It's hard to tell with the OC2/Doom stacked into it, but...

It looks like you may have the filter set close to that threshold of triggering/not triggering (obviously this depends on how hot your bass signal is and how much volume cut or increase you're dialing in on the doom/OC2 before they hit the WL). It could be the feedback from the Doom's fuzzy distortion and/or the OC-2 jumping around trying to track, which is causing the filter to repeatedly trigger on some notes.

Can you get the filter to do that without both of those effects on before it? I would try dry-base into the WL, and then isolate each of the octave and fuzz into the filter in order to see if that's what is going on...

Seems like I might as well post about this here instead of starting a thread. I tested out a few 3Leafs back when I was originally looking for an envelope filter, and while they were solid, I ended up with an IE XD instead for the more radical shaping. That's been awesome, but I realized that now I've got the need of both ridiculous gnarly envelope soup (the XD) on a few songs I also need a nice classic clean envelope so I don't have to reset and tweak one of the tweakiest filters out there.

Stopped in at a local indie at lunch and ended up seeing this in the case.

...and 100$ later, I've got a decent clean envelope to work with. Would have preferred a v2 or v3, but I'll also be grabbing a JoshWah to compare and at that price...hard to say no.


...now for my question.

Is there any benefit to running this at 18v over 9v or even something in the middle at 12v? I have an open 18v on my CS12...

Bill,

I have a V3, and haven't experimented with anything other than 9v - I'm not even sure the thing will handle 12 or 18v (I don't recall anything about this in the documentation). But, I haven't felt like I'm giving anything up either - it seems fully dynamically responsive at 9v through my rig which is closely matched to your own.

I will say that I like the Proton FAR more than my old MXR M82. I felt like I twiddled knobs on the MXR for five years to try and get a pleasant sound out of the thing, but my Fearfuls faithfully reproduced a very harsh midrange spike in the sweep of the filter (you can even hear it on the M82 youtube demos).

The Proton is much more useable and easier to blend, and the up/down feature is a huge add.

I'm happy to run it at 9v, I do see that the case itself says 9-18v, so I figured I'd see if anyone had any thoughts on it. I run my Cali76cb at 18v as the Origin people suggest it.

It's funny I really took a long time to a handle on a good clean traditional sound out of the XD but once I did I can get a REALLY good one. The Proton seems much easier to get a competent sound right out of the gate. I just don't want to take the time on stage tweaking controls...so a good clean envelope on board is the answer.

Agree with this. The M82 was a rather harsh filter. I got closer with the Mr. Black Fwonkbeta, which is sweet, but the up and down sweep of the Proton is what does it for me. I much prefer the sound of a filter sweeping down, especially for synth parts.

All the versions according to spencer are good and very close in sound. So having v1 isn't bad at all and at 100 dollars its a good deal. If you put 18v on it, it may give you more headroom but it won't be night and day. I bought a Godlyke cable from my voodoo labs power to the Proton v2 which the cable can take 9v to 12, 18 or 24 volts . I didn't hear a drastic difference and live you may not at all. I am currently using just 9v.

Yeah, I've done a bit of digging. A few people have said they've noticed a difference but the official word is that if there is, it's minor. I'll probably start out with 18v mainly because I have an unused 18v iso...and most of my others are now full or daisy chained. It seems like the design isn't all that different from the versions, just that rather than have toggles for a few of the features which gives a couple baked in settings, you have pots for variable settings. I wasn't expecting to grab this, so it's sort of a bonus...and it won't stop me from grabbing a JoshWah when they become available at the end of the week. Nice to have options and this one seems pretty plug and play.

The down sweep seems more useable than my newest generation Xerograph Deluxe. If you go into downward sweep 4-pole and hit hard you'd better watch out for your speakers. Serious sub content.

My next move is to decide if I'm going to put this in the HP loop of my Divaricator (where the XD lives along with the distortion, delay, chorus) or if I put it out front of the Divaricator. I'll have to remove a pedal, probably my weirdo Ibanez bi-mode chorus, it doesn't get used a lot but when it does it's fantastically wonky.

So I noticed that the 3leaf Facebook changed its profile picture and that none of the distributors have any wonderloves or purple protons only the white ones. I didn’t know if there was another shake up coming or if anyone had any info about this.

I'm curious about this myself. I'm excited to see what may come out! Maybe the long awaited phaser?
