Yeah, I had thought to do the black line first - I don't know why I didn't.

After seeing the two shades of red, I think they'll do. The radius cutter needs a little work - it's not cutting as cleanly as I had hoped. I bought a exacto knife blade, remade the cutting arm, drilled a hole the size of the exacto handle which worked better, but it still needs work. I guess I became impatient.

I'll let this fully cure, try to finalize the radius cutter, and work on painting the back lines, then the darker red blade edges.

Since you are emulating a cartoon, you could probably use a paint brush for the black and not mask it at all, I don't know how clean your trying to make this.

I'd seriously advise against doing it freehand. A journeyman sign painter yes - otherwise taping-off is the way to go. And even doing it that way, considering the curvature and compound angles will be tricky. I'd figure a way to draw a thin black (Sharpie) guide line(s) directly on the wings and tape to those lines. Actually you already have the red division for one tape line, so you need to create a second in the appropriate width. The black lines will help push the two reds further from each other visually so although they could have been a bit more different in value, it's looking good so far! :bassist:

You could go to an auto parts store and buy some vinyl pin striping tape. With a little patience and pulling the tape tight as you lay it down, you can follow your line almost perfectly. The only problem with that would be burying the tape in the clear so you can sand it level .

I thought about using a pin stripe. That may still be a possibility. I'll see how the new exacto blade setup works, and stop by the auto parts store tomorrow to see what they have. I don't have much room left in the budget...

The edge of the radius (center of the circle) for the blades are a few inches in from the edge of the opposite side. It would be a difficult jig to build. Had I realized what I'd be facing now, when I began the build, I might have just routed in a depression for those black separation lines. Live and learn.

That probably would have been pretty cool, but judging by everything you've done thus far I'm sure whatever you end up doing tomorrow will come out great.

I wish I was skilled enough to do a gradient from black to red. That looks pretty cool.

Now that you have this - tape off the line width and shoot/dust a light coat of the darker red letting the black show through.

Yeah, I have to let that cure 24 hours per the instructions. I may try to do a gradient first, just to see if I can, and I think it'll look pretty cool. Not entirely accurate, but I'm making it mine :)
