“Heavy Metal” Jazz?

This is probably a reach, but is there any type of harder versions of jazz?

Learning to be proficient at jazz is the best goal for me in my bass journey, but sometimes I have a lot of bent up frustrations and there aren’t many jazz tunes that let me release it, and it’ll normally take playing Tool or Metallica songs for a few days to shake it.

That's fine and all, but I also try to play metal songs note-for-note and would like something that would be a little less structured to allow me to improvise a bit more on...

Basically, I’m looking for jazz recordings/groups that have a faster and more energetic pace, with harder hitting rhythms.... Anyone know of anything like that?

Edit: and I don’t mean stuff like Jaco’s work, which while being more energetic and faster than jazz standards, it’s not really “hard hitting” enough.

Hmm, just thinking... Some King Crimson songs may fit the bill as some are more improvisational.

Would love to also find more metallic jazz, I don’t really know of any. There is some jazz influenced metal like Cynic (and other related from Sean Malone).

As a metal head who got into jazz, the ones I found I liked that tickled some of the same parts of my brain are:

Ok, pretty much everything by Stanley Clarke

That’s kinda how I regarded the earliest(well, post acoustic, anyway)version of Return To Forever, with Bill Connors...


But then, points of reference were different, as well as what ‘metal’ meant at the time.
What was heavy was the first Mahavushnu...


Fripp certainly took notice when he retooled Crimson in 1972. That version of the band is still an influence.
Then there’s alot of the stuff Allan Holdsworth was involved in...



...and of course...

Bill Laswell’s universe includes experimental work with Fred Frith, but more importantly, Sonny Sharrock..



Hopefully some of that comes close.

For whatever reason, I'm thinking guitarists that may usualky be labeled as Jazz...but doing something else. Guys like Holdsworth, Blood Ulmer, Derek Bailey, Sonny Sharrock, Christy Doran, etc.

This is from Arcana's 2nd album, Tony (RIP) Williams' final recording. Bill Laswell on bass with Buckethead.


Arcana's 1st album (with Derek Bailey) can be quite a heavy noiz-fest, too.

Some of the more complex Scandinavian metal bands may fit the original quest. I just finished a bass part to a song that was inspired by bands like this. It was very down tuned (F#) and to be fair, it was a part I wrote on the computer instead of played, but I gave the composer what he wanted.
