Don't want to beat it up... am I weird for this?

I don't think you're weird or crazy or anything negative. I'm not in a band, not yet anyway, but I'm very persnickety about the condition of all of my guitars and basses. And I've been playing for a long, long time. I had to work hard for all of them, and want to preserve them in pristine...

Can anyone explain vintage rick copies going for over $800?

I don't know this to be the case in what you're stating, but there are counterfeit guitars out there. A good luthier can spot a fake in a few seconds...

Neighbor boy wants to borrow bass & amp before deciding to buy?

Sorry for your loss. I would not lend them. What if there's an accident and they get damaged? I think they may be worth more than you were offered. But that's just me. My brother loaned a friend a guitar, a very nice one, and it disappeared.

    Explain the Fender Bass VI

Off-hand, the only two people I can remember using a Fender Bass VI are Glen Campbell (Wichita Lineman) and George Harrison on the "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Fender reintroduces Bass VI periodically, but it's not much of a mainstay like the Precision or Jazz Bass. I messed with...

    Explain the Fender Bass VI

Any screw-down type of clamping capo should work, and you can always add a layer or two of rubber to the clamp face that presses against the strings. You could build up the clamp string contacting face by adding a layer or two of RTV to that part of the capo. Just make sure you wait a day or...

If you had $2,000 to buy a (used) bass - what would you get? (4 strings, passive)

I like it! I started out with a 2014 Fender Precision Bass, but it didn't fit my hands, and I'd come from a guitar background. In 2018 I replaced it with a Fender Mustang PJ. With the PJ you get a Precision and a Jazz pickup, so you get a little of both. It fits me perfectly.

    Fender Mustang Club

I'm in! I played six string electric and acoustic for decades. I got a Fender Precision Bass and as great as it was, my fingers were just not "trained" for a 34" scale. No matter what I did, if I took my eyes off it, I screwed up. IMHO, nothing beats a Fender P-bass tone-wise, but if you...

    Fender PJ Mustang

I'm extremely happy with my 2018 Fender Mustang PJ Bass. Having played regular electric six string guitars for over four decades, I found the fret spacing between frets extremely difficult to master on my regular 2014 Fender Precision Bass. My wife supplied the answer: "What good is the best...

Should I refinish my Spector? Poll.

Whatever you decide to do, please just be advised that lacquer is going to be a whole lot more difficult--and much longer, to work with than polyurethane or polyester. I set aside a '72 Fender Telecaster I was refinishing in Arctic White nitro. It had hung for two weeks on a coat hangar...

What's wrong with the Fender Dimension Basses?

Yes Sir, I agree with your assessment completely. People, and musicians especially are creatures of habit and while we are willing to explore new things, we tend to default to the "tried and true".

What's wrong with the Fender Dimension Basses?

Well, whatever it is, Fender sure dropped it like a hot potato! I didn't buy into their advertising, and I'm a loyal Fender guy from way back. I've never played one, but IMHO, compared to a Precision, Tele, Jaguar or Jazz Bass, it's not aesthetically pleasing. The Fender Rascal Bass looks...

    String through body or bridge?

Several years ago when I was looking for my first "good" bass, it came down to two Fender Precisions, one MIM and the other an American Standard with custom shop pickups. Besides heavier and better hardware on the American model, it also gave me the string-through option; and that was one of...

blend knobs - yay or nay?

Can't say regarding bass, but both of my Rickenbackers (a 2009 360/12 string and a 2011 330/6 string have the blending pot, and I like it, but I wouldn't call it a deal-breaker if I was looking at something I liked. It's a nicety but not an absolute must-have). Off-hand I can't think of any...

I dreamed all my basses got stolen.

Wow, that WOULD be a nightmare! FWIW, I recently called my insurance company, USAA, and got all of my guitars and basses insured against theft and loss, as part of my auto insurance. It's not very much, only added about $75 to my annual auto insurance policy--and I've got quite a few guits and...

    Fender Mustang PJ Bass

@cavemanbass I think you make a valid point and I agree. I can't say as I'm familiar with the Mustang VM or CV bass as such, since I consider myself a fairly novice bassist compared to a lot of players, but I think you make some good and valid points. My memory isn't what it used to be. I...

what basses haven't worked out for you... and why?

As surprising as it might seem, a 2014 American Precision Standard didn't work for me. I love the design, and I love the tone, but it just proved to be too much guitar for me. Having come from decades of six string guitar, I just could not make the stretch on the lower frets. A 34" scale just...

I'm having trouble seeing dot markers on rosewood fingerboards

Sounds like your light availability is less than ideal for your needs. Just a suggestion, but you might try some international orange or rally green painted over your fingerboard edge dots. Any type fluorescent paint would help, and if you could lay or mount a black light on your amp or nearby...

What kind of strings do you use?

Admittedly, I'm old school being influenced by classic pros like James Jamerson and Carol Kaye, Motown and pop-rock. Even into early psychedelics, bass players like Mitch Mitchell with Jimi Hendrix were using flats. Until the early to mid 70's, flat wounds were pretty much the standards in...

How is Ampeg quality with new ownership?

Sadly, Ampeg has changed owners several times, but that seems to be the trend in musical equipment makers, in a very competitive market. IMHO, the best ones were tube amps made back in the 60's, with the flip top cabinets where you could store the tube top inside for transporting. They still...

If you had $2,000 to buy a (used) bass - what would you get? (4 strings, passive)

Honestly, if I had the fingers, I would buy a Rickenbacker 4001/4003. I had to learn the hard way with a Fender 2014 MIA Fender Precision. Great bass, excellent bass, but having small hands with short fingers and coming from decades on six string, I just couldn't make it work for me...

    Fender Mustang Club

Totally agree! If you're going to invest good money in a PJ (or any decent bass for that matter), why scrimp on protection for it? I'm not saying it has to be a Fender case, since there are plenty of aftermarket cases (cheaper) and can still adequately protect it. I once bought a Rickenbacker...

    Fender Mustang Club

I was just looking at that myself. I think that for the PJ, with the Jazz Bass pickup installed where Fender put it, the standard Mustang Bass bridge won't fit. At least it doesn't look like it. There are other bridges which should fit the PJ, if that's a deal breaker. I like the stock PJ...

    Paul McCartney and his Basses

I've traveled a similar road as you, and I've learned a whole lot since coming over to bass. James Jamerson was to Motown what Carol Kaye was to the Wrecking Crew.

    Recommedation on Fender Mustang Strings

Hi Andrew, Your Mustang Bass more than likely did come with flat wounds. I've even seen some with black nylon tape flat wound as well--a long time ago. Flat wounds were standard on pretty much all basses until about the mid-70's when round wounds came out and eclipsed them in popularity...

    String through body or bridge?

I've been thinking about it too. I've got a Fender Mustang PJ Bass, which I got on a trade-in last summer from a 2014 Fender AS Precision Bass. (Yeah, I know, it sounds insane, but the PJ works better for me.) The American Standard does have the option to string through the body, and that's...

The warranty should cover something like this. They sent you a defective instrument and I know you paid a good $500 or more for it. You shouldn't have to do anything about it, Fender should fix it free.

    Help me understand this mentality

People today are entirely self-centered. All they care about are themselves. The only time they are interested in anybody else, is when they can use them. Once they are done with you, they toss you aside like an orange peel. I've had people do this who weren't even in the music business. I...

    Explain the Fender Bass VI

Glen Campbell used one way back in the 70's when he had his own show. George Harrison is pictured with one in the video of "Hello, Goodbye" and maybe on the album cover of Sgt Peppers.
