I'll be honest. This team (moreso some life struggles) had me in a funk. Luckily I got an awesome wife who shows me the way to not take life so seriously and pick me up when I fall down.

Gives Emery a chance to contribute as well. If he gets the win that ups his confidence and that of the teams.
Probably my only real complaint about that game was Luke Schenn. After being a healthy scratch for several games, he looks like he's lost his confidence. Almost every move or pass he made seemed tentative. Hopefully, he'll get back into the groove. Glad to see Voracek get going again.
I'll take a 1-0 Pens win, but I'm nervous about tonight. I was just talking to my cousin who lives in PIT last week how we feel the same you do, the Pens don't seem to be forcing their will on teams. Maybe it's the injuries.

Injuries are a big key to it I think. Aside from the first line, there's been zero consistency to the lineup the entire season. At one point Malkin was playing with two wingers who would get laughed off the third line on most clubs. I think they just need a few more games to settle back in.
RE: Luke Schenn. He seemed inconsistent. He'd made a few good plays but he was doggin it on most others. So I'm with you there.
They are also still a little too hesitant with shots. Those times on odd man rushes where they need to shoot from the offensive zone faceoff dot cause they've got a teammate playing the rush perfectly for the rebound to the other side (best pass in hockey); but instead they try a pass that gets sticked away in the slot (giggity).
Ditto on shots from the point. But perhaps they are seeing something that we can't as spectators. Hopefully with that B.Schenn redirect tickling the twine; which Vinny let go from the top of the circle, they'll start taking that shot more often.
Nice to see them start getting traffic in front of the net as well.
A+ for Scoracek. I can't believe they managed to get two wrap arounds past Anderson.
Holy crap! 2-1 Flyers win! Mason could have done no better in net than Emery did tonight, especially in that first period. Emery's gotta get the 1st star tonight.
Flyers now 6-3-1 over their last 10 with the win tonight. WOW! Maybe the corner has been turned finally?
Interesting goings on in the Metropolitan Division (there, I used that ridiculous name). The Rangers started badly and the Flyers started horribly, but both have turned things around a fair bit and the Pens have slowed their winning pace, so it could be an interesting division to watch.
Meanwhile, I'm still trying to decide if the Bruins have put things back together and I'm thinking maybe...

One thing I've noticed when the Pens play the Flyers. Malkin clearly gets frustrated. I'm not sure why. He's one of the best players in the world. My theory is that it goes back to that playoff series when Couturier did a good job on him defensively. I think Malkin got sick of hearing that, and gets a little overly wired when playing the Flyers.
Don't get me wrong - I'd love to have him on my team. He's excellent. But it's kind of like he loses his mind a bit when Couturier is on the ice. Did you see him mugging Couturier in the corner on that one play? Conversely, Crosby doesn't seem to get frustrated (other than that series 2 years ago). He just plays his always-outstanding game. Malkin seems to turn into a raging bull against the Flyers...
All in all, this was a fun game to watch. Virtually all fast-paced hockey without any real cheap shots.

That was the worst I've ever seen the Pens play in person. Seemed like an overall lack of effort from the top down. Funny thing is they still had a hundred scoring chances, just couldn't put the puck in the net.
To me the flyers didn't look like anything more than a mediocre team. I'll be surprised if they make the playoffs, but there's lots of time left. I'm kind of glad the pens are struggling a bit now instead of just breezing through to the playoffs. Really getting sick of Letang though. I hope the Pens dump him before his extension kicks in.

Sean Couturier is to Evgenii Malkin and Sidney Crosby what Chris Therien used to be to Jagr. Kryptonite. He just quietly shuts those two down while he's on the ice. He really gets under Malkin's skin and just doesn't let either of them get great scoring opportunities (unless they're both on the ice at the same time as in the PP).
What was amazing about the game last night was the coaching. Berube kept the matchups going last night to keep the advantage for the Flyers and Bylsma just kept rolling the lines and didn't adjust at all.

Any thoughts on the buffalo firings, esp from any Sabre fans on the thread? I think it is a step in the right direction for the club.
Very astute observation. Three losses in a row has the fan base calling for Bylsma to shake up the lines.
Then take him! He's certainly worth the $3.5 he's being paid this year, but not the $7.25 he'll be making next year.
Actually Malkin did take a dumb penalty... it just didn't get called. He grabbed Couts's jersey, head, helmet strap and threw him down... no call.
That ugly bastard gets away with more crap than anybody in the league.
