Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

It really does not. @agedhorse I would appreciate if you would add me to your "ignored" list so that you won't see my posts and respond to them. You and I don't see eye to eye.

Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I have been using this thing for noodling at home (in a case with the preamp) and it's fine and sounds good, but bulky. I was thinking a modern class D amp would be cheap, more powerful, and small -- but I'm starting to think @Giraffe is right. The prices...

Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

Thanks, I'm definitely a DIY'er, and this is for home use and small scale stuff, so those ICE units are a good lead for me. But I don't know if I'd agree they're crazy cheap. This is exactly what I did up to now with this amp, but the power amp is a little bit too underpowered and big (class A...

Looking for a fanless, small, cheap class D mono power amp

I have a preamp I like. I want to stuff it into a box with a small power amp -- not more than 500 watts and probably 300 is fine -- but I don't want a fan, so something small enough to have just a heatsink. I don't even know where to begin because it seems like there loads of things like this...

What does a bad capacitor sound like?

Yeah I miss radio shack for that. But there's not enough demand, even in big cities. To replace a tone cap, you have to order one from mouser and by the time you pay shipping, you're $15 in for a capacitor and waiting a week. :meh:

What does a bad capacitor sound like?

Yeah this has happened to me on very old instruments. Replaced a pot and soldered the crusty old tone pot capacitor back in, and it can make noise. But it's still more likely the pot if you haven't replaced that yet. They're five bucks and carry them at all guitar shops.

DiMarzio dp149 jazz pickups are ceramic + alnico 5. ?

Great - thanks for that. I might try to DIY one of that design. I really wonder why they decided to do this, and what the intended effect is. I listened to a bunch of samples of jazz bass pickups and these were favs, and then saw the unusual design.

DiMarzio dp149 jazz pickups are ceramic + alnico 5. ?

I understand from the description that these DiMarzio pickups use both ceramic AND alnico magnets. :bookworm: Does anyone happen to know how these pups are designed? Do they put a ceramic magnet underneath an alnico, and just generally, what the heck? I realize that they are split side by side...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

I like to get the the room, with a DPA omni. So maybe I will trade this amp for something with a big ol heatsink but also the tube pre, or maybe a newer GK; I guess I'm not the only one who is a fan of no fans.

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Thanks much, that's useful. Mine has a little bit of a vibration to it that makes it louder -- it's 20 years old -- so it's got to go and a new fan should help a lot. That's what I mean when I say it's quieter pointing down - on account of the vibration. But still, I guess even with your amount...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Sweet. If you do that pot, would be great if you could post pics of the process so others know how it goes and the part source. I wonder how much hassle it is (whether it's worth it) to get to the under side of that board. Pulled my 40 year old GK back out, and not sure this Ampeg is really...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Hey thanks man. Mine was the ST24A3. Glad to know that a new one will be quieter. Mine was pushing back, as in over the transformers/resistors, which is how it should be -- that or pushing straight down over them from the top also works :wacky::woot::wacky::woot::wacky:. If your fan was...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Thanks for looking. I opened up, cleaned and lubed the fan - 3o minutes of my time on earth that I won't get back - helped a little but not much. I also called Ampeg - the guy was nice but not especially helpful. Just gave me the part number of the direct replacement. He said he knows there are...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

So did you get the exact same fan as stock replacement from Ampeg, or a different fan? I think they have it on digikey or something. Some engineering genius on another board tested a few and posted their noise levels. As for the horse guy, I don't care if he's the head of NASA -- his posts are...

Yes, thanks I appreciate it - I was referring to the other guy, who responds to every technical post with self-serving, condescending, unhelpful and often wrong answers. Every internet board, whether it's talking about volkswagens, coding, or knitting cat sweaters has those guys in their 60s who...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Yeah I agree, on all that. Now, this is going to get me flamed, so retired amp engineers and the 'take it to a qualified technician' crowd, please just tune out now. But experimenting in there, I can't help but notice that the fan is a LOT quieter when mounted above the heatsink, pointing...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

 Mine the same; fan starts full speed then slows down to minimum. But it's too loud to use at low-ish volume -- I'm going to bring the GK back out, which has no fan and is dead quiet at idle. I'm sure the ampeg is fine at concert volume, but it's not even that powerful. For example...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Thanks, you're 100% right. I copped the amp last night and hadn't read up on it -- now I saw this thread that describes what you just said. I was just impatient, and now I find that it makes that crackling noise when the gain was moved for a good 15 seconds or so before settling down. But man...

Ampeg SVT 3 pro tube preamp section troubleshooting

Hello all -- I picked up an Ampeg svt 3 that was barely producing sound and followed @ejschultz fantastic instructions for biasing the amp in this thread; Mine was reading less than 1mv and I successfully biased it up to spec around 25mv. Amp sounds great but there is an issue with the tube...

