I think you could get most of the parts needed on ebay and other web sites … Perhaps an unrouted p-bass body and make your own custom pickguard .
there are no rules here and there are many ways to do this … I will make mine 5 string and maybe 34" or 32" scale

YES! … 8 poles cover 5 string quite nicely … The Rickenbacker toaster is a 6 pole pickup, and it works on 4, 5, 6, 8, and 12 stringed instruments equally well.

I recently made a 3 pickup bass. I found a MIM Fender Jazz body that had a new P neck on it for a reasonable price online. With my Dremel I "routed" bigger holes for a pair of G&L MFD single coils, kind of like in the first generation SB-2 or Lynx. These are both obviously meant to be bridge pickups, as they're the current G&L offering for the SB-2 and they don't offer the original SB2 neck pu, which I believe is slightly less hot. At any rate, that's the combo I was going after, because that's the set in Kevin Rutmanis' (Melvins, Cows, Tomahawk, etc) basses and his tone is my favorite. While I was at it, I figured I'd also add a Lollar Thunderbird pickup at the neck. I have a pair in a Bilt Corvaire bass and they sound incredible. The three are hooked up to a six way switch, 3 volumes and 1 tone control. The G&L and Lollar pickups are very different, that 's for sure, but that was another reason I went with this combo, I wanted to be able to play some gnarly Melvins/Cows sounding stuff, then switch it over to the boom of the Thunderbird. The two do play ok together but honestly, the tbird by itself or the G&Ls by themselves or together sound best. Maybe if I had a reverse wound Tbird, they'd play nicer together, I don't know, but how it is now is pretty much what I was hoping for. I added a Hipshot KickAss bridge and bass Xtender, cut a pick guard and control plate out of a blank, and here it is.

How about swapping out the pickups for SD's, and the neck for a '60 Jazz reissue? (oh and it's for sale, PM me)
Here's where it ended up.
One I put together myself. The body is Walnut, some custom shop on west coast I can never remember the name of the neck is I think, a MIJ it had no positive ID but is very good quality. Schaller roller bridge, Fender tuners, 2 Fender, 1 Classic vibe pickups, VVVT passive controls. All combinations very useful and versatile tones.
Closest I'll come to a signature bass.
fwiw ever since I got a Lakland 55-02 I think of my Basses with coil-splittable humbuckers as “N+1” pickup Basses. So my 55-02 feels like a 3-pickup bass, and my Warmoth with the single Bart quad-coil pickup wired to 2 separate volume controls feels like a 2-pickup bass.
