1x15" cab needed

what about the aguilar sl115?

SL Series Cabinets

If weight isn't a huge concern ,the DB115 may be more your style tone-wise.

They also just announced (yesterday) limited edition cololrs. Looks like there is a white and black that would match your head nicely. The default color is black and silver.

Thanks for this. I will research these Agies further,

ANY FEELING ABOUT BAG END?

I have very strong feelings about Bag End... mostly GAS feelings. I really want a pair of the 15s in oiled birch.

What about a GreenBoy cab? He has a "15/6 tube" model that is wide, and there are some custom builders that would probably do custom tolex / style. The Greenboy Bassic 15 is 24" tall, but that can be wide if you put the feet on the other side. There are a few builders out there doing his stuff.

There is a guy here in Houston, Jake, at Steamboat Ampworks that does custom stuff. No idea where you are... Anyway, he's currently building a 60w B15 style head for me. He does a lot of very cool custom stuff. Far out tolex colors and such. I was in a few months back, and he was building a bass amp for a dude in Australia.

That's interesting. I'll look him up. On the Bag End, the only thing negative I've noticed is I don't don't think they go super low. Maybe more mid-focused. I'm looking for deep harmonic resonance in a cab. Crisp high-end articulation takes a back seat for me.

The Bag End cubes are very mid-focused... there is another Bag End model that is wider and goes deeper. Model S15L - 22"wide. If you are interested in Bag End you should msg with @57pbass - he has all the Bag End cabs, including one of the wider models.

The Bag End cabs are neutral sounding IMHO. The overall cabinet size is on the smaller shallower side when compared to some of the other brands out there.
When you hear them soloed they’re not bass heavy .. but I have used these cabs on countless occasions and have never had a problem dialing in the bottom end I needed. I have the Nebula finished versions since I move them so often. I love the birch but it scratches easily.

I also use the MESA Subway 115 cabs and they are slightly larger and lighter than the Bag Ends and they sound very different but amazing.
I alternate between the two throughout the year and never have a problem.

See if you can find an TL606 cab to audition in person. The driver is an EV 15L, which has an old school vibe that really complements a B15 head. These cabs enjoy a cult like status because they have a unique lower midrange tone which has never really been duplicated in a modern speaker.

The trade off is that they won't put out any real volume below about 60 Hz, and will fart out if you try to force it.

They're also a bit heavier than the 40 lbs that you want, but weight will depend on who built it. You can usually find them for way, way cheaper than a modern neo cab.

When I spoke with David at Revsound this week, I told him the 115 was a couple of inches narrower than the head, and gave him the opportunity to say he could build that, but I think he's super busy already, and doesn't really want to change the design for one cab. He pre-cuts his plywood for his current models, so starting from scratch is probably unsavory. I will reach out to LDS to get their opinion. Some of the makers, like VBoutique, Schroeder, and others meet the size criteria with their current model, but the Schroeder for instance, is far from the aesthetic I'm hoping for.
I think that the other, perhaps primary, reason that David @ RevSound and others wouldn't modify their cabs to accommodate a wider design footprint is that they spend a lot of time designing the enclosure dimensions, ports, etc to make the most of the driver(s) being used. I know that when I bought a RevSound 115, it was the first build of a V2 and David spent weeks fine-tuning the design until he was satisfied with the result. I'm no designer, but I would think that if he or anyone simply added a few inches on each side, it would change the audio response significantly.

That'd be a deal-breaker for me.

There might be quite a few single-15 cabs that'd work. Driver matters, of course. My first thought would be a JBL D140/K140; sensitive, good frequency response for a 15. Doesn't take a lot of power, but your amp is low-power. And Ampeg used them. Eminence 3015 and Faital 15PR400 are modern lighter alternatives, though overkill, power-wise.

I'm skeptical that a traditional 3/4" plywood box can get under your 40lb weight limit, unless it's undersized (less bass).
A little over an inch on either side? That would be way way down on my First World Problems list.

Indeed I agree. The interior volume could stay the same by making it slightly shallower or shorter, but that's messing with a lot of calcs. The custom cab makers however, do this for a living. Just a different business. I guess Revsound is now a mainstream, non-custom shop, other than aesthetic choices..Good for them. I like success stories.