    Did Fernandes ever make a plywood/laminate p-bass?

Ah, good to know! Then maybe it really is a Fernandes. I have one of their superb strat copies -- man it is nice. That one is solid alder and I think most of their p- and j- basses are too, but yeah this one sounds great anyway. It's not pine ply anyway because it's not that heavy, and body...

    Did Fernandes ever make a plywood/laminate p-bass?

I bought this "frankenbass" at auction cheap: it has a good, but trashed, Memphis maple neck and on the back, the neckplate says Fernandes. When I got it in the mail and opened it up, I was disappointed (not too disappointed, it was <$100) to see that it was a plywood or laminate layers body...

Anyone else notice how many guitars and basses are being sold from Japan?

Markets are not really cyclical in the way people wish they were. Real estate just goes up - except in times when nobody (except institutional investors) has money. As a proportion of incomes, it just goes up. Same goes for oil and many other commodities; it cycles with ability to pay. The...

Can we possibly iron out the BASS is easier than GUITAR thing?

Haven't read the whole thread but here's two cents: There are some kinds of music where bass is far more important than anything a guitarist could throw in -- I'm thinking about reggae, some pop, and a lot of electronic/dance music -- so the issue of bass being easier to play is kind of moot...

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

I mean, it looks great to me, but I'm a hardcore anti-snob. The worst thing in the world is a $10,000 PRS guitar.:vomit: You guys really ground me down about the stripping the finish thing, but if I did, I wouldn't expect much. I have another one in progress that I'm doing a French polish...

NBD - It's a dinosaur from the 80s, Peavey Dynabass.

That would be pretty wild to have five strings within a 1.5" (38mm) nut width wouldn't it? Why don't you try it and show us? Some people might actually dig that.

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

Yeah you're right and that was my initial thought sort of - strip and use the body and hardware. The Grover Titan tuners alone are awesome and go for $100 new. And the neck is straight and beautiful maple on the back. I'm actually playing the hell out of it. It's just that the whole thing is...

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

Ha!, I guess so. ;) My point of view is, I can work a dozen hours or more restoring or modding a beautiful instrument with my own hands to play and admire and show off.. if I sell it, what do I get? Maybe $200 profit? Can't even buy a Squier with that nowadays. Here's a guitar I bought on NYC...

Rate my Gear Acquisition Syndrome (G.A.S. fearer, beware!)

If you're going to buy so many cheap instruments, maybe get a little more esoteric? I see mostly Squiers here. How about some weird 1960s MIJ stuff, or some of those 1980s Soviet Union wedding band basses, etc? :roflmao: I have 10 guitars/basses in my house right now, some of them great...

That looks wicked good. Everything except the pink is what I was planning to do with a different cheapo build I'm working on in natural finish - the tort and chrome. Earlier today I was thinking about rounding off the headstock on this thing to look more fendery, but now I'm drinking the...

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

Oh man, not yet bro! If I do sell it, I gotta add some value to it and spruce it up - do the electronics and if I hang on to it I will probably refret it with stainless steel frets super-glued in - my favorite mod. I seriously expected to use it for parts. I took it apart as soon as I got it...

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

That's what I thought, and what I'm afraid of. I would feel like a real schmuck if I stripped it and it was crappy pine. So I'm starting to lean more toward the voice of the people, and just wet sand it back to glory and rock it. I just noticed that under bright light, it's actually a sparkly...

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

In hindsight, you're absolutely right. But I'm picking up the drift of public opinion here. Maybe I can convince myself it's a 1950s pastel, and would look great with that pearloid pickguard. My friends will die laughing if they see me with this bass, just because it's that out of character...

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

So bad, it's genius. :roflmao: Thanks, that's helpful. Was made in Incheon, Korea, March 1986 according to the serial number lookup. One problem is that the pink on the headstock is way faded (it's not on the body), but I can't sand it because of the logo.. Update here, I did "install a nut"...

You guys are making me feel guilty in advance for the mauling I'm going to do to this bass. I mean, it was $30. I think I'd have to get ten times that to be motivated to pack it up and schlep down to the post office and sell it.

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

I would like to know what lurks beneath the paint before stripping it. It's not plywood, but it's thick, lightweight, and a lighter shade than another alder body I stripped recently. I'm not finding this specific model on the google. Well "burgundy mist" or "salmon" is being charitable...

    NBD: 80s hair holdover

Keep the paint on the body, or the neck? You have a point there, in any case. I'm starting to think some metalhead might really like it refurbished. It's unusual because it's routed from the back and doesn't have pickguard screw holes. I thought the color was atrocious :vomit: and just bought it...
