Does anyone know where the rumour about SED halting receiving tube production got started? The first place that I heard it mentioned was at MEF, where an American expat named Stan who's moved to Russia commented about it because he allegedly got privileged news from a local source.

In these internet days, all it takes is one guy to start a rumor and then it spreads like wildfire. I'm wondering if there's any truth to this, or if Stan just started an internet rumour to help improve SED's tube sales, thereby convincing people to pay more for SED tubes than the equivalent JJ tubes out of fear that they would no longer be available.

I'm wondering if it's nothing more than a clever channel-stuffing trick. One of the American distributors for SED says that the rumors aren't true, that the only tube they've halted production on is the KT88, presumably because it costs too much to make that envelope shape.

I'm wondering if everyone's being taken for a ride. Where did you first hear the rumor?

Here. And The Tube Store, from which this quote came:

"We’re fairly certain production of the SED Winged “C” tubes has come to an end. We have purchased as much stock as available from them that was not factory seconds. We were offered factory seconds at a lower cost however we declined. We do know these factory seconds have entered the marketplace.

"Stock is limited and our price has been raised to reflect the higher purchase cost of this final product. SED Winged "C" tubes should now be considered NOS (New Old Stock)."

Could be worse. There could be no tubes at all.

Don't have a whole lot of love for JJ 6L6's either, though. Had some crap out after 3 months, had some be microphonic out of the box. However, I used a set of Sovtek 6L6's for 7 years + whatever the guy who sold it to me used it for, plus the guy who sold it to him. So I don't think the situation could be called "dire" yet.

In the notes on the order page just note you need a matched quad and they will take care of it. Don't wait too long though, winged "C"s are disappearing from reports.

that's a Real pity. their 6L6, when it first came out, was the best sounding new 6L i'd ever heard, and they only one that came close to a nos GE. i popped a pair in my super reverb while on the road (replacing a pair of JJ's) and my jaw hit the floor. incredible tubes! those things really had the classic bf fender tone nailed. JJ's have their own thing going on tonally, and while i like them fine (i don't like their 6V6's though) i prefer the winged C tone by far. acch...
