30 years from now, boutique or cheesy?

The 80s was only cheesy in the 1990s and 2000s. The 80s is cool again in the 2010s. Just the same way that the 60s was cool in the 90s.

It is a single generational cycle. When kids are born never knowing what the 80s look like, will think the 80s are cool.

I strongly disagree. That kind of crap shouldn't come from guitards, let alone other bassists. I may not agree with what you or other people use, but I defend your right to the hilt to use it.

On topic, a quality bass is a quality bass. Yeah, some of the more 'out there' shapes may be out of favor, but the Sadowskys, Zons, Foderas, etc. will retain value. Even more so with the Sadowsky-esque high end Fender 'copies.'

It seems that you all didn't get the memo. Anything that is not made by Fender or Musicman is useless crap and shouldn't be played. Anything over 4 strings is a total waste and anything over 6 strings means you are compensating for your little (insert proper offensive word here). Oh and there is absolutely no market for anything over 30 years old, Because its old man! I bet in 30 years somebody will try to appraise their grandpas $5000.00 MTD on a show like the antique road show, and the guy will tell them it's just pretty wood and strings and will only fetch about $15.00 on the open market. See here? it says hand crafted by M. Tobias. He clearly was not a reputable builder of Fender instruments during that time. And every collector knows that the best basses from that era were mass produced in large factory's. And the guy will go, Really? I had no idea it was worth that much. I was about to use for fire wood. I'm glad I didn't
All kidding aside, Anything that's unique and well made will be worth a good price on the collectors market 30 or 40 years from now.

How do you think it's gonna be in 2040?

It will all depend on what coffee tables look like then.

There's a key difference here... that bass was an utter piece of **** to play... horrible pickups, lousy tracking, nasty sounding synth... People used to have to play BEHIND the beat to make it track ON the beat...

I didn't want to think it at first, I wanted to have a little faith in my TB brethren but this is looking more and more like a veiled attempt to troll on boutique basses. If you don't like them, say so and move on with life.

The world, music, and instruments as we now them will not exist. Most will be worthless. Really. Think technology. And I think boutique will fare worse. Not that that makes me happy.

I don't think boutique basses will be considered tacky. They have been around for over 40 years already. However, many of the finishes that are tacky today will always be tacky.

You may have a point or two. Then again, we may be wrong and we are everything "wrong" with boutique players.

I'm in the "It Looks Cheesy Now" camp.

Same here to a degree. Some boutique basses look nice but others are just too overdone for my taste. I prefer the classic look of a Precision, Jazz or Stingray. However, I bet there were people who thought those basses were cheesy looking when they came out.
