5 string basses. I was told they are pointless, also that Marcus Miller is c***?

Oh, since I've been playing for a short time I may not voice my opinion? There is a reason I pointed that fact out; to advertise the fact I'm inexperienced. You though, with your deep and broad bass experience, seems not to be smart enough to get that. Kudos to you Sir!

dang , i coulda bought an excellent 1 string for $700 ....

but seriously .... get what YOU like ..!!!

screw what anyone else thinks ...

and sometimes the size and comfort of what fits your hand might actually matter ..??!!

i've played 4,5,6, & 8 stringers in the last 35 years ... i've settled in on 5 ....

Hi Laura. I think you need to play whatever is comfortable for you , and not worry about what someone else thinks.

I have both a 4 string and a 5 string. The 4 sounds a little better, but the 5 is more comfortable to me, and it gives me more options on how I can play something. After a year of owning both, the 4 is for sale. :)

BTW, I think it's great you're learning to play.

I love my low B.

Thanks for supporting my daughter Bill ...Your reply makes up for all those that took no account of the fact that she is young, new to the bass and fairly new to posting on this forum. I'll leave it at that.

I hope you didn't take my reply as offensive.. I was simply saying that the "other person" was right when he said get what works, not what someone else is playing.. Just because so and so is playing X number of strings doesnt mean its better for her (or anyone else). I can see how when big names are playing certain brands and number of strings how it can become attractive, especially for newer players. But the number of strings and who plays what brands should not determine how useful it'll be to each person. Experience based on playing as many brands and as many configurations as possible should dictate what is needed.. Even a beginning player can tell the physical difference between 4 and 5 string necks and poorly and well setup basses by playing them side by side.

Just my $0.02

Mr. Missymoo, I think you should let your daughter know that the web can be a cold and lonely place sometimes, and one thing she may run into occasionally is people goofing on her over her posts. I know of no one who is exempt. I've been goofed on, everyone on here has been goofed on, and I'll bet even you have been goofed on. It's only the internet, who cares?

Missymoo (if I ever have a daughter at my advanced age, I'm naming her Missymoo), play what YOU want to play and have fun. It really doesn't matter. You'll find that a lot of musicians have brains inversely proportional to their egos, especially teenage boys. Don't worry about it...music is supposed to be fun, and if you have fun playing a 5, great. If you have fun playing a 4, great.

BTW, XtreO, after a year of playing, you're not entitled to an opinion about whether a type of bass is useless or not. You don't have enough experience to even formulate an opinion on stuff like that. The best thing for you to do at this stage of the game is listen to people with a lot more experience and try to learn from it. And that's coming from a guy who feels 5's are pretty much useless in the type of music I play. But they're not useless in the types of music OTHERS play.

You are entitled to your opinion. And maybe a 5 string is useless for you, perhaps now, and maybe even forever!

But to a lot of us, basses with more than 4 strings are NOT useless. I started on a four, 25+ years ago. Today, I still play my four bangers. But I play fives and sixes too. And I am hoping to get a seven string in the near future.

my 7's and 8's are very pointy! :) and someone please answer my earlier question - what is "the color shane"? the dude's name implies he's in a band and they're recording, i'd like to hear some of his opinions.

and missymoolaura, don't take any of this stuff personally - folks around here are used to other people coming in and being insulting toward their instrument, so that's what some of them assumed you were doing.
