2013 Ampeg V-4B 100W Reissue Pt2

If that's the case, you could go to an old school non-master V4B with no problem.
That's the really interesting thing with these ampeg amps to me. I've owned a fair share of Mesa amps in my time and have always needed to plug into the -15db input or use the pad to cut down the gain with my Spector basses.
Well with my v4bh, I always run into the regular input and never have any farting or clipping sounds at all, even with the gain set relatively high. On the mesa amps, I would always get a nasty farty tone unless I ran the gain at around 9:00.
My '75 SVT doesn't have a pre gain only master, and no active input, but again, my Spector just sounds killer through it. I'm not really sure what it is but these ampeg heads are perfect for what I need, I really can't wait to try one of these new v4bs.
I've really always ran my V4BH like an old SVT and using gain to control the master. It starts breaking up nicely right around noon and sounds huge with a pre pedal in front.

Very different eq styles and gain structures between the mesa and ampegs, could contribute to the difference you hear.
Purchased a gently used SVT to mix and match with the V4...now I really went off the deep end...

For me, the "secret" to this amp is diming the master. It sounds much better to my ears this way. With the gain around 1/3, it's thick, loud, clear, and awesome.
All I can say is this is one LOUD 100 watt amp with the best tone I've ever gotten. It has inspired me to practice much more.
Ok gang, I had to do it. Just got the 212AV! I've been using a different 212 cab and loved it so I decided to pull the trigger on the AV cab.
I had forgotten just how simple and versatile that EQ is. Swapped from the P with flats to the Sadowsky and it didn't sound too good - a simple tweak of the mids with the switch at 3K and the smile was back on my face. Just got a new Jaco artist fretless in from the States and it sings sweetly with the V4B set flat, plenty of mwah and a real nice growl (after a few post flight adjustments on the bass).
Cool bass...wish I could play fretless better. Too much to think about on a gig for me, though
Used to dig that 3k setting back in the day (early 80's). Added a little extra bite to the treble response. Made it sound kind of prog when I used a pick. Don't use it nowadays, though...I tend to stick to 800 and dial down the treble a tad, although now that I have a pickup that's not annoyingly bright in my Precision, I've been adding back a little more at the amp. And if I need to go full prog (believe it or not, I need it now and again), I just hit the ultra-hi switch.
The ultra high does not do much with the Bergantino NV115, Jimmy - it has a 6" mid driver but no tweeter as such so the effect is very, very subtle. I really dig the V4B with the NV115 way more than I did with the Fender 100T, it really is a magic combo if you are into an old school sound but with better definition.
However..... truth be told I am seriously considering getting a couple of AV112s or AV210s just because it would be a visual match. Silly reason I know but since getting the V4B I have come to appreciate its understated looks. Plus the convenience of a lighter cab for smaller gigs with the option of taking one or two. I can get the AV210 on a special deal at the moment but while I appreciate the advantages of vertical stacking I just can't come to grips with the idea of stacking two cabs on top of the amp, it just looks, well.....
(I am trying to be tactful here, Jimmy). So it looks like a couple of 112s might be on my horizon, I suppose.

Thought about that myself, but then I pick up those 210av's and they only weigh 25 lbs each, and I think, "Eh, that looks pretty good with the head on bottom."
Thanx Tim1..... All I need is GAS for a 100w tube amp. I've always wanted a V4B and I'm running outta reasons not to get one. Grŕrr!!
