2014-2015 NHL Regular Season Thread

I was really impressed from what I've seen of the Islanders the 2 times they've beaten Calgary this year. Such an improved team from what they've been in the past! Made the most of their early round choices the last few years. They could figure heavily in the playoffs this year from what I saw last night.

Then they lay a dud last night at home against the worst team in the metro.

You're right about them making the most of some of their picks. Garth Snow also made a couple nice playoff experienced pickups last October (Johnny Boychuck, Nick Leddy).
That, the up-tempo attacking style they play, a nice youth/young veteran blend, and I agree, they could go far in the playoffs.

But...if they don't stay out of the box and/or get their PK straightened out, they can get bounced early.
That loss against the 'canes last night is the type of game you have to win going down the stretch in a tight division.

I've been an Islanders fan for a very long and rough time.
This is the best I've felt about them since....around 1993. o_O

They showed the banners of retirees Nystrom, Potvin, Bossy, Smith and Trottier a few times during that game. Brought back memories (bad) of that great dynasty. We had John Tonelli for a while from that memorable team who played with the same grit and tenacity for us before moving on to the Kings - he missed our '89 cup win by one year. Too bad the Isles are leaving after this season with the history they have on L.I.

It is too bad. I don't live in NY anymore, so it doesn't affect me directly, but I wish they could have found a way to build a new arena on L.I.
They tried. Ownership proposed two major stadium projects including shopping centers, office complexes, athletic facilities, hotels, research center, restaurants, minor league baseball stadium....etc,etc...

All got buried in stupid political red tape, got drawn out, hacked up, re-drawn, stalled out, and eventually came to nothing.

Winning a couple playoff rounds (or more), would be a great way to send that old barn into retirement.

AAAHH......bringing up some of the role players from that Dynasty...I'm ashamed I almost missed this.
Tonelli put up some pretty good goal numbers himself, but jeez...he was always the guy who was battling against the boards with someone..grinding..shoving, hitting, pushing, scratching, clawing for the puck....the tough dirty work..... and would somehow come up with the puck and feed it in front or to the point to let Bossy or Trottier pass or slam it towards the goal...

IMO, he had as much to do with those 4 straight cups as the Bossy's, Potvin's, and Trottier's did.

Happy to see you honor him as he deserves.

Wow...watching the Preds last night I kept saying - wow, they are a good all around team. Goalie was really solid. Big players who hit. Lots of speed. Most of all, it looked like they play a great system that's suited for their players.


That said, RANGERS win!!!
Very entertaining game. Speed, hits, saves, terrific passing. Great game.

And Yandle is a great passer. As much as we were looking forward to seeing Duclair blossom, it was probably a smart move for both teams.

Rangers really have three very solid defensive pairings now with sufficient offensive punch.

Great speed and skill on the top three lines, with a gritty fourth line.

I would have tried to move Glass though. Don't know what was out there. He's too small to be an "enforcer" and not bothersome enough to be a "pest".

Man, we've had three rough nights in a row. first time all year that we've lost back to back in regulation, and it's three in a row. I'm sure we'll rebound. I'm hoping Lavi plays with the lines and finds a way to get Stalberg back in the line-up. he's beating all of the fourth line in advanced statistics and is riding the pine or playing in the AHL. Seems like a waste of 4 million a year to me.

He doesn't have mine. We've played the AVs several times since he was hired, and he seems like a goon. Arguing after his players board opposing teams, arguing goalie interferance calls against his team, etc. He played, he should know what the rules are.

Looks like Roy was a sponge (and then some) for Bob Hartley's style. No respect from here either.


Zulu....I would have quoted you, but as an arch-rival, I might have spewed all over my new-ish keyboard if I had to read that again. (no offense meant, really). ;)

Now, that being said......
I admit I am more than a little concerned about your boys going forward.
The fact that they haven't missed a beat since hank has been hurt bothers me....alot.

And going back just a little...Vigneault was the last guy I wanted your guys to hire as a coach.

Looks like there is a good chance we might have the Battle for NY all over again.

Dubnyk had a good year a few years ago, despite playing behind a very bad Edmonton team. Last year was a disaster, but it's hard to blame him. The Oilers were pretty much the worst team in the league defensively. If he got to play regularly behind a good team, he would put up much better numbers and could be a starter - and I think at minimum, he is a very capable backup.
