Not sure if they had 22 on early reissues.
(Once again) my memory seems to have failed me.
I've never owned a Hofner Shorty and don't have one in hand. I have played one. Which takes me back to the OP's question-- Regardless of the # of frets - and not trying to pick a fight here - but if I were looking for a good, reasonably priced short scale bass to gig with, it sure wouldn't be the Hofner Shorty. YMMV.

OH man, as an owner of a Birdsong with another one on the way, I can only say that they are the ONLY basses I will be playing from now on, and the Shortbass is a *killer* format. My Birdsong is essentially the prototype shortbass (with some Corto DNA) so I can vouch for the format of the Shortbass.
That said, I have a 32" Robin bass that I love that I have to sell (I promised my wife I'd get rid of my other basses when I ordered my 2nd birdsong!) that is totally bad ass Feel free to PM me. It served me well before I switched to birdsong, and I'd be happy to try to make it work within your price range even though it's a more high end instrument!
