2013-2014 NHL Regular Season Thread

Maybe it was the inexperience of the Oilers, but last night the Pens looked really impressive to me. I felt like the owned the game and played like they did in 2009 on both ends of the ice. The Oilers made a few runs, but the Pens seemed to match the intensity.

Pens are having loads of success with the left wing lock, and I love all the odd rushes it is creating. Plus they've really established some lock down defense. I think they maybe gave up like 3 shots the rest of the game after they took the lead in the 3rd?

That said, their schedule has been a pretty big softball so far. Have Philly, Vancouver and Colorado next. Philly Pittsburgh is always a good matchup, regardless of how the teams are doing. Colorado Pittsburgh is a must watch for a hockey fan imo! Should be a good one.

I saw some interview with Bylsma talking about Scuds, and he said when Scuderi arrived at camp this year, he asked Bylsma if his role in the system would still be the same as it was last time. Bylsma asked him what he thought that role was. Scuderi said first, play defense. Second, play defense. Third, play defense. Bylsma says yes, that's perfect. :D

Nice win by San Jose over St. Louis to knock another unbeaten team off the list. Now it's down to San Jose and Colorado. I wonder what will happen to Maxim Lapierre after his hit on Dan Boyle sent Boyle off the ice on a stretcher.

It would be nice to see Iginla get his game in gear.

Yeah, at this rate we'll be in the running for the first overall pick in the next draft. Is there one particular front-runner out there (ala Crosby, Lemieux, Gretsky, etc.); or is everybody on the horizon fairly average?

Flyers actually played a pretty good game for most of the time, but they just can't put the biscuit into the basket. I'm sure they're thinking too much about it and gripping their sticks a bit too tightly. But it's sad to see...

Yeah, Flyers did not play a bad game. They created lots of chances but just couldn't score. They really got some momentum going there in the beginning of the third, but I was relieved to see that instead of pulling a trick from the 2012 playoffs playbook and taking 13 more penalties, the Pens managed to settle down and regain control of the game.

Crosby is playing on another level right now. Absolutely incredible to watch. I know a lot of people still don't like him because he was a whiny teenager shoved into the spotlight, but he has really matured and deserves to be the current face of the league. If he manages to stay relatively healthy through his career, he's going to leave behind one hell of a legacy.

I thought the Pens were fortunate to get out of Philly with the win. The Flyers made the Pens earn that victory. There were a few misses or bouncing pucks that have been going Philly's way in this series recently, that went the Pens way in this game. That was my first full game look at the Flyers, and I don't they are all that bad of a team. I thought Mason and Fleury played great in stretches of the game to keep their team in it.

As for the rest of the league, the last two unbeatens go down. No 82-0 teams this year after all.

Unfortunately for the Flyers, however, that has been a consistent problem this season. They have just 11 goals in 8 games and have not yet scored more than two goals in any game. You're not going to win a lot of games in the NHL when you're only scoring 1.375 goals per game.

I saw that goal, but then missed a lot of the game as I was flipping between the B's and the Sox.

The B's were fortunate to get the late goal to take the win - otherwise they would have had overtime after giving up a 2 goal lead with the possibility of only getting 1 point. It was a classic "win that the coaches were not particularly pleased with."
