Thanks so much, truly appreciate that. It sounds like there is some overlap, but I will still be curious to try an Octabvre at some point. Clearly they are both top-notch pedals. Vs the Cog, the Subsonic seems to have more of that “hollow,” bass clarinet quality I feel with the OC2, though it remains limited to this tone (which it does excellently).

Took a few years and quite a bit of stomping, but my mkIII is finally nekked as a jaybird. I kind of like it.

Anybody know how to tell if a MK 1 Octavbre has the Tim Tuning? And if not, is Spencer still modding them with it? And if so, how much might that cost? I just snagged a relatively cheap Mk 1 on Reverb. Doesn’t say if it’s got the tim tuning, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t. Guess I’ll find out when it gets here.

If it sounds extremely dubby and synthy and low-passed, then it has Tim tuning.

Small change to the board. I’m sure it was just me, but I had trouble dialing in sounds I could use in the music I’m playing with the MK 3.33. I threw a Boss OC-5 in its place last weekend and it killed. Dialed in the perfect sound almost as soon as I plugged it in. In the meantime I scored this MK I Octabvre on reverb for a reasonable price. I was really curious to try the “original” version vs the latest and greatest. Just slapped it on the board for a quick test and I’ve got to say, I like it a lot! Just like with the OC-5 I was dialing in musically useful tones right away. Not that I wasn’t finding cool sounds with the 3.33, I just wasn’t landing on sounds that were musically useful for me. I’ll say the mk 3.33 (and the OC-5) track a little better than the MK I, but I find the sub volume/sub switch more useful on the MK I. It just felt like I had a big volume drop on the MK 3.33 whenever I used the sub switch, no matter how I had the pedal set.

That’s interesting! And you adjusted the sub octave volume using the small trim pot (when soloing)?

I contacted the seller who told me that he sold the trio as a lot for $365 each.

@Jonathan49 I prefer the Mk3.33 for most things requiring a thick sub-octave, but MkIII sounds just as good for an aggressive tone through a drive pedal, e.g., tone full CW going into a Damnation Audio MBD. They're quite different from each other, in my opinion--the tone knob is blending two entirely different circuits in MkIII vs a low-mids control for the sub-octave voice in Mk3.33.

Hey! I've been able to mess with my Mk3.33 pretty thoroughly in live settings and by myself. The pedal is awesome, it does exactly what Spencer says it should do, but I've been having trouble dialing in a sound I like. I've used an OC2 and an MXR Vintage Bass Octave, which are both great, but I've been looking forward to having an octave with a sub toggle and a tone that pokes through a little more. With the overload switch on and tone dimed on the mk3.33, it reminds me of an octave with a low gain fuzz or drive in front of it, which is really cool, but I already have my doom2 for that. With the overload switch off, the sub is pretty dark. I guess the sound I'm looking for is that hollow, synthy tone I've heard on previous octabvres. The Mk3.33 is an absolute beast, but maybe a Mk3 or previous iterations are more suited for what I'm looking for?

It definitely sounds like MkIII is more of what you’re looking for tonally. Have you listened to @macieq’s video? A recording can only give you an estimate, so maybe someone here might swap their MKIII for yours, even if just temporarily.

That video is super helpful, thanks! Maybe trading for a Mk3 is the right idea. The "collector" in me wants to own both agh! Maybe I'll find a deal for a mk3 so I can compare both side by side.