I would like to ask you about low bass frequency extension in David's 115. I'm looking for big, bloomy low end, where when I EQ at the lowest frequencies, the cab responds. I would like this cab to do what no 112 or 210 could do given a reasonably portable cab design. I'm looking for an old-school thump, even at the expense of some crispness and presence at higher freqs. Not unbalanced of course, but leaning into the low harmonic resonance that the right cab and speaker can deliver from my P bass with flats. Can the Revsound go there? If I can't find a 115 that has the ability to deliver those warm, round, creamy lows, I might as well keep my BB2, who's 12 is remarkable, but not old-school. I want it all!!! LOL

Early on in Barefaced life they made a 115 cab called a Compact. I haven't been able to find one, but by all accounts it would be a good candidate for what I'm looking for. Must not have been in much demand as Alex seems to have completely abandoned the 15" driver.

what about the aguilar sl115?...

I think this is the best suggestion so far. The OP's amp picture doesn't display inline, so here it is in jpeg format:

The SL115 ticks a few boxes: Single neo 15 (no tweet), weighs 34lbs. Based on the 400w power rating and the availability of 4 and 8 ohm versions, I'd guess the driver is a version of the Faital 15PR400. And, the grill style of the Aguilar SL115 is already a decent style match to this head. With customization of the grill, it could be much closer.

I agree. There are compelling reasons it is good match. Also, it is wide enough to accommodate the head neatly. Only question for me is its ability to go low, round and warm. Seems like a small volume cab. Anyone? Can it go old-school thump?

Good question - I just sold my 15, because for what I do I actually preferred the 12 (I also bought a second 12 to pair with it). I had the 15 for about 6 months, and used it both by itself and paired with a 112. By itself, it was big and deep, but not at all flabby. It was very responsive and quick, also very efficient (not needing much power to get loud - although it could take a lot). Paired with the 112 is where it really shone. It added another layer of "deep" to my sound. Ultimately I found that I really only needed one cabinet, and the 112 was smaller and I preferred its overall sound (but just by a hair). I don't really NEED 2 cabs, but 2 is always better and bigger sounding than one, in my experience :D. Hope this helps. I should add that over time, I have owned two LDS cabs and both were excellent. One was a 15/6 (massive beast that could move concrete walls) and the other was a little 12/6 that I kinda wish that I still had. Neither was a custom design - both were based on the Fearless model - so I do not know how his custom cabs perform. But he is an excellent builder.

Not to get off-topic, but they've got this 8x10 for $699.99, and it's everything I can do to resist calling and finding out what shipping would be.

Edit: these might not actually in stock; still a killer price, tho. :)

Don hasn't updated his site in at least 15 years (maybe cross country move) so I wouldn't go by what you find in the cabs section for the price.

Hi Y'all.
Decided I should show you my amp head based on the B-15 circuit. Perhaps it will inspire more cab ideas. Yes, I know there is a matching 1x15" cab, but in fact, I have not been able to find anywhere on earth. Only about 20 of these amps were made, and most of them live in studios, who preferred it to their B-15's for recording. Crazy huh? LOL

What is it you want the cabinet to look like?

Have you heard any brand of cabinets that offers the tone goals you are looking for that would give us a direction?

My experience with bass cans is limited to Barefaced. I have two. Both 12’s. Fantastic, but a tad modern sounding and squeaky clean. His more vintage offerings are with 10’s. I want a 15.
From research the Revsound sounds promising, as well as the LDS. However the Agie looks pretty good aesthetically, and I need to do more research on the tone, and whether it goes old-school, round, warm thump.

Why not a cab from 65 amps?
-------
1 x 15 Cabinet

This is the cabinet for the Apollo bass head. The cabinet is a very punchy, tight, and full sounding 1x15 with a special Celestion bass speaker. Celestion has done a fantastic job with the speaker and really makes this little amp sound big! The cab is from 11ply Baltic Birch again with ½" blind dovetail joints built to the same ultra-high standard as 65 Amps' guitar cabs! It’s compact, light and extremely rugged. Frontpanel can be removed. Side handles.

Speaker: Custom Celestion BL15-400x
Power: 400 Watts
Dimensions: 23" W x 17.75" D x 23.75" H
Weight: 66 lbs
