All the V4B love on Talkbass lately had me showing this little rig a bit of love tonight. Damn fine sounds coming out of this thing!

Very difficult to beat what's in the pic for fantastic bass tone. Four TIs on the Pbass maybe?

I guess if you like TI's, that would be true I know those who use TI's love them like religion, though, so I'll be nice.

Thanks for being nice Jimmy! I was afraid I might really get burned for throwing in the TI part from other string users, and for the Pbass part from Jbass devotees.

I have TIs on my '58 and it's incredible. But then again, I honestly haven't found a string that doesn't sound good on that bass. After playing it I wonder why I ever grab another bass!

Yeah - I love everything about that bass. Perfect match with the amp too.

most of the 70's i used a 72 pbass with a V4B and squareback. still the best sound. and that is 140 basses and probably 25 amps later.

So sorry for the confusion gentlemen! Yes, that's a common abbreviation for Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats.

These are the Jamerson strings: La Bella Original 1954 Style Stainless Steel Flat Wound 0760M, there is a lighter gauge set as well.

(I use Elixirs nano web strings myself, but maybe someday I'll try a T.I. JF344 set).
A bit off topic now, let's get back to the beautiful V4B!

I love the tones I get out of the V4B but like most others it would be great to get a little more head room. I like a very clean tone and don't like having to crank up the gain and master to get enough power and have to flirt with distortion. I have also resorted to using my Fender Elite in active mode into the passive instrument input. Which helps but I would rather run passive, just a smoother sound IMHO.

So I figure my options are the following:
1. Take back the V4B and get the CL. (I really don't want to spend the extra money have the large weight increase.)
2. Always use FOH support.
3. Come up with a method to use my Mesa D800 class D head to power one cab and V4B to power the other.

With this last method, what is the best way to wire it? Should I come out of the slave out or preamp out on the V4B? Then do I go into the instrument in or aux in on back of the D800?

IMHO, the choice of cabs is very important.
With a 810 one gets more volume than with a 112 cab, for instance.
Using FOH, when necessary, is always a smart thing to do too.
(combining the V4B with D800 can be done, but affects the tone/sound. This wouldn't be my choice)

So, depending on your needs for loud, I would:
- use FOH whenever I can;
- get a big cab, like an 810, 610 or two 115 cabs, or whatever your fancy.
- or a second cab of the one you already have (the V4B can handle 2, 4 and 8 ohm loads)
