I used to use gauze pads on mine. Going back to flat strings completely cured them for me.

Has your guitar player already tried less drastic measures, including a long hiatus and applying for disability/Musicares/whatever else might be available? Rest and conservative medicine can help many. Those surgeries are no minor matter IMO.
