So I just got my Proton in the mail and while I ordered the V4, I was sent a V3 instead. Is the V4 such a step up that I should deal with the hassle of returning the V3 and then waiting for a V4 to pop up since I am sure they wont have any in stock?

There is a switch on the v4 to extend the range whose essential function I think I read was somehow worked into one of the knobs on the v3, but I'm not 100% sure. The circuit was said to have been "redesigned" but I've played my friend's v3 and they're not a million miles from each other tone wise. He prefers the tone of the v3 and I'm happy with my v4.

Yes. V4 is based on the chromatron circuit. V3 is not.
Nope. keep it and resell it when there’s a V4 that comes up. Or sell the V4, whichever you prefer.
I have the V4 Proton which I use for my guitar rig (Guitar?! what heresy is this!), and I have a chromatron on my bass board. I really only use the down position on both of them, so to me the V4 is essential because I like the deeper setting on the filter sweep. Just my two cents.
On an unrelated note. I have an octabvre mini and I recently acquired an IE dubt in hopes it would take over for my analog octaver needs but it doesn't quite do it for me on that front. Does anyone have any opinions on the Vol +vol circuit of the octabvre mkiii vs the volume/mix of the mini/ mkii? Is it very close in tone? is one clearly "better" than the other?
I presume the tracking on the mkiii is pretty much comparable to the previous iterations?

I havent tried either yet, my mkiii is on the way, but usually I prefer a Vol/Vol interface to Vol/Mix for octavers.
I replaced my MKII with the MKIII without much gripe. My only issue with it was the realization that it's actually a little TOO compact-- on a tight board it can be hard to hit one switch instead of the other. I got used to it though, and the Vol/Vol setup is much better IMO.
MkIII is closer to the oc-2, mini/mkII has more mids. If you decide to dump the Dubt I’d be interested.

I kept the MK1. I haven't tried the MKII but I've had the MK1 for so long that i'm just so used to it. I also prefer the bigger enclosure for the spacing between the two switches. More space to do that ''rhythmic'' on/off Lefebvre trick!
Man, the Proton tracks soo well with flats and a P bass!
Thanks! Spencer's creations are something special for sure. Still learning how to get the most out of my Proton, so many cool tones I'm still learning about.
