1x15 combo + 4x10 or head +4x10?

I currently have a 400w @4 ohm yorkville bm400h head running through an 8 ohm 600w ashdown abm410h (so I have around 300w @8 ohms) and I am looking to get more power/volume/loudness.

I really like the peavey tour series so I am trying to decide between the tnt115 combo and the tour 700 head. I will be running it with my ashdown 410.

Both have relatively similar features, but are differentiated mostly by power ratings. As far as I can see:
-The tnt combo (rated at 600w peak) running into my 410 will put out it's full 300 rms watts @ 4 ohms (I've also an it rated 425w @4 ohms) and has the added loudness of the 15"speaker.
-the tour 700 on the other hand will put out 500w @ 8 ohms when running through my 410 and leaves me with done headroom and the option to add a cab at a later time.

The tour 700 is $10 cheaper so price is not a factor

Which setup do you think will give me more volume/loudness and which would you choose? (I play mostly metal btw)

Out of the two options, I'd upgrade the head. Or you could just add another 4x10 and keep the Yorkville. I had the same head; thought it just sounded ok at 8ohms, but paired with a 4ohm cab or a pair of 8ohm cabs, made a pretty big difference.


And there's a lot of opinion on here that a 4x10 stacked with a 1x15 isn't ideal, because the 4x10 basically will overpower the 1x15.

I should think. I run a 2X10 ext with a 1 15" and its balances nicely. Nevertheless, the 15" will make it more "round". You really need to check it out. Forget about other people's opinions and just run that rig and see how you like it.

Back in the day I ran an 8 ohm Traynor 6x10" off a Peavy Combo 300. Big bottom and punch. Nice.

I'd also just add another 8 ohm 410 to the rig you have. That'll make a HUGE difference. Volume is achieved with speakers, not wattage.

Never considered the possibility of adding the cab... Not a bad idea however for the foreseeable future I will not have the cash to buy a new cab straight up. Upgrading the head would only cost me about $200 assuming I sell the yorkville.

Well then adding the 1x15 will most likely give you more loudness vs. upgrading the head, and will make a big difference having one cab now stacked ear level to you.

Are you looking at buying the Peavey stuff new? Maybe you could find a used Ashdown 4x10 for the same $$ as the Peavey combo? Just an idea...

Head + cab. Get another 4x10 later. Maybe even a 8x10. That's how you make some thunder.

Alright, I'm leaning towards the head for the future expansion possibility. Even though adding a combo would likely give me more loudness right now.
I don't really NEED more loudness yet... I'm upgrading more for the added features a new head our combo has over my current head.
Loudness and power are just things you always want to have more of.

+1, and combo 1x15s tend to have even less output capability than separate 1x15s as the internal cab volumes are usually smaller. As others have noted watts aren't what get you loud, better speakers and more of them are.
