$100 Bass Challenge - Marceline's Axe Bass

Still having a little trouble with the cutting edge being clean, but I think I may just go with this.

I wish I was skilled enough to do a gradient from black to red. That looks pretty cool.

I actually like it like this.

If this were not a $100 challenge. and I was not just below budget, I might try some silver/gray in there.

On another note, I can see why great builders like JIO send their stuff out for professional finishing. It's definitely a whole other skill set, one that I have yet to master. There's no doubt I'm a total novice when it comes to finishing. That said, I sprayed on an attempt at a gradient.

Apparently at photography as well. I didn't notice the glare. Anyway, it's not near perfect, and clearly, my cutting board isn't cutting it (I crack myself up ) in slicing off nice, clean edges from the blue tape, but it is what it is. When this cures, I'll spray some clear over it, and finish up the fretboard. Once the challenge is over, if I don't sell it at Comicon, perhaps I'll have JIO's guy do the paint.

I think your amateur attempts look pretty damn good, I would be proud to play that bass live.
Not sure I could rock the whole outfit, but I would give it a go if necessary.
I think I could do the wig, maybe boots.
A lot really depends on the lighting, to be honest...

I gotta agree with wraub, it looks damn cool. Finishing is a learnable skill like everything else. I too, would be proud to play that axe, but the rest of the outfit would look kinda funny with my gray mustache.

Something that may help you on a future solid color build. Grab a high build automotive primer and build it up, and block sand it down to 400 grit until you have a perfectly level primer coat before you start spraying your color coats. A level base coat will always result in a better color coat.

Another tip is, you can hide all kinds of imperfections under a clear coat

From years of experience, I know for a fact that you are your toughest critic, and rightly so. But… for the $100 challenge - you are leagues out front!

I am 99.8% positive that any other Marcelines showing up at Comicon will be schlepping cardboard basses, or crudely cut plywood mock ups. Including a battery powered amp or not, this will Rule. My 10 year old son is an Adventure Time super fan, and he gives it his highest seal of coolness approval.

Yeah, all of the Marceline basses I've seen in years past have been either cardboard, plywood, and even a few blow-up plastic ones. I'm hoping I can be the first and only real Marceline bass playing vampire there this year.

Just requires a friend who knows how to do the rigging ala Peter Pan.
