I Believe it is a late 81' but I can't find another one like it. It is a hog with a maple neck. Is there a way to tell if it is an 81' or early 82'? #b008218 . Any information about this instrument would be great.

Rosewood? Seems unsual for an '81 as I believe the standard "dark" fretboard for these were ebony, while rosewood was introduced in '82/'83. Can you post a pic?

My L2K (Serial #B007726) has the black crinke bridge and control plate, slot head polepieces. Its a rosewood/ northern ash tone/ back monster (10 lbs, 13 oz). It has late 81 and early 82 dates on the body & neck (I've had her since 85).

Then I'm guessing mine must be an 82' but I guess there's no way to tell without talking the bass apart. What amp do you recommend?

They switched from ebony to rosewood early without telling dealers on advance. They just started showing up with rosewood boards. We were a very very early G&L dealer- our first dealer lit included an active L-1000 (which of course was never produced ), and all instrument (four of them, two guitars and two basses) were available with ebony or maple boards. Great basses, I liked the guitars a lot ( but I love Jazzmasters and their quirky electronics too), but Hyatt made them an abysmal company to work with.
