4 samples, 4 different cabs. tell me what kind of speakers are in each.

btw, this game is for people who believe speaker size matters only. if you're not one of them, please sit this one out. you may, however, play on your own ;)

Thanks. I appreciate the effort. That's not what I asked for but I'll give it a shot. One thing that you can't transmit though is the sound pressure on your ears as you play through an amp. That's an important factor. I've never played through an 18", just so you know. Are these single driver cabs? I never said only size matters, just that it matters.

They're all 10"s.
is that your final answer? even if it's not, i'm going to tell you that you're wrong ;)

1 is a prototype of an audiokinesis cab with 212's and a mid horn.

2 is a B-15 double baffle cab from 1964 with a single 15".

3 is a markbass mini cmd121p combo with a 12" and a tweeter.

4 is an old tube works 410t from about 1989.

I have used just an 18 with active basses on new music with no problem. See avatar - but I need renew supporting membership. The Cerwin Vega 18s have no trouble with 16th notes - not sure how often we get to 32nd notes. But the cab seems as fast as my 6x10.

Weapon of choice for me is the 301 with the I88 and 4 ohm. They have a brighter sound than the middy I87 in 8 ohm. Surprisingly bright actually.

Yeesh...you Talk Bassers is tough!
do you want to be mollycoddled or do you want facts? me, i prefer facts, even if it changes long-held perceptions i used to have. i used to believe that speaker size mattered as well, but the fact is that other than beaming, it really doesn't. i may not share all the same tastes in cabs as guys like bill, but the guy's info is 100% factual and i've yet to be able to prove he's wrong about anything he says on a technical level, and believe me, i used to look for it.

At the risk of going completely off topic, here's something I've been wanting to ask -

If speaker size is irrelevant, why aren't we all playing through 4x4s?

My point is that speaker size does matter. It may not be the most important factor, but there is a point of impossible returns just as an 18 may be beyond the point of diminishing returns.

Is it the mp3 compression showing, or were those done with a POD/some sort of amp sim?

Edit, Bah, not checking to read new posts before going 'oh, my reply didn't post'.

back in the late 70's,i used play thru four Bose 800 cabs (thirty-two 5's) and it sounded great with a 1000 watt power amp.

Uh oh blind test....i like blind tests, they tend to destroy egos and turn everyones believes false.

I guess its to late to say what i thought about the sound files since you told us what they are.

For the most part at first listen they all sound the same....but 1,2 sounded similar and 3 and 4 sounded like a similar size driver in different combination's. the only one that had a slight difference in sound was 4 it sounded like a pair or quad of 10's with no tweeter

My original guess after further listening was 1,2 where 12" paired drivers with a tweeter, 3 i thought sounded like a single driver and it sounded like a low quality 15, 4 sounded like a 2 or 4x10 with no tweeter.

again they all sounded the same, but at first listen i think the only ones that really stood out a little bit. Was 1 had better high end and 3 had a weird mid drop, which made me think it was a low quality 15.
