2013-2014 NHL Regular Season Thread

I'm not a fan of Letang. Past his prime me thinks. Perhaps he needs a change of scenery. Do it elsewhere.

Re: Flyers @ Penguins game. From my house it seem like Pittsburgh got beat by Ray Emery moreso than getting beat by the Flyers. I would definitely agree that the Flyers looked average from a gameplay standpoint. They just managed to capitalize on their chances, and Emery stood on his head. I thought for sure those short side looks that the Pens got in the dying seconds of the 1st period were goals; but Razor managed to keep them out from behind him.

I think Bylsma underestimated Berube. Seemed like after that goal 19 seconds in was disallowed,...Berube readjusted his strategy to effectively negate the Penguins speed. The Penguins surprised me with how fast they came out of the gate but the Flyers managed to switch gears and clog up the NZ. Not my favorite brand of hockey but it got the Flyers a win.

The Cooter/Malkin rivalry is reason enough to keep Coots a Flyer for a long time to come IMO. I'm much entertained by it.

No defense in the NHL Thursday night. A couple seven goal games, including a big performance (four goals) from every Bruin fans favorite former player, Tyler Seguin. Six points from Benn in that game too.

Speaking of the Bruins, I watched the Columbus game Thursday night. The Bruins looked good, at least I thought so.

Versteeg is back in Chicago after a trade with Florida.

While I'm thrilled with the goal Lucic made in OT last night to win the game for Boston, it was a poor choice for the Columbus player to make that shot from the blue line.

I believe the Bruins got 9 points from the recent home stand. Top Notch.

Agreed. Couts is so in Malkin's head! That kid is sought after by every team in the league. I wonder when Holmgren will trade him for a washed up retiree?

Please don't do anything Holmgren like. PLEASE.

I'm still really not that jazzed on Strieght. He's had one strong game but seems to be really doggin it out there. I'm hoping it's just a new team chemistry issue that get resolved through out the season.

That turn around play that led to the turnover that led to the penalty that everyone is giving Giroux crap about (Hey it negated a potential scoring chance; good defensive maneuver G. Maybe a little cheap but what player doesn't do that from time to time) was ugly. You got two checkers on you and you are that close to the boards and you try a spinarama. Go for the easy play. Get rid of the puck instead of getting cute. Hell play it down to your goaltender if you have to.

Am I reading that correctly that Kadri got three games for the hit to Backstrom, which wasn't penalized, and not for the later hit to Granlund, which resulted in a match penalty?

Yeah, he should have been suspended for the 2nd hit as well. It was equally as obvious.

It sounds like the Leafs went into the game knowing they were out-skilled by the Wild so they decided to try and make it a chippy game. They stole the previous game from the Wild and they knew it.

The Wild look pretty darn good so far. Too bad both Backstrom and Harding are out for tonight.

Haha I dig it, but I will also laugh my head off when I tries to hop up there and falls backwards onto the ice.

I have to get home to see the video of him hopping up there, but he's been doing it a while from the story. Him pointing at the scoreboard as the Wings were celebrating their goal with seconds left was pretty awesome. "Go ahead and celebrate you broke my shutout, we still won."

Flyers let one slip away tonight. Had a 2-1 lead until fairly late when Bufuglien scored his 2nd of the game to tie it. Went to a shootout. Segaguchi (sp.??) beat Mason on the Jets first shot. Giroux answers in the 2nd round to tie it. Goes to the 4th or 5th round before the Jets score their 2nd in the shootout. Berube sends out Timonen, who fails to score. Jets win.

My question is, why send out Timonen in the shootout?! He still had Voracek, Simmonds, Hartnell, and other forwards. I would have definitely had Voracek out there before Timonen. Oh well, at least it was one point.

Pretty loose game in Pittsburgh last night. Nice to see the Pens put some pucks in the net. Obviously Rinne was out, but Pens also played a pretty solid defensive game.

Pretty sickening moment though. Glass had a great clean body check on Nystrom and then Nystrom went after him. I don't know if he took exception to the hit, was just trying to fire his team up, or what. But Glass isn't the guy you want to fight. After a few blows were exchanged, Nystrom has hit brow split open and then got KOd by a aglass haymaker. Yeah, Nystrom got what he asked for, and arguably what he deserved for instigating a fight because of a clean hit, but seeing him try to skate on his own while his legs look like spaghetti and three people hold him up is something I could really do without in today's NHL.

For the Flyers only getting one point out of the game I was still thoroughly entertained. Defensive game. Some good goaltending. Teams pretty evenly matched; once it started to get rolling.

I wonder what Simmer was giving Wheeler crap for in the 2nd (IIRC). Wheeler drew a penalty on Coots. They only showed one replay of the penalty and it looked like a dive. I could be mistaken. Perhaps that's what Simmer was giving Wheeler and ear lashing over?

This is great stuff. More goalies need to have this type of attitude:

His bit against the Wings (follow the link from original article and then the gif link) is great too!

He's just gotta expand the act a bit.

My understanding of his "on the net" bit is that he is trolling the refs taking so long to drop the puck more than he is trying to troll the other team. In that case, there was like 5 seconds left of a 7-3 game and everyone was just standing around...
