Happily trending in my own peculiar direction.
Is there any precedent for "???" meaning a new pedal? Or does it just mean it's undecided which pedal will be available that month? Previously that was indicated as "TBD", but could have the same meaning.
I don’t recall use of “???” previously.
Certainly “???” is more exciting and promotable than “TBD”.
So got the Doom 2 a few days later than expected, but I got to play it for a while today nonetheless. The one I got is one of the 1/100 "Blood Red" drops from the middle of last year (weird). Anyway, in regards to comparing it to the Subspace, there are certainly a few similarities that I like.
For one both pedals allow the ability to blend your clean signal, and even boost it, over the effected sound. I find this to be really cool and useful. With guitar I especially found this helpful (with the Subspace) when you wanted to have a filthy distorted tone, but also keep the notes intact, obviously as you could imagine that is helpful for bass. You also had eq options with the Subspace that again draws similarities. While similar, the Subspace wins in versatility as you could apply the EQ to run either pre/post drive or just standalone function with this pedal; whereas this is fixed on the Doom to only effect the distorted signal, and the bass knob is in fact a clean blend that allows you to add your clean signal or much like the Damnation MBD2 a low passed clean signal back to your sound.
The Subspace had a crazy amount of clipping options (three voices) and ways to pad or crank the input; and when I say crank I mean drive the input up to 5x that of your instrument signal, which really really works well. The pedal also comes with a pad switch for those running active instruments or if you simply want to attenuate your signal and the drive tones. With the Doom you have what you have in the fuzz sounds provided (2;one full range and one with octave up) although if you're going for the Doom 2 I'm sure that's what you're looking for. While the Subspace can get super fuzzed out and crazy I don't know if it ever gets to the sound that the Doom 2 does. The octave up and sort of gated/envelope filtery nature of the fuzz is one that I've never really experienced, unless I was using an old octave fuzz with the volume rolled back, and from there your playing dynamics really dictate how the fuzz sounds. That's kind of what the Doom 2 reminds me of, however; with those old octavia fuzzes you never had the option to effortless bring back the clear low end from your instrument, or blend parallel your clean signal entirely.
Because of the touch sensitive nature of the Doom, I found running pedals into it made it that much more fun; got to try it with a Walrus 385 and a vintage Boss OC-2. These both really altered how the Doom sounded and reacted; it was a fun experience. The Subspace also is very reactive based on what you put into it; being that the nature of the drive is built around how hard you drive the input and seeing as it has the clean blend options, the pedal really reacts and retains what you want, and can be and incredibly flexible tool for bassists.
All in all I don't think you can go wrong with either pedal if you're looking to expand your tonal pallet. If you're looking for a drive that can do it all; and retain the tones you already like the Subspace is a no brainer. There kind of isn't a sound that you can't create with that pedal except for maybe what the Doom 2 offers imo. Get one of both is the moral to this story and you'll be happy you did! Cheers
I got my pedals today! As an international customer I was able to preorder all three together.
The PROTON I managed to get, the OCTABVRE is from the 50 spared in August, the DOOM is from last release. I liked the Royal PROTON better, maybe someone in Europe wants to trade?
I also contacted Spencer and he confirmed the surprise to be that there's no release this month. The ??? just means the schedule is undecided and the last batch of 100 PROTON will happen sometime in the future.

That is a very good looking set! Congratulations. I really like that Proton colour, especially next to the Doom 2.

Dang, you got your Doom 2 already? I snatched one from that drop and it still hasn’t shipped yet. The last pedal I got in a drop didn’t ship for 2 or 3 weeks, so I’m not sweating it.. but sheesh, how does one make it to Europe before one makes it over to little old Wisconsin? Congrats on the beautiful board!
Shipping is more expensive to Europe, but it also includes faster air shipping. That combined with that pedal already being spoken for so it was probably packed up before the sale even happened.
It depends how orders are sorted.
Considering he has purchased all 3 together last summer, the order has been pending for the past 4 months while yours has just been placed.
I already had to take similar decisions in a previous job and I would have shipped the older order first, just to get rid of it.

Not a huge fan of this color but if it sounds good I don’t care too much.
I've owned both earlier versions, being the original Doom and Doom2 - pre Ghost finish. While I don't own them any more to do a side by side comparison, off memory the newest Doom2 "feels" the same as my old one. It's been a while, but the Mid control feels a bit more focused and more pronounced when dialing it in more. But that could all be complete misremembering on my end. My amp setup has also changed a couple times over since then so I'm probably not the best to quote on those kind of subtle differences

I, like you, had an older D2. I remember likening the bass and treble controls alot, but feeling less so with the voicing of the mid control. Overall, though I really missed that pedal, so I’m really looking forward to this one, and curious about whether I’ll hear any difference with the bass freq shift.

Quality enclosures, but be careful if you’re routing cables in a tight spot…those edges are sharp!

In other news…I love the Doom 2. There’s definitely some magic in there. Lives up to (most of) the hype. Looks like this one’s a keeper.
