2013 Ampeg V-4B 100W Reissue Pt2

I called Ampeg today. The price for an OEM 212AV replacement speaker is about $150.00 plus shipping. Pretty pricey.

If I needed a replacement, I would rather opt for a similar Eminence that is made in the USA - much less money and a longer
warranty (used to be 7 years - but I have not checked in a while).

Today I also installed my spare piece of "Heritage" style grill cloth on the 212AV. Here it is with it's new mates: a Heritage SVT810E, an Ampeg B115E, and a Heritage SVT410HLF.

That's a possibility. The units came from 2 differents store though. I could check if the SN# are close, but I was seriously wondering if I should drop the whole project and ask for my $ back.

I did try my upright (with an Upton Rev Solo pickup) with the V-4B + SVT112AV and it sounded AWESOME! That amp really has a nice tone, that's for sure.

If I end up keeping it, I'll definitely modify the XLR out circuit to have it pre master volume. I have the scematics, I think it can be done pretty easily.

I agree on that.

This amp I have now is their demo. I'll have it until I receive the brand new one they ordered for me, but since it's the second unit I have that is noisy, I think I'll just drop the project. I'm afraid to receive a brand new (3rd) unit that is noisy as well... I don't know, maybe I'm just asking too much here....

Nah, don't do that ;) The V4B is really a solid well-built head. I once dropped mine from 3 ft onto a garage floor and all that happened to it is one pre tube broke and the tolex got torn a little. This is a flukey situation that I've not seen before. Contact Ampeg...they'll get you sorted.

I would call customer service at Loud, ask to speak to Hodgy. Explain that you've had two units that were noisy. Send him the sound file.

You've asked people here if this is normal, now ask Loud if they think this is normal for this amp. See what they can do. They might flag your unit and get to the bottom of the problem.

Yes - I like it too. It probably won't hold up great over time though, as the material is not as strong as the metallic silver blue stuff. Also, one of my dogs likes to lay against the cabs - this is causing dust stains at the bottoms. I was able to vacuum most of it out and now I usually leave a guitar stand or something in the way to keep him from snuggling with my Heritage grilled amps.

It is exactly like the cloth that were on some amps in the 60's. You're right, not as tough as their other cloths but maybe it's sonically more transparent.

If you had a doggy bed in the studio, perhaps they would curl up in that.

The adjoining room is equipped with a couple dog beds. Usually the door is open. I move one bed into the studio when that is not good enough - they actually like to hear me play guitar:)

That's expected, they want to be with you. Especially if you have any snacks. You'd think that with such sensitive hearing, they wouldn't want to be so close to the cab. My dog used to love watching certain shows on the TV.

I have two. The older guy (in the photo) is hard of hearing now. The young guy (the amp snuggler) will always be laying against my stool when I am playing classical guitar - but when I plug in the Telecaster and put it on the bridge pickup, he will get right up and leave the room.
