3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

Man you're so cool obviously not caring about a business scamming its customer base. Thanks for letting us all know!

You're playing it pretty fast and loose with the word "scamming" here. Is he stealing money and not delivering? Is he taking people's money and delivering a different product? You may not like his deal, but that doesn't make it a scam.

  • If you are Spencer you can choose any path forward, but it's guaranteed that someone will disagree with that path.

I used to be the co-director of a small company in the trading card industry. Our customers had high expectations as this service did not exist in Europe back in the days. Thus, we were exposed to a tons of criticism. Every single decision we took was subject to long debates.
While many of the points debated could indeed help the company improve itself, most of the debates failed to identify solutions nor even a common agreement among customers about what they wanted.

I was very proactive and tried to take our customers opinion as much as possible. I made a poll and asked our customers what they preferred between 2 choices. They voted, and we implemented their choice. Guess what ? Months later, and even after I left the company, I was still receiving complaints about the decision.
If you choose A, some people will complain you should have chosen B. If you choose B, the rest of the community will complain about not choosing A. Even if the decision was voted by the customers themselves !

Reading the numerous complains everyday was demotivating. You always feel like you're not doing a good job even though 99.9% of the tasks you do are hidden to the customers.

This experience taught me to think extensively before taking a decision. Everything must be very clear but short so that they are never left with questions or uncertainty. But once it is made public, I ll stick to it.
It is important to listen to the customers, especially if a mistake was made. But not every opinion must be taken into account. 99% of the time, the customer don't see things with the same eye.

Been out for a few weeks, heard there's some drama with 3leaf, anyone care to give me a synopses?

It appears he's actively trying to annoy & anger his customer base. I guess when so many people desperately want what you have to offer it affords you the liscense to act in such a way... forcing a bundled sale with a preamp is really lame considering the number of people that play passive basses which he's fully aware of.

I dont plan on ever buying another 3leaf pedal but the ongoing drama is a bit entertaining, sorry for the people caught up in it, I dont mean to be insensitive to yalls frustration.

Dude, it's a boutique effects pedal, not starving children. What's there to be sensitive or insensitive about? This is peak first world problems.
That is precisely what ground my gears. Much of my discontent remains internal self-loathing for wanting something and not being able to get it, like a kid throwing a tantrum. It exposes my soft underbelly.

Well, fair point, but I think people have legit reasons to be pissed off. Doing my best to be diplomatic.
I wholeheartedly disagree. There is zero reason to be pissed off. Plenty of reasons to ignore or divert, but anger and frustration? All the “scams”, “extortion”, and experiences of being ”wronged” are in the minds of the offended, disconnected from reality.

Lol I just know people are upset & didnt want to come across as an as$ho1e by finding it somewhat entertaining, does that make sense? I wasnt saying this is a tragic situation by any means, you're 100% right about it being peak first world problems.

Definitely not to the level where accusations of “scam” are warranted, but expectations were that this drop would be just like the previous 2. There was no indication of any change until just before the drop. People are allowed to be upset about that. I don’t think it’s anywhere serious enough to rage quit over, and personal insults are definitely way out of line.

Aiming to be diplomatic is good.

A very reasonable and measured way to look at this.

If nothing else, this 'situation' just illustrates that Spencer is great at making a specific line of effects pedals, while business communications are clearly not his strong suit. Good reminder of the range of skills necessary to run the whole show yourself and do it well...
