15" Driver's (1 x 15 Cabs)

Well, it depends on the specifics of the drivers (and cabinets) in question, and on what you're comparing about them. I would say that's a ballpark first approximation, but I'd suggest making any purchasing decisions based on more data than that.

For instance if you're comparing cone area, here are some numbers that might be of interest: typical 10" cone = 350 cm^2 (square centimeters); typical 12" cone = 520 cm^2; and typical 15" cone = 850 cm^2. Where did I come up with such esoterica? Eminence's website.

right, assuming that we're looking at surface area of a coplanar (2d, rather than the conical 3d of an actual cone) then roughly

area = pi x radius ^2

Radius of a 10" cone is 5"

Pi x 5 ^2 = 78.539 square inches

Radius of a 12" cone is 6"

Pi x 6 ^2 = 113.097 square inches

radius of a 15" cone is 7.5"

Pi x 7.5 ^2 = 176.714 square inches

hence in round figures, surface area of a
10" cone is 80 square inches
12" cone is 115 square inches
15" cone is 175 square inches

so 2x10 is roughly a 15
1x10 + 1x12 is roughly a 15

These are just rough figures, and dont take into account the convex shape of the cone, or the angle at which the cone becomes convex. many other variables take place such as mechanical excursions, building materials, and power...

my maths isn't as good as it should be, but i hope that helps. :smug:

I find my 15 goes deeper than my 10's....
But the tens have an upper mid presence missing in the 15, I have.
I do like the combo of both...........but not the weight and hassle of moving two cabs.
I would love a light one cab solution, that sits closer to my ear than just a 4x10 and still has the depth and punch of 10's and 15.
Something like the Triad or Traces new 15 and 210 combined look interesting

Surface area is only the first half of the equation.
The "Vd" spec is the one you need. This is the Volume Displacement, and tells how much air a given driver moves.

There is a mile of difference between 15" drivers.
More important, is if it is properly enclosed. Stuffing a driver into a box leads to poor bass performance. The box must be designed to properly match a given driver. There is no end of reading about this on TB.

My bass player is perfectly happy with a single JBL E140. He plays flats and likes the old school JBL tone. Other 15s don't have the high range of the E140 and sound totally different. Mostly dull, having no highs.

I have the new Trace 2x10 and 1x15. They sound really good, and I finally dialed in the GK to sound good with them. I feel like they break up a liitle bit compared to ampeg 6x10, but that's the only other cab I can compare them to besides an avatar neo 4x10. The avatar couldn't handle the power, The ampeg was too clean sounding. Trace is just perfect.

There isn't a single review on the whole net that reviews the new Trace cabs, I've searched plenty.
