$33,600... for a bass...

Nick Gann said:
I got the price from Conklins site. That bass is one of the "Cherished Customs" at [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Each instrument has a "story" behind it, which includes its value. It has three instruments on there for every month. Look at January's, one of JT's basses is on there

So, no I didn't pull the number outta my butt, nor did I just "hear" that the price was that. It is written on the Conklin site.

Didn't think you did, Nick. Outta your butt prices are usually numbers like $33,000 or $33,500. The $600 takes it out of the normal butt range;)

Your "price bias" comment I can agree with though, since I've gotten the impression that Conklins (all ranges) are actually fairly priced for what you get in form and function, whereas I don't at all have that impression of Alembic or many/most other fancy brands.

exactly. what we as players and fairly knowledgable individuals consider "fair" the less astute amongst the instrument buying public, with more money than sense, considers somehow "cheap" and by default then not worth it. it's weird, and lame, but it's the way it is, according to bill, and other builders that i've talked to as well.

you could always get a 6 string conklin custom - shoot, i have a picture of a carved cross 6 bill made in the late 80s for a player in a religious band.

That's an idea! Bet Bill could knock off a sweet one. Man, I really don't need that kind of encouragement, however, JT. I'm up to my eyeballs in high-end sixers as it is! :p

yeah, i bet. :) what's the current boogie-stable lineup these days?

I need to work up a new family pic. Soon! The short list, not counting vintage stuff is:

5
--

MTD 535
MTD 535 fretless

6
--

Ken Smith BSR6 GN
MTD 635
Modulus Quantum 6
Zon Legacy Standard 6
Zon Legacy Elite 6
Hanewinckel Draken Pro 6
Hanewinckel Nimbus Pro 6 fretless

7
--

Hanewinckel Artist Fusion 7
Hanewinckel Artist Solaris 7
Hanewinckel Signature Solaris 7 w/piezo, semi-hollow 7 (being built, due in a month or so)

I recently sold the Elrick 7 and the Fodera 6 fretless. I also have Pete H. making me a cool 4 string to cover retro, pickup gigs that I get periodically. Yeah, I know it's nuts to play 4, 5, 6 and 7 strings all at the same time! What can I say? :p

I had a very wealthy girlfriend and we went to a very fancy restaurant. Only 22, I wasn't too refined in the palate [sic]. I perused the drinks menu and was astonished to see a $12 shot of Bourbon. I commented negatively on this and she said "Well why don't you try it? What if it's worth it?".

Fair enough, so I did. Utterly blew my mind. It was easily worth double. So is a great $50 shirt. Maybe also an "expensive" bass?
Sure, but the law of diminishing returns will generally apply to all these examples. I generally try to drink scotch that is around the $80-100Aus a bottle - but I could never justify a shot of 50yo Glenfiddich which, in the only place I have seen it, is $350Aus a shot (30ml's).

Likewise with business shirts / ties / suits etc.

I guess its all relative based on what you are prepared to spend and what you expect to get out of it. Im still not sure, based on the pictures i've seen of that bass how it could have a commission price of $33k - Even assuming the materials cost more that is still like 10 times the price of a "standard" Conklin Custom - is the assumption therefore that it took 10 times longer to make?
