    Carlo Robelli Club!

I have joined the Carlo Robelli club for the low price of $0! The other day, I was walking around my neighborhood with a friend, and we went down a street I don't usually walk on, and one house had a bunch of stuff sitting in front of it, including an electric bass! I looked very carefully for...

    The Rickenbacker Club Part Twelve

Hi all! I know I don't check back in often, but here's a photo of me playing my 4003W with my band Burn Together last night! The Rick always serves me well (even if I do look like I'm wondering what that smell is).

Why is the Markbass sound often referred to as "muddy"? Was this an issue specific to their older gear?

In all fairness, a lot of people don't have the owner's manual. If you go to a rehearsal space or a venue and find an amp, the owner's manual is never going to be there with it, and "Wait! I must find, download, and study the manual!" is not going to be most people's first priority. Also...

Why is the Markbass sound often referred to as "muddy"? Was this an issue specific to their older gear?

This might be it exactly. I haven't played through a Markbass much, but I remember that when I did, I scorned the VLE and VPF as "please muddy up my tone" knobs.

    What's On Your Workbench?

The output jack on my Epi Thunderbird 60's had become a little loose, so I opened up the backplate to tighten the jack (and put a little threadlocker on it for good measure). That was easy enough and no trouble. But what odd thing did I discover while I was doing this? The screws for the...

Played my 4003W at a gig last Friday! Used my Way Huge Pork Loin and a GK 1001; had a real clanky, grindy tone, which was just what I was going for.

I ran across these pictures while searching for something else. Anybody recognize this model of bass? I'm thinking a 4000, but what model exactly? It doesn't look like a "standard" 4000, if there is such a thing.

    TB pinball enthusiasts?

Had my best game ever of Elvira "Scared Stiff" last night. Hardly a world-beating score - I didn't even make it on the leaderboard - but it's nice when you just casually decide to play and end up having one of those strangely effortless games.

    The Rickenbacker Club Part Twelve

I wanted to say thank you for giving me the confidence to do this! I've done some minor adjustments on other instruments I own, but I was a little intimidated by the Ric (dual truss rods? and it's the single most expensive instrument I own). But I read up on it, and raised the bridge a touch...

Got this '17 4003W in a trade the other day. It's noticeably lighter than my old Jetglo 4003 (which was an '05, I think) and I really like the feel of the neck. The action is super low, though. Anybody know a good tech for Rickenbacker setups in NYC?

    Thunderbird Club

Yes, please! It was actually listed as "used/excellent", but I would call it "used/mint", and honestly if it had been sold to me as a new instrument I wouldn't have questioned it. As you can see, the plastics are still on the pickguard and pickups, and the only marks on it are two very slight...

    Thunderbird Club

I already had a sunburst Thunderbird, but I always kind of craved a white one, and they seem to be one of the rarer "standard" colors, so when I had a little extra money and one popped up on the market, how could I say no? There's just something very classic about a white Tbird, IMO...

Not mine, just reposting for the community: a PJ-555 for sale for a good price, somewhat dinged up and with the usual round of hardware changes that most 555s seem to have gone through: ht tps://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2023236141372125/

My wife was a huge Kids in the Hall fan, so we've been rewatching all of the old episodes, and we actually got about halfway through the second season before I realized that the theme, "Having An Average Weekend", by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, features Thunderbird content! It's a...

That's what I always wondered. I didn't think they were cheap back then either! I love the look of Gaye (Black) Advert with her Ric back in the day - I would have said Lemmy bought it for her, but Lemmy probably didn't have any money then either... Oh yeah - my band's played with a couple...

    The Rickenbacker Club Part Twelve

"The Speedies onstage at Irving Plaza in New York in 1979. The group was one of a handful that led a late-night scene populated by high school students in the late 1970s and early 1980s." Based on a little detective work, I'm 99% sure that's John Carlucci. Here's another of the photos: "The...

    The Rickenbacker Club Part Twelve

To follow up on this: I wasn't super happy with the tone (just kind of blah, and low output) so first I experimented with raising the pickups, and that helped a bit. The other day I decided to go ahead and lower the bridge to where I was more happy with the action, and you know what? That...

What song did you learn the most from?

This is one I only just ran across the other day, but once I got into it I was really fascinated. I think it took me so long to discover the bass part of this song because I grew up hearing it on crappy little radios with no bass. And as somebody who's mainly into punk, hard rock, and heavy...

How do you tell if a Rickenbacker is Fake or Not??

I don't even consider myself very good at this game, but the binding going all the way around the bottom, and the weird shape of the pickguard (it's way too short) are screamingly obvious tells to me.

Well, you gotta be careful and make sure the hole is drilled deep enough first; you never want to try and be forcing a screw through undrilled wood. And I am a big fan of using a bit of beeswax on screws going into wood too. But that's the same advice I have for every project!

Damn, you've got a good eye. I went and looked at a whole bunch more pictures, and yeah, the frets look slightly different from most others out there. It wouldn't be terribly surprising for a 40-odd-year-old instrument with a lot of use to be refretted, of course.

    Considering a 1978 Rickenbacker 4001...

That's a good point, and something I definitely want to examine more. I will say, though, that from looking through a whole pile of pictures of other people's Ricks, that the bridge on the same instrument can seem to be in different places depending on angle and focal length of the photo, which...
