1964 Jazz Bass restoration

Beautiful work! I am now very envious. 1964 is the year I was born, so I have always wants one from that year.
The only 64 J for sale near me is priced at $8K and is in very poor condition with the clay dots drilled out and drilled holes in the headstock where some moron had put rhinestones on it back in the 70s.

Every time I see a John K restoration thread, it really makes me want to track down an old, beat up J to get him to restore for me. I guess I'll have to keep saving up.

Any reason why your shooting the burst by the neck plate like a 70's fender? Minor, but I know that would bug me if it was my bass.

I've seen mid 60's fenders done both ways. I suppose that it depends on which painter at fender shot it at the time. I have a '66 here that was done the way that I shot this one and I just used it as a guide.

Not to derail, but did the '64 jazz have the strap button on the headstock like that? I have a CS NOS 64 jazz and it does not have one. Perhaps left off to leave room for the CS logo?

yep, '64's had the hootenanny button.

I think that's exactly why the CS '64 doesn't have the button, but the originals all did from about '60 up to until about '68/69. I wouldn't mind if the CS did put a button the the HS, and moved the logo somewhere else, like the base of the neck or something.

just looks wrong on a 64 clay dot l series bass though. its a very cbs era sunburst trait. the coloring looks fantastic though.

Correct. Just like the originals.
There was no reason to 'waste' paint in a large spot no one would see since it's covered by the pickguard.

well, I've seen them both ways, so whatever floats your boat
on this one under the neck plate, this one's original finish was all black so I just shot it that way. and once the neck plate is on it, it actually looks the same as most of the earlier ones since the outer black burst is fairly thin.

im talking about the swoop up into the neck plate area. ive never seen that era of bass not have the burst swoop up into the neck plate. the cbs bursts up into the fullerton reissues do that straight line deal under the neck plate. being as era correct as you are im just kind of surprised to not see that on your burst refins.
