If you don't use much/have little experience with filter pedals I would, in all sincerity, try something that won't cost you $400-700.
The chromatron is more versatile. The GR2 is great, and very derivative of the Love Tone Meatball. The Chromatron has a broader range of sounds, and it has some improved features…boost, external resonance control, expression pedal comparability with mode footswitch, and the external fx loop control.
Well... as I said, Im looking for a keeper, also, I want to buy stuff that keeps or go up on his resale value. A cheaper pedal like boss will depreciate and will take forever to sell at a reasonable price, but if Im lucky a boutique or vintage pedal might worth more on 5 or 10 years.
Who is to say if/when the bubble will burst? In 10 years pedals could be obsolete. I consider my vast CD library full of collectibles that aren't worth anything. You can get a keeper for $150 - $200 that will likely retain its value or go up...there's a way better chance that you'll buy a chromatron at $700 and never get that money back.
Agree completely. My recommendation is the Josh Wah. I’ve owned all iterations of the 3 Leaf Stuff and they all have their positives but right now the price is just silly.
I feel very lucky to own my Chromatron..... prices are currently crazy. That being said, if I had to pick ONE filter to be THE BEST.... I would pick the Chromatron. It's literally my favorite for bass or guitar.
Definitely my fav as well, I've always loved envelopes, and the GR2 was really nice, month's later a Chromatron fell in my lap from another user helping me out. I use every function I/O, every day. Love it, it's a genius pedal
A 3leaf pedal isn't going up in value from the current prices that most are asking. If value is main concern a $100 Boss dropping in value by $20 makes far more sense than paying hundreds for a 3leaf and the price dropping in half because Spencer starts making them again.
Yeah, I love 3leaf gear, but buying one now, is like buying a stock at it's all time high price, if you are going for an investment perspective.
It's probably not going to increase much in value as it's maxed out already. Plus Spencer will be releasing more sooner or later, which should also drive the Used Prices down with increased availability.

MKI or II? I don't think the III was out when that was recorded but I could be wrong.
I think your best bet would be to buy a 3Leaf Proton new or B-Stock directly from Spencer’s site the next time they’re available. He did mention the prices on his pedals would be going up but that is 100% a keeper filter pedal, more affordable than the other 3Leaf filters you mentioned, and easy to dial in but still really flexible.
I prefer the Proton to the Chromatron because it gives me what I need in an easier and smaller format. The Chromatron is objectively better, but I wouldn’t pay $500 for either of them.
The Reverb prices are insane. For $500 you could buy two super high end pedals new.

For a little more than $500, I got a Microtron IV and a Xerograph Deluxe. If those two don't cover my filter needs, it's hard to picture what would.

GR2 is within my budget but $500 still a little high
The GR2 is a great, fat sounding Meatball-esque filter. That said, it's absolutely not worth $500. I owned it twice, and sold it after dialing in some pretty damn good replicas of the fattest sounds with my C4. If you're going to drop a few hundo and insist on 3Leaf, the Wonderlove and Chromatron are more flexible as far as range of sounds goes. I'm a filter freak, and the GR2 is excellent at the more narrow scope of sounds it has on tap. The later big box filters from Spencer are definitely more refined, have more usable range, and have improvements in layout/features. Just my 2 cents...
