Weird question. But I gotta know...

I'll add another vote for O'Keeffe's Working Hands. My hands get pretty beat up and dried out and this stuff works for me like nothing else I have ever tried. Good stuff...

    StingRay Encounters

Like others have said, I don't think you can go wrong. I've never played a bad one, even the SBMMs are pretty amazing, especially for the price. I picked up a SBMM Ray 5HH LE several months ago. I feel a little guilty having to admit that it has become my go-to and that the vintage Ric and my...

    Jeffrey Hammond... Underrated?

This one has always puzzled me as well. I'm a big Tull fan and have read all of the opinions that Hammond was somehow sub-par, but it certainly never was revealed in his playing! I always thought he was fantastic. As far as Tull bassists, John Glascock was my favorite, but none were "slouches"...

Secret for picking a band name.

A name doesn't really matter at this point, just pick something and get out there and play. If you have a bad show or the club doesn't like you for whatever reason, ditch that night's name and get a new one. If it all goes good and you start getting a good rep, then you stick with that name...

    Recomend me Fretless Players

Sticking to the OP's request for rock/pop fretless players, I would recommend the two Tonys: Tony Franklin has been mentioned several times and is one of my faves. One of my other favorites players is Tony Butler, who is probably best known for being the bassist for Big Country, but did a lot...

Facedown Bass Cab - good or bad idea?

When playing small venues (or even some larger ones) that have lousy sound systems (or sound men), I like to fire a cab at the back wall of the stage instead of the crowd. Obviously, this will vary with the particulars of the venue, but it can often achieve what I believe you are going for. The...

    Cats and basses

Our cat (Max) is completely ambivalent towards my basses. Well, unless I wake him up, in which case he can deliver a stink-eye that would melt glass. My buddies' cat however, loves my cases. Sometimes I have to actually pick him up so I can replace the offending instrument in his bed.

Okay, admit it; a bunch of y'all were scrolling through that website just hoping that none of your old band pics were featured there... Yeah, me too.

What’s the oddest bass part you’ve heard?

It may not be what you meant by odd Dave, in that it is more productionally odd than musically odd, but Lee Sklar's bass on Sussudio was pretty bizarre. Smushed completely flat and pushed way up in the front of the mix was pretty odd for a pop song bass line.

80s Albums Many of Us Have Never Heard But Are Worth Checking Out

I remember hearing "Kayleigh" and going out to find the album. Then going out to get the others! Marillion has been one of my favorites ever since. Pete Trewavas' bass work is awesome, BTW!

    Favorite bargain basses lately

Yeah, MMs nomenclature does kinda get confusing... This one is a Ray 5 HH limited addition Ruby Red Burst Satin... ...as far as I can tell! And it was "used". Originally purchased for a girlfriend who found it to be too big for her and returned it. It still had the plastic film on the PG...

    Single-Digit Club!

I've been playing since 1980 and have owned eight basses total, if memory is accurate. 1. Hand-me-down Woolworth/Penny's department store SG lookin' bass. Neck was so warped it could shoot arrows, but it was a start! 2. Another no-name, but the neck was straight on this one. Not a bad playing...

What's your approach to having more than one bass? Purely tone, or are there other reasons?

I currently have three basses, all do something a bit different, functionally, though I am not above buying something just because it looks cool. For example; I am semi-looking for a Danelectro longhorn, preferably in that horrible brown burst color they did. I am not aware of anything...

80s Albums Many of Us Have Never Heard But Are Worth Checking Out

Thanks for posting this one Eli! I just listened to it the other day. Being a Tull fan, I bought it right away when it was released and thought it was a great album. Ian Anderson had gone so many directions with Tull that it didn't surprise me at all that he would embrace the 80s synth/tech...

    Great Chuck Rainey Story!
