A bit OT - but I highly recommend the ESPN 30 for 30 telling the story of Russian hockey and the events that led up to the US having a chance to beat them in the 1980 Olympics - there was footage from some of the Canada v Russia series in there as well. Very well done. I didn't realize that the Russian coach made two really poor decisions in the game of the Grady Little or Pete Carroll type level of blunder.

I really enjoy those 30 for 30 docs and will look forward to seeing that one. Think my fave so far was the rise and fall of Jimmy The Greek.

The B's dominated in shots, chances, time of possession, but could only put 1 past Eddie Lack who stole the game for the Canucks who only put two past a pretty sharp Rask but that was enough. There are no good losses, but this was not a bad one - just the way the puck bounces sometimes.

Rask has just had a newly discovered wasp named after him - "The Boston Globe's Carolyn Y. Johnson (h/t [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) reports that Robert S. Copeland, an entomologist in Nairobi, Kenya, with New England roots, is using Rask's namesake to label a wasp recently discovered in the nation's Teita Hills. Copeland has christened the species Thaumatodryinus tuukkaraski, writing in a to-be-published paper that the name is an ode to the Bruins goalie."

Flames lost an entertaining one against the Rangers last night 1-0. Good night for Ramo. I spotted Hiller giving teammates dirty looks for being in front of him when a couple got past him when they lost to Anaheim the other night. I saw a goal go in off of Giordano, but he's in there trying to move guys out and he's played well this year - not to mention he's the captain. Not good for a team that seems to have pretty good chemistry forming up. I don't know whether that had anything to do with Ramo's start last night or not, but it was good to see him make the start and have a good one regardless of why he was started. I'm sure he'll be in tonight against the Devils after the way he played. 0-1 on a tough 7 game road trip at a time when all wins are critical especially as bunched as the Western is now for the last 2 positions in the Pacific division standings and the wild card spots.

Yes, stats and analytics were part of the reason Carlyle got fired in T.O. Even thought they were winning most games, and had the highest scoring offence in the league as of Dec.30, the stats guys said it was not sustainable. Out goes Carlyle, and according to the advanced stats, Leafs are in much better shape now. Way fewer shots against and shots aginst attempted, possesion time is up. And the only thing the Leafs have a chance at winning this way is Connor McDavid. Go figure.....

Thanks for posting, I bought Bill James' Abstracts in the mid-80's and that article reminded me of James in that the guy loved his sport and watched a lot of it and that he could write about statistical analysis in a way that a reasonably intelligent person could understand and enjoy. It took a little time for baseball to embrace the approach, but it is pretty mainstream now. Hockey will follow a similar path, maybe a bit quicker given how useful this type of analysis has proven to be in baseball. If you think that hockey is a hidebound traditional sport, soccer is twice as bad. Although my guess is that most major European club teams use the soccer analytics, they probably keep it on the down low so as not to offend their fans.
