I see what you mean, but I see these as separate phenomena. The 3 Leaf filters are different pedals but the same effect. The Octabvre MKIII and Proton 4 are the same pedals with different aesthetics (the Doom 2, of course, did undergo a not insignificant revoicing). Ditto for the Iron Ether offerings. In the former case there is a real difference in tone, control options, etc. In the latter case the difference is one of fun colors and, at least with the 3 Leaf stuff, runs limited to 100 units.

I couldn't hear too much difference between the first D2, ghost finish and that blood red D2, some things relabeled but they did about the same thing. My one setting I use also resided in the same place too. Taylor's stuff only gets better the newer it is, refinement ect., going backwards for esthetic is beyond me - but it's the owners prerogative I suppose
That being said, I have some cool things for anyone that has a mk2 octabrve. MK3 finally lost its luster for me, maybe there's hope with the original, heck I'd even go for a MK1. Always on Tim mod would be fine by me.

Scott and Ian just posted this video. Whole video is great but skip to the octave shootout for now. Pleasant surprises in there and good advice at the end of the comparison.
I forgot how much I like the Octabvre's mid-forward tone in a band mix. Almost chewy. Those mids also translate well with other pedals downstream. The mk3 > WF125b > Proton v4 + FFXL (into the Helix for modulation) creates some aggressive synth-y sounds. The mk3 might be my favorite acquisition this year.
I have an octabvre mini and a mkIII and still prefer the mini. That review was funny.

Confirms my stance on not loving MKIII in the blind shootout. As many have said before, it's very mid focused. It's synthy, but lacks the fundamental low end that I want.
I really enjoyed the HX (classic, smooth), MXR (I liked better than the OC5 and 2 in this), OC3, and synthy character of the Octavider.
Part of what I love in the MKII is the 2 sides of the coin that both sound killer.
yep! Totally agree, Justin. I have every version and I probably use the V1 with the Tim mod the most.

Very good! It stood out as distinct and having least of what sounds good at hime but not in a mix (ultra lows).
I don’t want for new octaves after using MXR Bass Oxtave Deluxe the past many years, often with mid switch engaged, so makes no difference to me.

Having owned an MKIII I would agree with this assessment. It does sound very good in a mix. I use a Mini currently, which I'm told is permanently in Tim mode and thus has a ton of sub low end. I even run it with the tone knob zeroed out, so clearly I'm not looking for mid presence when I turn my octave pedal on, but I realize this would not work well in all, or even most scenarios.

If he had all the knobs in the center, the tone knob on the Octabvre MkIII is gonna sound not so bassy in the middle. The tone knob is meant to be more of a blend between OC-2 style all the way Left and Mutron (classic old style) style all the way Right. Definitely more bottom/ass if the tone knob is all the way left.
Agreed. The tone all the way left (that’s how I use it) and with the Tim switch on is a wonderfully balanced, full tone. OC2 in comparison sounds more hollow with touch more bass, but mk3 has more than enough bass there and sounds fantastic in the mix. I’ve played all of them live with loud rock bands and nothing touches my mk3 for fitting in the mix, especially with the sub soloed. Mk3 was the only one with enough gain and mids to actually work that way, and wonderfully so. Again, loud bands, so YMMV.
Being the MKIII is my first Octaver, I am both trying to find the settings that give me a subtle full round tone, and have realized a lot of that tone is learning to play my passive precision bass differently when using a octave effect. Any recommendations on settings For the MKIII? So far the tone knob all the way to the left and Tim switch up are definitely a preferred choice. Still trying to dial in the other knobs for a smooth subtle round tone using IEMs and could use some recommendations. Thanks all. I played along at home. I tried to put them in order, but it was hard to do with just those clips. So, I just picked ones that I would be happy with and ones that I wouldn't. The MXR, 3 Leaf, Pearl and Boss OC3 and OC5 were all good. The Stomp, Mutron and Berhinger weren't doing it for my style. I am a bit surprised that I kind of placed the OC2 off to the side. I couldn't decide on that one. I don't have 9 octave pedals at home. Just 4. I've done my own tests with my own gear and style. The 3 Leaf mini is what is on my board now. Who knows, that could change, but I'm happy with the sounds I getting...and it didn't cost me anywhere near $5k.
I had an OC2, got rid of it (didnt use it much but then missed it), then got a MKIII, and also put together a DIY OC-2 clone and I think these two octaves are enough octave for me. MKIII has more output, and most people wouldn't even know what it was or the difference between them when I turn them on. But I do, and I like the MKIII and how tweakable it is. OC2 clone turned out better than I thought it would. Maybe I should use them more...
Uh someone is getting his first 3Leaf pedal today. Merry Xmas to me indeed.
I always backed off the tone knob a bit, around 8:30-9 o'clock, tim switch up (I really don't know why that's not just fixed in the up position, my guess to justify the Lafebvre portion of the name), that's about where the MK2 maxes out on the tone blended left. Also, try splitting your signal with your ffxloop and run the SUB on, with a clean direct line parallel, to me that's the best MK3 sound. I wish the direct on the pedal didn't shut down with the SUB on.
