What, exactly, is a professional musician?

Professional Musician - lots of qualifiers (and non qualifiers ~wink~) for this one... I have earned my living in music always, whether it be clubs, touring, demos, master sessions, and plenty of production related gigs, in some shape or form, it has always been music related. I know VERY...

Why are Ampeg SVTs so popular?

I see several excellent points here: 1. Yes, they are iconic and like fender many people associate that tone with "bass". 2. No, there is no such thing as a "solid state" SVT. If you own a piece of equipment that says "SVT" on it, and it doesn't have 14 vacuum tubes and weigh 97lbs, you don't...

How hard is it to load a 100lb cab?

Excellent tone will nearly always be two things: Expensive and Heavy. The question becomes how committed are you to excellent tone? Look to those that are succeeding and excelling at the thing you want to be. What are they using? I don't know what the exact percentages are but more often than...

    Basses falling out of favor...

Sometimes it goes even deeper for me. I fall in and out of love with pick-ups. I've got shoe boxes full of pick-ups that I have installed / removed / installed / removed in multiple instruments. I have this Creme Bartolini P-bass pick-up that I KNOW I have installed over a dozen times in 3 or 4...

I don't know a lot about them. I have a very good friend in Nashville that had a pair of them in road cases he was trying to get rid of. I've never played through one but I know enough pro guys that have to assume its a real box.

    Tube recommendation for Anpeg SVT

Oddly enough, if you have a Hamfest (Ham Radio Convention) that comes anywhere close to you, this is THE PLACE to find NOS tubes. Make the relationships with these people. I have huge stockpiles of NOS Sylvania, RCA, and GE tubes. You may have to do a little digging through some dusty old boxes...

NAD/new nightstand day, my very 1st SVT!!!

Too funny, I was going to go pick this amp up on Monday. Someone sent me a link to the Craigslist ad and I contacted him yesterday. I'm in Atlanta for a few days and I was going to circle back and buy this early next week. Congratulations! Great find!

She has certainly been "babied" since I have owned her! Many of these amps have interesting stories and this one is no different. In the early 90's I had the opportunity to play with a very significant bluegrass legend, even though my standup skills weren't (and still aren't) great. After 1 or 2...

I have often said that this very well might be the best sounding single amplifier I have ever heard. As far as I can tell the only modification ever done to this amp is the black plastic "paddle" power switch was replaced. This is not uncommon for this era Ampeg amp. I've used this amp both for...

I'm a south side guy (South Fulton, Forest Park...) so I'm sure we know many of the same people and maybe played some of the same venues. I had a band with the guys I grew up playing with called "Wizard". We were all huge Mother's fans so it was our tribute to Jerry. Like many, I played...

I don't know Dennis but we have spoken, both in person and by phone, several times over the years. He played a big role in authenticating my 68' prototype and, as it turned out, knew the original owner that I got the amp from. Super nice guy, very informative. There are only a few guys like...

I'll tell you what I'm going to do... I'll find a place and date to set it all up. I could do a minimum of 8 heads and 8 cabs (maybe more) and make a YouTube video of it. And just so, the stage doesn't flip over from all the weight on one side, we'll put the Marshall's on the other side. How's...

Interesting question. Most guys my age started with or very early on had at least 1 Kustom amp or cab. I was no different. I had a couple of Kustom cabs at one point and to be perfectly honest with you that stuff sounded terrible. They made a 2 x 15 cab and maybe a 3 x 18 super tall cab and both...

More often than not, you're going to play through something that has a "Peavey" logo on it... Interestingly they used the SVT-DI out at Acuff for years almost exclusively. I think most of them were destroyed in the flood of 2010. I still see an occasional one being used but not many, and not often.

You can find them out there. It's funny, a good friend of mine compared them to 3-bolt Stratocasters. We never thought back in the day that those guitars would be looked upon fondly or have any real vintage value. Boy, were we wrong! I think the same is true for the Mag SVT's. I typically pass...

Those magnavox amps are beautiful! Look to be very early and VERY clean! I've only owned a couple of these and I found them to be significantly louder than the Linden amps. That rig right there would run you out of a BIG room! Awesome!

Certainly a prevailing opinion out there and depending on the gig, I might agree with you (I have old fliptops too ~wink~). I will say this though, it has been my experience that true epic tone comes with a price AND chances are very good it's going to be heavy. This is not exclusive to bass...

I played through a CL in NYC (backline rental) once and it sounded fine. It's just not the same tone. The old 69-72 amps are angrier sounding, even at minimal volume. I thought the CL was glassier and very clean. Not at all a bad thing. I would bet they sound awesome with a Stingray. I was...

It's my opinion that the cabinet cut off date is 79' for 810 cabs. The MTI stuff and beyond has never really measured up. Magnivox changed over to the "towel bar" dolly style cab in 76' and that's most of what you see out there. They are easier to move if you don't have cases and sound nearly...

The difference is immense! These amplifiers were meant to run at 2 ohms and i would argue that if you have never experienced an SVT with 16 10's (2 cabs) you really have never heard the amp. That being said, the one cab / 4 ohm solution is still pretty spectacular. I would point to several...

To the right of the flat back cabs is my "bus rig" (it fits easily under a bus in the bays). It is a very rare SVT-300 all tube amp in the lower rack and an SVP-Pro with a tuner and a power strip in the top. I recently had an offer from someone to buy that rig and I may very well sell it. All i can say is the collection was unintentional in the beginning. I've been a touring musician most of my life so I would always be sure to have a spare head with me. 2 turned into 3, turned into 10+... At some point I became aware of the Blue Line value and so I started trolling for them...
