I must have heard that before, and got confused with the DB659 or DB680 thinking the SA200 was based off these designs.

You're obviously talking about the on-board pre.

Back when you could get a Major for $500-800 I had a very knowledgeable tech talk about how the design of a Major was such a gnarlything to maintain so I am sure if they are $3000 you could justify building one on your own.(but wow $1500 tempting...)
I once recorded with a superbass that had girlschool stenciled on the back I've been dreamin'....that was an awesome grind.

Not to dispute what you're saying (never played either the Aggy or Sadowsky), but I've been reading recent threads where teh SA200 gets compared more to the Reeves head, and the two seem to be quite similar tonally. Tom Bowlus also recently shared some unscientific tone comparison videos of an Ampeg VR, Orange AD200B (and a Terror Bass for fun), Sadowsky SA200, and the Reeves 225... needless to say, everyone agreed the SA200 and 225 were waaaay more on the clean side of things than the other heads, and those two in particular sounded eerily similar.

That's really interesting.

I've A:B'ed the Aggie DB-359 and the Reeves 225 in the same room, same cabs, same bass... The Reeves was a hint louder for sure, and sounded more... "live" more "brilliant" more "open" than the Aggie if that makes any sense... more "brilliant" is the best way I can describe it.

The DB359 seemed to have more of a "round" sound in the middle, while the Reeves totally nails the Hiwatt, Entwhistle 'KerrRRAAANG" tone. (Thanks Edbass for the spelling of "KerrRRAAANG") If the Aggie is a cornet, the Reeves is a trumpet.

But in terms of clean vs. dirty, the Aggie and the Reeves are both crazy clean. Both are very hifi and refuse to break into power-tube distortion until the last possible moment.

If the SA200 and the Reeves sound the same, then I'm suddenly interested a bit more in the SA200, but I'd pick the Reeves over the Sadowsky every time because it's cheaper, (hard to believe the Reeves is cheaper than anything), and the Reeves looks 100 times cooler.

The SA200 looks like my mom's stereo from the 70's. The Reeves looks like an amp from the 70's.

you know, i was shocked at how much i really liked that orange ad200b in that test. back in the 70's and 80's, i thought orange made the worst amps ever. nowadays...not bad at all.

The only thing that's preventing me from grabbing a AD200B is the fact that the tube sockets are soldered into the PCB. Especially since I like to drive my output tubes to grilled-cheese-cooking temperatures. If I played bass like a regular person, then I could probably be OK with the Orange.
