You know, I actually like the previous avatar better. I may update it again soon to just the Leaf, or the Mapleglo. I think there's too much in that little space.

So I sanded everything to 150 grit. I'll start on 220 tomorrow or Thursday, and then maybe I can start painting the body.

I'm happy with the close to final thickness of the resin coating on the fingerboard.

It looks like less than 1/8".

Fingerboard and body now sanded to 320 grit.

The fingerboard is taking on a milky sheen.

I think I'm done with the body. I may take a break from sanding the fingerboard, and spray on a coat or two of the red on the body tomorrow. Once that cures, I can start sanding the fingerboard with 400, and then wet sanding. The buffer should be in just about the time I'm done through 2000 grit.

It's a little "cranberry", but I think it's close enough. Apparently, I didn't sand enough either. I'm seeing the little imperfections that imperfect sanding leaves. I console myself by knowing that this is a former battle axe, and probably should even be distressed.

I'll throw another coat on there in a few minutes.

Probably would have been easiest to lay down the brighter red first and then mask the center to spray the rest darker.

I am hoping to avoid the thick white paste makeup stuff. Looking for powder type white/gray stuff. But I may have to go with the thicker stuff.

I saw this at work (where I do not log in due to security concerns) and thought about it. After a few minutes, I realized you are absolutely right. It'll be a lot easier to mask the body center, which is flatter, than the blade edges, which have complex curves. Slight change in plans - see below.

So based on the post by @Marcury, I'm changing the painting sequence. First, I attempted to better sand the rougher areas flat.

Then I masked off the neck, and sprayed on the brighter red to the body.

I'll spray on another coat in a few minutes. The back is still a little rough, but hey, what do you want for $100.

Working on a cutting jig to make the paint mask.

I also realized I want a black line between the two colors. That's just hurting my brain.

Well, I just masked it and painted. No pictures because I think I'm going to have to do it over, and figure out how to make the edges more even. I also am not sure that the difference in shading between the two reds is enough. Arrrggghh!

If I could get the line correct. I'm still struggling with working out a way to create the mask, and then correct placement on the body. I'll wait an hour or so and take a look at the most recent attempt.

The way you are doing it with the radius cutter and razor blade should work fine for both your fine black line and the other red color behind it. Spray the black, let it dry, mask it off again then spray the other shade of red.
