, compressor, q/strip and is mainly for home practice though my audio interface. The big board is tuner, hpf/lpf, compressor, envelope filter, eq/boost, distortion. The first three pedals are always used and the other three are song...

    Is My Bandmate Being Unreasonable?

I don't see any reason to be "Honest" if that means telling him you don't like his songs. I also don't think he's being unreasonable at all. He wants to take the band in a new direction and is seeking your commitment to same. I appreciate when people say things to me like "This is the new...

Lessons learned from Bands in General

I'd have dropped those bands too. I've been in a few with unserious people but overall have been lucky to find bands with good folks who like to play and take it seriously while having fun. It can be tough to identity the unserious ones during an audition because hopefully everyone is on their...

    Nordstrand Zen blades w/Aguilar OBP2

I have the Zen Blades installed in my Lakland 55-01 with a John East Uni Pre. The pickups came with instructions for how to install them in either series or parallel mode. I installed them in series and they sound great but that mode takes some of the top end off so if you want to slap or just...

What Makes a Bass Feel Right to You?

The way the bass sits on my midsection (Laklands are my favorite for this but MTD is also great). I want ZERO neck dive and a flat-ish neck. I have small hands so I've found that wide necks don't bother me at all but fatter necks front to back are not comfortable. Everything else I can work with...

What’s the minimum distance where you’re willing to carpool for an out of town gig?

100% agree. When I'm ready to go I am ready to GOOOOO and I don't need to be waiting for someone who wants to yak all day with whoever might be around. Anyone who wants to carpool with me would need to sign an affidavit that they will pack up immediately after the last song and be ready to go...

    Semi-hypothetical question re: a 'gig'

I'm assuming the "donating my time in the role until there was money to be split between everybody." comment means that you rehearse and then when you gig, everyone gets paid. I've never been in a band that paid players to rehearse so I certainly wouldn't have a problem joining a band on spec...

    John East Uni-Pre

Same except in my case it's in a Lakland 55-01. I had to play with the layout a bit before I wired it all up but overall it was pretty easy and your bass will sound awesome once you do it. If it doesn't fit, I imagine you shouldn't have too much trouble selling it here as they are highly regarded.

Whats the strangest thing an audience member has ever said to you at a gig

A dude and his buddy asked me what I did for a living during a break. When I told them I worked in I.T. they looked crestfallen and one of them said "We were guessing dentist." Apparently I don't look like a Rawk Star. lol

Trending? How many of us have gone totally amp-free?

One band doesn't like to put me through the PA so I bring my 2x10 and blast away. I've offered many times to be put through the FOH and turn down my amp but they've always said no. I'm going full IEM in my other band with one caveat: venues where a PA and sound man are provided are usually more...

    Lakland vs Sadowsky

Yeah, they're kind of an acquired taste I suspect. I had an L-2500 tribute that I liked, but the string spacing got me. I prefer 19mm. I'd totally buy one of the 750s if I didn't already own 9 basses.

    Lakland vs Sadowsky

Not a 1:1 but I own a 44-14 and a Korean made 55-01. Both have a natural ash body with maple neck/fretboard. The 44-14 is really nice, but I'm not sure it's THAT much nicer than the 55-01. The 44-14 has nicer grain in the ash body and a smoother feel to the neck. The electronics should be the...

    MTD Question

I have small hands and love my MTDs. I currently own a Kingston Super 5 and an older Grendel. Both are 35' scale and 19mm string spacing. I've found that for me, the width of the neck from top to bottom is less important than the width front to back. I much prefer a flatter neck profile front to...

What are your strategies and tactics for booking an originals band?

I play in an originals band that has been together for over seven years. In my city (Sacramento) there are a few places where original bands can play a 45 minute set with 2-3 other bands so initially, we booked ourselves at those venues. We didn't care for that model, though because the venues...

Active/passive controls or the lack thereof

That makes sense. I've actually considered removing the battery from one of my active/passive basses that has a switch so I could leave it plugged in all the time and just use the switch on the bass as a mute switch. I could see that being a fairly handy feature and I have plenty of preamp...

Active/passive controls or the lack thereof

I love active basses and have been playing them since the early 90's. I currently have a few that have the active/passive switch and a few that are active-only. Having the switch gives me peace of mind that I can run the bass without a battery and finish the gig if necessary, but here's the...

How do you manage to schedule gigs?

Similar to what others have said, one of my bands uses Time Tree instead of Google Calendar, but it's the same principle. Everyone adds their black out dates and is responsible for maintaining their own schedule. But honestly, if I found myself in a situation where through whatever set of...

Which active basses have true bypass, passive tone control etc?

I have John East preamps installed in several of my basses. The uni-pre has independent active and passive signal paths which I read to mean that when you switch to passive mode, you are completely bypassing the active pre-amp. Not sure which, if any, basses come from the factory with it...

Low pass filter to be placed at amp's direct out?

If I was looking to solve this specific problem and assuming you're not using IEMs, I'd use a preamp pedal that has a parallel output so I could run an EQ'd signal from the XLR out to the board and an untouched signal from the parallel out to my amp for on-stage monitoring. I have a Tech 21...

Is There A Head With 2 Internal Amps And 2 Separate Speaker Outs

Not a bass head, but the power amps I use to run my PA have two inputs, power amps and speaker outs. If you run a preamp pedal in front of each channel, that would probably get what you want done, wouldn't it? I'm thinking like a QSC GX7 or similar.

Do you bring you prized basses to local watering holes?

I answered yes on the poll, but my nicest bass is an MTD Grendel that only cost me $1000 so it's not like I'm bringing some massively expensive custom axe to my gigs. Still, it's a really nice bass that SHOULD have cost a lot more and Grendels are hard to find so it would be difficult to replace...
